Alex from John Paul College in Rotorua enjoys working in the community and learning about nutrition so the career of a community health worker is something she is particularly interested in checking out.
She joins Iwi Te Whau who explains the community health worker is the link between the community and the public health service. The role incorporates looking at ways to help reduce major health problems such as smoking, being overweight and the spread of diseases such as H1N1.
Education is another key part of the job and Alex and Iwi head off to a kohanga reo to teach the children a fun song while learning a good hand washing technique. It's not just young children Iwi works with and Alex joins him at a smoke free meeting where they are brainstorming ideas to get this important message across to young people.
Good nutrition is another area of advice and support a community health worker is involved with and Iwi explains educating people to make healthy choices and cook nutritional food is all part of supporting the community towards wellness.
For Alex, the insight into Iwi's role has been a great experience and she proved she has the enthusiasm and skills that could see her succeed as a community health worker in the future.
