Lilacs are amazing here in Mackinac county (MI) in June, as the day are warm and the nights are very cool as lakes Michigan and Huron are still cold. Lilac festival on the Island is always a delight. Thanks for the great program. Keep up the good work !!

I have both Bloomarang Lilacs and can't wait to get the third new one. I'm a big PW fanboy-like a kid in the candy store. A lot of the garden centers want me to try the non-branded ones, too, but nothing compares to PW plants. They always look healthy, and the colors are so strong that they make you think, are these even real plants. .

Hello! I love the show! Would you ever consider doing a segment or whole episode on how to overwinter shrubs and perennials in their nursery containers? (I’m zone 5b). Since Rick worked at a garden center, I thought he would have some tips for other individuals in the garden center workforce that hope to have a better survival rate this next spring!

As someone who's lived in the south pretty much their whole life...I had no idea lilacs and moms went together for so many people! Moms are tulips and roses for us -- or at least for me. It's always been lie-lack for us! Lai-lauk is so weird to me, lol. Speaking of...this year, I got my mom a rose from the local nursery. I learned she's been wanting to grow roses for years (hard when you have little kids!). Earlier this year we got a climbing hybrid tea rose for the balcony, but she's been so disappointed it hasn't bloomed yet. I asked her if she had another rose in mind, and she said yes, but it was a little expensive for her, so of course I offered to buy it for her. We met up at the nursery before my work one day, she pointed out the exact one she fell in love with (gorgeous pink/peach watercolor blooms with an absolutely heavenly fragrance), and I rolled it up to the counter, bought it, and handed her the receipt with a "Happy Early Mother's Day!" She cried and hugged me several times...made slogging through weeks of retail for the paycheck worth it!!!!! Love you, mom! Mom absolutely adores the rose and it's on the balcony now, happily producing a ton of flowers...it'll need to be put in the ground eventually, but for now it's up here. I also saw something called "Texas Lilac" at my garden center a few weeks ago...some other species.

Sign me up for lilac-flavored bacon lol - Also, cool to know you can mix it with sugar for your tea! I definitely grew up with lilac bushes that were planted around the corner of our rented home. It smelled so wonderful and I loved the purple color as a little girl. I definitely didn't realize there were so many varieties. I'll be moving, possibly, to zone 9 and am on a hunt for one that can grow there- be it in a container or ground. I just planted a couple of lilac bushes I'll be keeping small flanking my driveway here in zone 6a- formerly zone 5b :D

Great show! I have a bloomerang dark purple. Beautiful lilac. I give it bonemeal early spring and it is in full bloom. I grew up in south TX and did not know that bloomerang did not smell the same as French Lilac. I smelled mine and wondered what all the hype was about LOL. By the way I have been happily shopping. Picked up an additional Little Henry Itea, a Gatsy Gal and a Sonic Bloom. I love my PW shrubs. I have Kodiak Orange, Lil Kim Rose of Sharon, Summer Wine and Tiny Wine too. All great performers. I want to try Sweet and Low sweet box and can not find it. Happy May shopping and planting!

Lettuce Romaine friends! 😄 A-Nother great show! (Wish we could properly grow Lilacs and Peonies here in Texas!) Hey Stacey, in the 60s there were botanical single flower oil scents. I can’t remember the brand or name and really wish they still made them. My favorite was Hyacinth! You mentioned single flower perfumes which I would prefer over all the blended perfumes these days. Can you give me information for the ones you mentioned? Happy Mother’s Day! 💐

We have three Bloomerang lilacs and they bloomed really early this year. They’re almost done blooming! Last few years they’ve always bloomed at the end of May so it was a bit strange. Anyway, if you want to see tons of lilac varieties and you’re in Illinois, now is the time to visit Lilacia Park in Lombard, IL.

From central Ohio... I say li-LACK. My well established lilac bush is underneath a 15 foot high Japanese maple. So it doesn't produce many flowers. It also creates shadow over bearded irises planted nearby so those end up not flowering. Thinking about digging it up and moving to a better sunny spot. Any advice? It's about 5 feet tall and wide and easily over 20 years old.

Ideally, you'd want to move them when they are dormant - so this fall or next early spring. That said, it is possible to move them during growth, and it would be better to do that as soon as possible so it has some time to settle in before it gets too hot. I would not prune unless you need to, and would wait until next early spring to start fertilizing. ☺

I have 3 lilac bushes in the front yard. They were supposed to be dwarf, no more than 4' tall and 3' wide...Well, they are now about 7' at least and have turned into a hedge. They are beautiful so I just kept them that way. They are in full bloom now and stunning. I didn't realize that I could prune them so heavily and I think I will do that shortly after all of the blooms are gone. I would like them to be a little shorter. I do have a question...I have three rose bushes (PW) that have been gorgeous for many years and this year none of them have even one new leaf on them. I have no idea what happened. Any ideas? They are landscape rose bushes that rebloom and don't need deadheading. Thanks!
@pwcolorchoice
@pwcolorchoice Ай бұрын
That is quite a bit larger! But yes, you can prune them to help maintain a smaller size and like you mentioned, after they're finished blooming would be a good time to do so ☺ To make sure we're providing you with the best answer about your roses, could you send us in a picture of them and a description of the area they're planted in? You can send that to us here, www.provenwinners.com/feedback

Just wondering if you need to deadhead all the blooms on the reblooming lilac in order to get it to re-bloom?
@pwcolorchoice
@pwcolorchoice Ай бұрын
Great question! You can give it an all-over light prune after the spring bloom. This will help shape the plant and encourage a more abundant rebloom, although it will be delayed a bit. The summer flowers are produced on new growth. ☺

I cut down an old huge quince and now it is suckerkering all over the place. I really don’t like to spray these suckers but I may need to. I live in southern Indiana which was 6 b. Any suggestions? I don’t want to hurt the umbrella pine and holly plants near these suckers.
@pwcolorchoice
@pwcolorchoice Ай бұрын
You can try digging them out but if you want to use an herbicide, the best thing to do is not spray them but cut the stems and then immediately dab the cut surface with undiluted herbicide. A foam paintbrush works really well for this.

Cut it back just a bit, move it, and give it some good organic fertilizer, and get it established. I used to be afraid to move plants, but I have seen them go gangbusters once they get in the right spot. Best of luck, Vera!
