A Celebration of Sanctuary

Somerville was recognised as the university’s first College of Sanctuary in 2021 alongside our sister college, Mansfield College. Two years later, on Friday 11th November, we were thrilled to host a joint Celebration of Sanctuary at Somerville to raise awareness and promote positive discussion about sanctuary cities and universities in the UK.
Our special guests for the evening included humanitarian doctor and BBC Presenter Xand Van Tulleken; broadcaster Natasha Kaplinsky; and Afghan child rights activist Freshta Karim. They were joined by Somerville and Mansfield Sanctuary Scholars for a discussion about why it’s more important than ever for Universities to provide sanctuary, and how we all can live up to our responsibility to make Oxford and the UK a place of welcome.
