I was tempted to say that y=3 was a solution of the cubic equation "by inspection" just as 27 and 9 are "discovered" to be powers of 3 adding up to 36. I would however have lost the other roots which anyway lead to a messy conclusion of a log of an imaginary number which the author conveniently discards - not very rigorous for an olympian.

Before watching the video i tried solving. I got 4^x+8^x =36 2^2x +2^3x =36 2xln2 + 3xln2 = ln36 ln2(2x+3x) = ln 36 5x = ln 36 /ln 2 X= (ln 36/ln2)/5 My answer was wrong but i was wondering if the thought pattern i had was correct and if i made any mistake along the way. Thanks
