Merry Christmas Charlie Brown!
On Dec. 9th, 1965 - 49 years ago - nearly half of the US population tuned in to A Charlie Brown Christmas by Charles Schultz, an animated broadcast that featured the music of the Vince Guaraldi Trio.
Prior to its debut, producers were worried it was too religious, and the soundtrack was too jazz cutting edge for children's programming. Were they ever wrong! 15 million homes had eyes glued to that broadcast, and it has since become an iconic Christmas classic.
Until his death in July of 2021, drummer and Halifax native Jerry Granelli was the last surviving member of that original trio.
Here they are doing the true classic, Linus and Lucy.

Actually Jerry moved on from that time in his youth and set the groundwork for Free, aka Physicadlic, jazz. (So much music i his life)It was only inthe late 80's he returned to explore it again. That smile was always on his face. He was a wonderful teacher and a deeply practiced buddhist , I had the extraordinary privilage to be his student, his joy was real.

Dad lost his business in '65. The bankruptcy court took everything: the houses, the cars- everything. I can't tell you how bleak the holidays were that year, but as an 8 year old, I had "A Charlie Brown Christmas." Hearing "Linus and Lucy" may be bittersweet now, but it got me through some tough times throughout the years. Thank you, Vince Guaraldi and Charles Schultz: your genius is much appreciated.

That is because the drummer is one of the four members of the original band that composed this song for Peanuts. All his other brothers who were in the band passed away. He made music history when they played this song for the first time. The group wanted it to be played and ABC initially refused to have it played in the peanuts cartoon. They finally relented and it became music history.

I play piano in a local restaurant in Huntsville, AL, that bills itself as a "jazz piano bar"--it's called "Char". Tonight was my night on, and towards the end of the evening someone asked for "The Peanuts Song." I was happy to oblige. Of course, I won't put myself in the same league as Vince Guaraldi, but I have fun. Thanks for posting this. It reminds me of when I was a kid in 1964 and heard him and the guys play this and all the other great music on that show. And, Jerry Granelli looks and sounds great! Respectfully, PMH

@Joel Springman Absolutely. I was born 6 years after it aired for the first time, and my first memories of it was when I was 10 years old, in 1981. I still get emotional when I listen to it, just because it reminds me of my childhood and when my parents were still alive. An innocent , wonderful, uncorrupted childhood, with beautiful Christmas memories. I can almost smell my mom's home baked sweet bread, and turkey roasting in the oven. Those memories will stay with me forever. Peace to you and yours during this holiday season.

I'll say this much: The performance is wonderful and it's always lovely to hear a great band pay tribute to the Vince Guaraldi Trio, but I wasn't all that keen on the bass mix in the beginning. No fault to the players whatsoever. But when the bassist uses his bow for those low, sustained drawls, the mix gets really overpowered.

Interesting point, yes. But then again, who would have imagined that the famous dargason, an early 1600s Christmas jig, had very ribald lyrics?

Really well done... When I met Mr. Granelli in Boston, a little over 30 years ago, in a purely music-business context (and he was not my client, his wife was), I had been informed that he was a drummer... ...but I had no idea that he was Vince G's drummer, until reading the comments below just now. I can't fathom why I'm making this connection, but "mature" Jerry Granelli reminds me an awful lot of "mature" Ginger Baker, and it's not stylistically, it's something else.

I have a lump in my throat listening to you guys. Perfect. This song made me take piano lessons in 1976 as a teenager. I was terrible. I've heard this one the most complex piano arrangements out there. I think my problem was the minor key. Or just I had/have no talent.. Thanks for sharing.
