DENJIRO: I have here an air pump. It’s connected to this square can. What do you think will happen if I start pumping air?
BOY: Won’t the can start to get inflated?
DENJIRO: Let’s see what happens.
GIRL: The can got crushed!
DENJIRO: It didn’t get inflated, rather, it got crushed. Actually, I modified the air pump and made it into a suction pump.
NARRATOR: The key component of the suction pump is the part circled in red.
DENJIRO: I’m going to attach this glass valve in between the tube and can. If you look at the valve, when I push on the pump, the ball is plugging the opening, so air doesn’t flow through. When I pull on the pump, the ball is pulled up, and air can flow, so air is pulled out of the can. This apparatus is known as a “check valve.” By using a check valve like this, you can make the air flow in only one direction.
Actually, the genius physicist Nikola Tesla, who made many great inventions relating to electricity, invented this thing in front of me. This is Tesla’s check valve, and it is known as the “Tesla valve.” Tesla discovered that making a container in this sort of shape allows for a liquid to easily flow in one direction but not the other, just like how a check valve works.
NARRATOR: By connecting Tesla valves as shown here, liquid is able to easily flow downward on the left side and easily flow upward on the right side.
GIRL: What a strange structure.
DENJIRO: Now, let me use this pump here to make the liquid go back and forth. Since the liquid mostly flows in one direction, if you make the liquid go back and forth, it starts to accumulate in one container.
GIRL: I guess it wasn’t just electricity that Tesla used his talents for.
DENJIRO: I hope energy will bring you all happiness. Our magic word is "Happy Energy!"
