A Chennai home in a quiet neighbourhood embraces eclecticism with style

Interior designer and architect, and co-founder of A Design Co, Gowri Adappa’s home in Chennai is a perfect reflection of her design sensibility - an elegant blend of diverse styles. “I love designing spaces where you can’t pin down a particular style or theme. I enjoy revelling in the conflict and starting conversations about a space,” says Adappa. And nothing could be a greater testimonial to that philosophy than her own house, a 1,000-square-foot apartment in a quiet neighbourhood by the Bay of Bengal. A long and narrow open-plan living room that flows into the dining area in a white-walled backdrop suitably lends itself to the disparate elements that stitch the place together. The studiedly artless arrangement offers an insight into the personalities of the people occupying the space, but it also shines a light on Adappa’s almost intuitive approach to design. And that’s seen in the smallest of details, including the selection of art that is seen throughout the house. Her beautifully designed abode is what truly defines her.

I think the size of the picture on the wall behind the white sofa is disproportionate. It is making the whole space look smaller than it is. I did not like the wooden flooring too. Would have appreciated if it was a shade lighter. The flooring is giving a dull vibe to the room. I loved the dining area, the panelling, and the bedroom though. The bedroom is different. Bold. And yet perfectly homely.

It looks like the Eucharistic Cross to me..if it is indeed that then it shouldn't be kept in a bar cart..that's the only thing that didn't sit right with me personally but barring that it's an amazingly done up house.

More than anything else I love the art pieces, the style quotient in this home. Off white homes always attract me. But your style quotient is very high be it the Krishna wall hanging or the beautiful light shade that looks like a crumpled teak leaf. Your vases, the sofas and curtains all have a story to tell. I googled your company and saw some of the photos which were super chic. But dunno if such homes exist only in websites and youtube or if they translate to reality. Last year when I was designing my farm house I found no one in chennai who could do a classy job for interiors or furniture. I ended up importing stuff and designed my farm house myself. I hope to meet you when I visit India next if you accept projects in chennai I would love you to design my city apartment. Or do you work only with the Uber rich? Or do you work with any one who is interested in the art quotient and throws a challenge to you?
