OMG! DUANE....you said the magic word...RUM! I put spiced rum in my coffee with honey and some sort of cream/half n half/milk or powdered creamer. It's like the best thing I've ever had in my life. I'm ticked that's its not good for me like a salad or something. That's not fair.

This time of year is definitely a matter of changing from an outside focus to inside. Usually we get things ready for the Fall - Spring season and figure out what all of our programs will be for the upcoming season. We do plan on having additional items available come Fall. You showed them in an earlier video. I have a few pecked on by the birds, but mostly they are pulling off the tomato horn worms (and devouring my grapes, which I let them have).

@@irisdude the yellow pear tomatoes have done really well for us this year. We haven't had much success with the others though. I think we were a bit too late on planting them.

@@EdgeofNowhereFarm I'm in the same boat...we had frost here right up until the middle of march, so I didn't get my tomatoes going until after that. Otherwise they'd be in the ground mid-february. Those yellow pear tomatoes are fantastic, which is why it is good to save their seed year after year if not planted near other varieties where you can get cross pollination. My heirloom salad tomatoes are doing ok but since it got over 100 degrees out, they are not turning red anymore when ripe, they get to the orange stage and that's as red as they get, but are fully ripe. Never had that happen before...weird.

Hi Dwayne, I absolutely love love love your content you and your wife do from the beginning to now I have been watching your KZbin channel for over five years now and I've seen evolution. So I'm super happy for you and your wife proud of you both. As a fellow Gardener and lover of nature I currently have a small space Garden even with trees and my apartment complex on my balcony but my question to you is this, I currently live in Las Vegas,Nv which is the sister to the Arizona desert I was wondering what do you fertilize your trees with to make them produce. Many times you have shown us you planting your tree's choosing where you're going to put your trees the elements and how they affect your trees and all of that including your animals where you put your pens how you built your pins but the only thing missing is how do you fertilize your trees what do you do to feed them in the desert where the soil does have nutrients and high mineral content but there's so much more to it and I would like to know how you do it. So if you could do a video on your watering in the winter and the fall as well as in the spring and summer. And when and how you fertilize your plants that you're growing including your trees that would help many of us until 9a and 9b and other places that are considered the desert. Also how many trees do you have how many peaches how many apples I know you have four varieties if I'm not mistaken of apple trees but what do you have I'm so proud of you guys it's phenomenal. I'm really glad you're still here after all that time. You've seen a LOT of changes around here over the last 5 years, not to mention on 2 different farms! We do have a few videos on fertilizing that I'll link for you here; kzbin.info/aero/PLnT_wyDSIC9hhrpT7rbj1xbxAw7Ex7LpK We also have a few on irrigation, but it does vary a bit depending on the year. For example, right now our fig, apple, pear and mulberry trees are all being watered 2x/week. Each time they get 60 gallons of water. Citrus and stone fruit are still 1x/week (60 gallons). That once/week schedule is what we use in Spring and Fall. During the winter we don't irrigate at all if we get any amount of rain. This past year we didn't water from November until March! We have just over 180 fruiting trees and vines right now. There are 15 apple trees (7 varieties) and 12 peach trees (5 varieties). Thanks for the suggestion on getting another video out there on irrigation. We haven't covered that in a while!

That's a real paradise there. The bunches of grapes are huge. My favorite grapes are muscatel and seedless white. When I was young I remember the best plum I ever tasted in my whole life has been in Perth, Western Australia and it was such a deep red colour it was almost black!

We do tend to focus on the growing season as that's usually where most folks struggle. Winter is hit or miss with watering based on rainfall. If we get ANY rainfall we skip irrigation completely. Otherwise we usually water once or twice a month depending on weather. This past Winter I think we irrigated a grand total of once or twice from November - February. As for the amount, it's usually 60 gallons per tree when we do irrigate as that is enough to completely saturate the watering rings.

Hey guys. I also have a SatLap from Reid. On a recent trip to RSI, I was asking Reid about what is a good pollinator for the SatLap (I was assuming it needs a pollinator like other pluerries). Reid informed me that the SatLap is actually a cherry-plum and not a plum-cherry (pluerry). News to me; I have always though it was a plum-cherry. So maybe it should have been called LapSat? 😀 Oh BTW, the SatLap is also self-fertile.

All of our animals, except for the pigs, are locked up each night as we do have coyotes and other predators that roam the property at night. We have not had issues with daytime predators.

My favorite stone fruit are nectarines, I have one that’s white fleshed but I can’t remember exactly what it’s called, it’s a DWN tree, Arctic star or queen or something like that but it’s really really good. I love peaches but the fuzz puts me off a bit, lol, (I’ll eat the heck out of them anyway) so nectarines are perfect for me. I have a 3 or 4year old sweet treat pluerry but I’ve never got any fruit from it yet. It had some root knot nematodes so I had to dig it up and basically bare root it again. It’s come back fairly well but still small 2 years later, so I’m thinking the rootstock isn’t suited for my area so I’ll graft it to a different rootstock this winter and see if that helps ( don’t tell anyone 😉). All this wine talk has me wondering if your true motivation for getting bees is making Mead and not for pollination or honey, hahaha!

Jared, I'm surprised you haven't had luck with that DWN tree in Cali. I know they grow root stocks for a few different climates, but you would think it would be perfect for you there! As for mead, I'm all over that too. We've never made mead before, so it will be a learning experience for us!

I get them for $3 a piece when the Rate Fruit Growers have the annual scion exchange at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo. I have 20 Myro rootstocks left over and they’re super vigorous here so I can probably use one of those. I just will end up with a massive tree, lol.

We are also behind normal for harvest dates here in Vegas, and as usual, we're still behind you. My Santa Rosa plums are still blushing red, and my Anna and Tropic Sweet apples are all green and not close yet. Just interesting how we're both late because of Spring, and still the same delay behind you because of geography. This is my first harvest on the apples so I'm anxious. Thanks for sharing your experience because it helps me to know what to expect! And I definitely have a trip to RSI coming this fall!

Hey there Pam! Yes, the rabbits will munch on that sugarcane. Once it gets a bit larger the new leaves/shoots will be high enough they can't reach them and they can co-exist!

Hey Eric! They do get a nice red blush once they're fully ripe, but the birds get to them by that time and we don't have enough on the trees to share them, so we picked them about a week or so early this year. Same goes for the Anna, although not near as much red as the Tropic Sweet will get.

when do you guys typically pick the santa rosa (when there isnt so much bird pressure) Also, what is the largest factor for fruit size? is it the amount of water given during the growing season, is it the age and size of the tree (should i prune less) or is it thinning? I did thin them but the plum is somewhere between golf ball and a whiffle ball

The Santa Rosa is usually ready in Late June for us, but that can extend a bit, much like this year. If you're seeing them about the size of a whiffle ball that's a solid size Santa Rosa. They're usually no larger than that. Either way, consistent irrigation throughout the fruiting season and thinning after fruit set is the key to larger fruit.

It seemed to me you were not very impressed with Arctic Star. Your impression was like it’s very sweet, but nothing special; is that right? Do you like Flordaorince more? How about apricots/apriums? Any good feedback this year?

The Artic Star was a very good nectarine, but I prefer either the Texas King or Flordaprince. The white flesh nectarines (and peaches) usually have a little bitterness to the skin with very little or no tart to offset it, but that wasn't the case with the Artic Star. I (Duane) prefer more of a balance of tart and sweet, so it's not at the top of my list compared to those peaches. We didn't get a chance to do a comparison on the apriums/apricots this year, but the more mature trees seem to be producing larger/tastier fruit.

Is there an easy way to harvest mulberries? Picking them one by one is such of tenuous job

During the peak season we use a regular tarp stretched underneath the tree and vigorously shake each branch to allow the ripe fruit to fall on the tarp. I will say, I don't know that it saves a whole lot of time with some of the smaller fruit, because we usually spend just as much time removing debris (and unripe fruit) from the tarp as we would picking from the tree. However, we are able to clean them up in the shade where it's a lot more comfortable!

What organic fertilizer can I use on my citrus trees. My kumquat are growing like craze but don't get dark orange. They are juicy but not a lot of flavor.

Any citrus fertilizer would be fine. We use aged chicken manure and it works good.
