A very entertaining comedy, which I return to time and again, and it never fails to lift my spirits. Plus the wonderful scenery. An unforgettable movie, and certainly one of Anthony Hopkins's best roles.R.I.P. all the great actors herein who have passed on.

This film got bad reviews when it hit the screen...I loved it!! Maybe it's because being an actor, and having worked as an "Amateur" and Professional - and experienced some of the effects due to personality differences - that I see the reality. In my opinion...A first-class film...and performances...All round.

Should I mention this? Anthony Hopkins has stated that, like Sean Connery, he adores the 'Carry On' films and I cannot watch this without thinking that Ayckbourn's genius has tempted him occasionally into a variation on Kenneth Williams. Great fun, of course. Now, if only Paul Eddington's superb performance in Ayckbourn's 'Ten Times Table' had been filmed...

@@Tedinoz not all of it is good, neither is it all mediocre. I do have a preference for British film though, and as you say, that's just my point of view. I think it is probably the fact that most of it that we see in Australia is high quality. I don't doubt that there's a poorer standard of film made there also, so I'm not picking on Australian film uniquely.

It is interesting how anybody that is from their own country don't seemed to like films made from their own. I love Australian films but I know most Australians I met told me they hate Australian films. I like British films but I know most of my peers don't like it because it's too close to home and a lack of escapism. With this film it has charm from the cast but it does feel it could of been made in the 1960s.

Cinema can reflect a time and place. For a British audience it's more realistic than say, Star Wars. Passage of time makes a difference. It captures a moment, even reading car number plates, his company car was 9 years old.

so that is scarborough. lived in toronto many years, and had never seen the original in any form. those years have not been kind to the toronto scarborough. I've never been interested in the theatre as an art form in and of itself, which is my loss I know, but a movie like this does communicate what a hold it has for many people.

Watching first 15 minutes and thinking , "vultures feeding off of one another's pain". For a moment's respite in the "stage light", and a momentary numbing of their pain, personalities suffer any indignity to their souls. The reason humanity needs wars now and then, it seems. A noble purpose, to lift us out of the mud and into redemption where hero's are born.
