If anyone doesn't know, the whole "coin eyes" thing is an ancient Greek tradition where the dead man who had the coins would use them to pay Charon, the Ferryman of River Acheron (the river that leads to the underworld).

Always look forward to seeing this on tv around the holidays. Some critics tore it a new one for being so dark but honestly I think that's kind of the point of the movie. It's supposed to be dark and uncomfortable. Outside the whole flapping jaw thing from Marley's ghost and the pointless chase seen through town with the ghost of the future I think the movie is great. And holy moly the emotions that it feeds through Bob after Tim dies is just, damn

For those who don’t know, the reason why Marley’s jaw is bound up is because, to keep the dead man’s mouth from opening into a gaping maw, they’d bind the jaw shut with a handkerchief or a piece of cloth. Today, modern funeral homes stitch the mouth closed with metallic suturing used just behind the lips. A good case example of the former tradition was uncovered during the exhumation of three of the crew members of the Franklin Expedition. The cold environment not only preserved their soft body features, but it also preserved the clothing they wore as well as the cloth that was bound around their jaw. John Torrington, the most well-preserved of the three, has the most visible example of this, which you can see online (if you dare wish to look). This is also why, in all of the adaptations, we see Marley still wearing the jaw binding as _that_ was the last image Scrooge had in mind of his old friend. It is a Memento Mori - a reminder of death - that is used to remind Scrooge of the reality of his own mortality and what his fate could be.

This movie is great, because it stayed true to the book. However, The Muppet Christmas Carol is my ultimate favorite.

Why dude got his hand out? I'm guessing he's wants payment for the burial right? I love way he lifts up his eyebrow like, "Keep it coming." Scrooge took them coins off Marley so quick. He said, "I'm getting my coins back some way, some how." 🤣

Yes, that's it. Scrooge has to pay for the burial but you can see how hard it is for him to give one coin

How about the version with Patrick Stewart as Scrooge or the 2003 Cartoon version with Nicolas Cage as Marley
@joshuamlee98
@joshuamlee98 2 жыл бұрын
@@larizarichard08the Patrick Stewart version is my favourite and he is my favourite Scrooge. His version of Scrooge felt more of natural depression as opposed to forced anger like most scrooges you find. I think the fact he could barely cry and had to force laughter out of him to break his mould said it all. To me, Carrey’s Scrooge had a natural anger by habit, determined not to look back but wasn’t suppressed enough to stop crying or laughing
