Former owner here. I think the current owner reached out in the last video but I can't remember. Anyway, this car has a bit of a confession to make- it's had a refresh! When I bought the car the engine has just been rebuilt after sitting in storage for 18 years. It's had new cylinder sleeves, piston rings and bearings. It may have had new pistons but I forget. Cylinder head was also gone over from what I remember. I had a huge wad of invoices from various engine parts suppliers sent to me when I took delivery of it, plus rebuild pictures. Off the top of my head, the rebuild happened at 95000 miles and I drove it up to ~104500 miles. The original carburettor, air cleaner and intake plenum came to me pre-ruined and it would never run properly, so I replaced the carburettor with a terrible Chinese Solex clone, which worked just as badly until the accelerator pump nozzle fell off while I was on the A303, jamming the throttle open and then getting swallowed by the engine. Don't worry, it was brass, and a borescope showed the cylinder was just fine. By this point I was pretty fed up, so I saved up and bought the twin barrel carburettor, plenum and intake manifold the car presently has. The carburettor was from a ZX in Portugal if memory serves me right. I took it apart and put new gaskets in it, but it probably needs a bit more than that. It certainly gave the car more pep. Hopefully this explains the surprise 75 screaming horses underneath. By the way, the label where the tax disc should be was my old parking permit. There should also be a label on the side of the dashboard showing the last oil change I did to it. I do still have the original tax disc holder and the plates, the car originally came from David Hiam Ltd. in Birmingham.

Good to see this on a TU engined 1.4 BX, I had one years ago when I lived a little further south in Portsmouth and the TU engine suffered with condensation issues inside the rocker cover in the winter , which made a nasty emulsion inside the rocker cover, there was no water in the oil or radiator, so I made a bong with a tupperware pot with a lid on it and attached it to the breather pipe on the oil cap and the engine breather and mounted it to the passenger side bulkhead, as the engine warmed up in winter instead of the moisture being trapped in the rocker cover it was collected in the bong. I showed it to Citroen in Hilsea Garage while eyeing an XM on their showroom floor and they said it was a common complaint and although about 15 years to late it was a great idea. I never had such issues with the AX we had with a TU engine. I always used to change the oil and filter about 3 thousand miles, these days with more modern oils its nearer 5 thousand miles. You said watch for smoke, there was a little puff of smoke as the engine started to decelerate.
@docnele3 ай бұрын
My girlfriend has 205 with TU1M and 250K kilometers on it. It was making mayo only when there was some oil other than Total. When I took it to warm it up, it was vaporing through the oil dipstick hole! I don't understand how that engine is still alive since she is driving less then 1km to the first full stop, and when I change it once per year at around 4K-5K km it is still see-trough because oil never warms up. Anyway, that smoke can be valve seals and even bad mixture, as I found out on 205 when oxy sensor cable got disconnected.

I have never driven a 1.4 BX but knowing how perky TU-engined cars usually feel, I would love to try one. I used to have a 205 1.4 XR and it felt absolutely mental. I also happen to own a BX 1.6 TRS and I've always found it more sluggish than it probably should be with 90bhp. I really have no idea why, I've changed almost everything ignition related, rebuilt the carb and checked the camshaft which appears to have no wear on it. I also used to have a BX 1.6 GTi (Finland/Greece export special I believe) with the 115bhp engine from 205 GTi and that felt quite zingy after you got past 4000ish rpm. Please keep the dyno videos coming, I find them very interesting to watch!

Discrepancy between 75bhp quoted for Pugs vs 72bhp quoted in BX for nominally same TU3 could be due to DIN power quotex has to be in an As-installed condition with ancilliaries (alternator, pas pump, hydraulic pump and vehicle specific exh and air intake) I believe the hydraulic pumps on Citroen do consume a small but significant amount of power. I have run Xantias and 406s with same 2.0hdi engine and same gear ratios. The 406s always got about 2mpg better fuel mileage than the Xantias. The Xantias are slightly lighter. Aero about the same.

@UPnDOWN3 ай бұрын
I mean, in theory, kinda, but not enough to cancel out the energy used to drive it.
@erik_dk8423 ай бұрын
All modern rolling roads are strictly inertia, some of them have brakes to slow down the heavy rollers after the run. The computer software knows the inertia of the rollers and calculates the horsepower backwards from the acceleration. At a steady speed, the only resistance is in the bearings. Engine brakes used to measure tractor power can apply a constant resistance, most often by pumping water through a restriction

On a BX? Cooling system has plenty in reserve. Biggest issue with the TU in these is no oil/coolant heat exchanger. Its getting the oil temp down that helps, not the coolant. Fan is two speed, so often cuts in at slow speed. Only goes nuts when it really gets hot. (98c or more)
