Back in the 1960s I “helped” on a farm. They used old tyres on the clamp. Newton Crowther Hollas (what a magnificent name), my great uncle, burned, with a red hot poker, 5 holes in each side wall to let the rain drain away. He worked on Soyland Moor above Ripponden Yorkshire, and in the winter water in the tyres would freeze solid and fill with snow. All the hard work with the poker was worth it! I miss the place and the times so much.

When you get more tyres, try and get them cut in half (around the circumference). It'll make them easier to handle and stop them holding water. Might be worth a try.

I am sure you will already know this Tom, if you grab a handful of silage and squeeze it in your fist and then let it go and then re-clench your fist you should be able to feel the sugar in the silage because you should have sticky fingers! Always better to cut the face of a clamp so it is shear and smooth all the way across too so that air doesn't cause wastage. I know a few farmers going off contractors for clamp silage and moving onto round bale silage done by themselves. That way they go when their grass, the weather and the timing is ready for a good harvest. All the best JDZ.

Around here we cut the sidewalls off tire and just use that to hold down the plastic. Works just as good as a whole tire plus no water for mosquitoes to breed in plus easier on your back.
