A Climb To The Peak Of Arunachala Mountain

Last week I went upto the Peak of Arunachala Hill guided by a good friend. Sri Parthasarathy, as the itch to climb surfaced again after 25 years, before which period I had already climbed the Peak thrice in the early 1990's. That was by the less strenuous Deepam route from town.
The Hill it is said is about 2600 odd feet high. But that day when I climbed via the Skandasrhram route, it appeared more than 3 times that height because of the stress involved. But it was worth every effort, because the Hill literally ensconces from all sides as we go up like an embrace from Arunachala Himself.
Being at the top for me was an experience of joy and awe as if being somehow taken in by Arunachala.
Though not a high Hill (if read as a mere hill), for people worshiping Arunachala, it seems to generate that sense of Joy being at the Peak.

NOTE ON AN ERROR : At 23.19 minutes in the video I have mentioned that the seven springs on the Hill 'unfortunately do not seem to exist now'. It stands corrected as "all the seven springs may not have water, although the ridges still exist'. In fact, there is one spring with water that is shown in the video at 25.29 minutes.

I could climb the Hill along with some brahmacharis, during the Deepam festival of 2012. It took about 3 hours to go up. We were up just in time for the Deepam to be lit, at 6 pm. Return was faster but, it was too dark to find the way down. In the dark , we heard a voice asking to go that way and it was a Yogi who must have been moving around the hill even during such a dark night . Finally we made to the bottom and one ashram, gave us some nice refreshments. We felt more energy than we started the trip.

brother I am also going to make this journey but I do not have hiking shoes. do you recommend it? Bhagwan himself never had one but we are not him. can I do in slippers?

Yes, you can. Make sure the soles have a good grip. Right now, the weather is too hot to climb. A small caveat-climbing to the peak is legally not allowed, unless you can beat it!

I have climbed the Arunachala from the other route i. e. from the point where people's settlement is there. This route, though it is tougher, takes less time ( about two hours if I recall correctly as I had climbed it long back i.e sometime in the year 2000).

Some questions; asking with great respect. 1. So climbing is allowed certain times, how far can one ascend? 2. By difficult do you mean technically or energy wise? 3. Is this done barefoot? 4. My advice for you would be to leave the idea of climbing to the peak. You will have to seek governmental permission, which will not be granted to you. You or anyone can climb upto a point called Skandasramam from Ramansram side, which is a lovely path. It is a under 30 min. Climb for a fit person. Even this could prove tough for elderly. You can watch an earlier video which I posted of the climb upto Skandasramam.

@@RamMohanABvideos Thank you so much for your quick reply! We live in the northeastern US and we hike in the White Mountains in New Hampshire and Maine, an area which can be very rocky and steep. I have always had a great love for Bhagavan and wanted to someday go to Tiruvanamalai (my own guru was also from the south, most of our hikes were done after His Mahasamadhi). I have had three Ramana Maharshi dreams, two of them were while we were camping in these mtns. I will definitely watch your Skandashram video! Again, thank you!

For public it is totally banned to climb beyond Skandasramam. No question of fees or tickets whatsoever. Police may give permission to people with pull in the system. (Locals may also help, if one knows how).

Lot of questions! Unfortunately, climbing to the Peak has been banned for some years now. You need special police permission for it. But things are possible with local help!

@@RamMohanABvideos ...yep, first they closed the Inner Path, which was a real shame. Then when I was there 5 years ago the climb to the top was no longer allowed with large signs warning of 'Large Fines and Imprisonment'....so we climbed to the top anyway. There are also lots of young guys you can pay as guides to take you to the top, they obviously pay the right people. Money seemingly takes care of everything in India. I'll be back in Tiru in two weeks time.

Officially climbing to the peak is prohibited. But for 2/3 weeks after Deepam a few people will be climbing from behind the temple early morning (the Deepam route). You can follow them. The route will also be easier.

No problems with animals, but it is a tough climb. More importantly, you may be prevented from climbing to the peak because there is a government ban on it.
