Of course you need to put the inmates to do normal work so they will gradually get used to it. It works because once a prisoner has to wear working clothes instead of prison clothes, make thinking process in order to finish the job, and feel like he is actually being rewarded for all this. Finnish open prison is actually a lifestyle changing center.

The Finnish approach is pragmatic, isolating the low-risk inmates is unproductive and expensive, makes more sense to give them tools to change their life.

Also free workforce. Cheaper to use these guys than pay 2000€ a month for some other dude to do the same job.
@mikrokupu

RoyalFri It used to be like that in the past, open prison inmates were building roads and airports. Now the idea is to rehabilitate, not to "pay back" by working, most jobs these days require education and experience anyway. And naturally working or studying is voluntary, though many are willing to, the inmates are paid for the work. Just checked the open prison inmates can earn max 5e per hour, minus possible taxes. In some cases you can keep your civil job, naturally your life is still controlled.

RoyalFri they actually get paid for their work. There was one guy who earned 2600 € per month in prison and people weren’t too happy about that

The reason it works is because these people have no reason to hate anyone, so they can't blame anyone but themselves. They are treated like people, with the exception that they don't have freedom and that is a pretty horrible feeling to any sane person. It's a lot more effective at turning people's lives around than any other system.

The reason it work's are because they are low risk prisoners. You can't put gang members in this kind of prison. I know this because i work in an open prison in scandinavia (Denmark) as well. Wed put gang members in there and it doesn't work at all.

Especially for low level offenders, putting them in an American style closed cell with a career criminal probably wont help much. You're just gonna radicalize them, change them from a person who made a mistake into another career criminal. It's a different situation if they've committed triple murder or something, then they would be locked in a more guarded facility for a long time. Tought about "crime needs harsh punishment" might work well in theory, but this sort of rehabilitation works well in real life, which is a big difference.
@jakewalberg4177
@jakewalberg4177 3 жыл бұрын
This is a bit misleading clip. Those sentenced to less than one year's sentence may, at their discretion, be placed directly in an open institution to reconcile the sentence. The conditions for the placement of those who have been sentenced to longer sentences in open institutions will be assessed at some point in the execution of imprisonment. Only those who have been behaving well and who are not dangerous to others, will have a chance to be transferred to open prison at the end of their sentences. Escaping the open prison results every time in placement in a closed prison. For such inmates, it's not possible to be placed in open prison again.

Except when you're in an open prison you need to work and you can't control your own life in any way. If you treat prisoners like animals, they'll turn into animals, as evidenced by the insanely inefficient system in the U.S. that only manages to radicalise inmates. In the Nordics most prisoners are treated like people, and they get used to a working life, and when they eventually get out of prison they almost never go back because they don't want to lose their freedom. Prisons in most places are meant to punish, prisons in the Nordics are meant to rehabilitate, so that most of these people will actually some day be useful to society instead of living their entire life being fed and clothed by the government. Of course dangerous criminals don't get to enjoy open prisons like these guys.

as a finn I think our court system is way too lenient and the punishments should be harder. generally it tends to be slap on the wrists even for hardcore murderers and other other pillagers. we also have people who should not see the light of day ever again and yet the system treats them practically with silk gloves. tho I did read that we might get rid of the first time offense so that we can punish people harder even on their first time. this has been caused by the increasing crime rate that the immigrants have brought with them. like the terrorist who stabbed people in turku, he got a life sense not too long time ago. tho does it mean its just 6 years and then few years on parole. doesnt need to be an expert on the matter to know that if this maniac gets out his gonna do it again within two months.
@sebastiantiainen2749
@sebastiantiainen2749 6 жыл бұрын
MrAnimepredator a life sentence is a life sentence, you'll get out on parole after an average of 12 years but the terrorist will sit 20 before anyone even considers parole, and after that he'll be sent back to Morocco. People downplay the sentences too much. As an example, a hefty fine is worse than a year in prison. The problem with the finnish judicial system is that it is way too slow

No, what you should do is not take in illegal migrants, don’t make the system harsher on your own people. You’re using feelings more than your mind. We feel that punishments should be harsher but when looking at the evidence, we see that the finish way equals lower crime. It may seem soft but evidence doesn’t lie.

This works on first time, soft core criminals. Give them lifeskills and value added skills and they can rejoin society. This is the only kind of criminal Scandinavian countries see. Non have experience with the hard core violent criminal whos main motivation is violence, brutality and cruelty as an end to itself. For thise kind of criminal, they dont want to work in any legitimate job, nor can you trust them not to turn on you. For these kinds of people there is only permanent segregation from open society in a high security prison. Did you know the most dangerous countraband item in a prison is a cell phone, tablet or laptop computer. It allows locked up gang leaders to coordinate all kinds of major crimes beyond the prison.

Life quality.Do you want nazis or somewhat normal people.You get what you give.some criminals are very fast thinking brains and if you give them a challange or a chance they might just choose booring tax paying life.or not but every time one out of two choses the booring not interesting way you cut the crime rate down 50%.what they are doing wrong in the states is for example is going full out violence on the most brutal people there is.I am a very big guy and if I get 4 guys are screaming in my face I go mental but if a lovely polite half my size lady ask me in a nice way I just might do what she wants just because I don't want to ruin her day.Of course there is a risk but if you send in two people one lovely charming for talking and one big for muscle it should work just fine.Ok this does not work on junkies or sick people.If a old grannie starts to make you food and you have a problem with that you are gone.grannies rule!

On the contrary, incentivizing good behaviour and societal conformity in prisoners. No one does crime because they _might_ have a chance of going to work as a part of their sentence if they are deemed suitable. However, they might stop future criminal activity once given a chance at a normal life and shown how it is done. There's more crime when there are more marginalized people. The aim is to demarginalize ex-convicts.
