‪@MerlinsOldSchoolGarage‬ revisits the Yellow Submarine engine. After 30 years under water, this boat was resurrected by ‪@FabRats‬ and MOSG when the water levels were so low they were able to drive to this sunken vessel site. After the Yellow Submarine series many asked for a detailed look at the engine and how it was preserved under the water for over 30 years! This video recaps the journey and Merlin revisits the engine with Makay and tears it down to nothing inspecting every aspect of the engine. We hope you all enjoy the closer look at the original Yellow Submarine engine. Thanks for watching!

I live on the Great Lakes and I've seen boats and cars that have been underwater 4 over a 100 years and they are still pristine. Fresh water makes such a difference especially if it's really deep down. Now if that was salt water there would have been nothing left. But I am still amazed by the shape it's in because it did sit out of water for quite some time before you guys got it.

Was gonna say similar, other than some of the crap I've pulled has been from shallower water (I'm next to Lake Mich). I assume the oil floated & coated stuff, and perhaps oxygen deprivation... Can't hurt that most was higher quality metal, lol. At least it wasn't covered with quagga & zebra mussels like everything is here, hard to even recognize shapes...

Titanic still looking good, except for that broke in half thing. Oxygen, heat and moisture are needed for corrosion. Take one of those away, none or very slow, corrosion. Titanic very cold and no oxygen. Even in salt water, which does encourage electrolytic action, is not going anywhere.

@@Derf1313 I've seen the footage. What I see is easily identifiable as a ship. Cameron is not a metallurgist and neither am I, but I know what a broke in half ship looks like. The Titanic will be there in similar condition when your great, great grandchildren die of old age. Cameron is being dramatic and telling a "story". Corrosion is slowed way, way down if not entirely stopped at the depth where the Titanic lays, regardless of what the Hollywood directer says. My statement is the science, not contravention.

Not a Cleveland. Fords are never really differentiated as small block - big block. I guess 302-351 Windsor & 351 Cleveland could be considered a small blocks. FE series 352 - 390- 427-428 are kind of a medium block. 385 series 429-460 could be considered a big block, and that is what this one is. It's got canted valve heads like a Cleveland but they are different heads. I'd say it's probably a 429, Look at the size of those ports & valves!

Also wondering if there was a water barrier caused by combustion gases and oil when the motor was last shut off. Maybe less air in the water that far under the surface? Doesn't the air cause the corrosion and rust and wouldn't oil inhibit it?
@officialoverlander
@officialoverlander 3 ай бұрын
@samwalker3441 yea, the air is what would cause the rust and if it was running when it went down there is a strong possibility that the ignited gas could have consumed the oxygen in the cylinders, if you notice, there were only a couple of cylinders that were pretty rusty, so it could have been on a down stroke and sucked in it's last bit of fuel and air in those cylinders.

Water won't hurt those iron engines. I would wager that 98% of the corrosion and rust occured After the water receded and the air got to it. 100 feet diwn there isn't enough oxygen for corrosion to really set in. The original carb and other white metal parts would have rotted under water though. Thanks for sharing 🇨🇦

Hey there Merlin, many years ago I spent a summer diving on moorings replacing chain , they were often 30,40 feet down in freshwater and it was a lime stone bed floor to the bottom to the lake. When I would pull the chain. It would be as thin as fence wire above the bottom, but any chain that was laying in the mud was absolutely brand new after 20 years. My suspicion was that the lime itself created an anoxia in the bottom mud, and prevented corrosion/oxygenation. I think in the situation you’re experiencing that’s what took place at that depth, there was a limited oxygen supply and that’s why oxidation with minimal. Another Parmenter suggested that the majority of the oxidation ust was probably happened in the last dried out period. Thanks so much for your videos watch them regularly. Thanks again best Steve.

The corrosion probably wasn't as bad until the engine was exposed to the desert heat when the water receded and then it took off and rusted out.The rest of the bottom end was pretty much sealed but the wear on the moving parts couldn't have been taking place when it was a floating vessel. How many hours did the motor have on it before it sank. I still think too it was pretty amazing she fired up and ran. That was some crazy stuff right there. I enjoyed what you guys all had a part in doing and that was a great day for the owner to get their boat back take care guys have a great holiday. Looks like a 460 Ford with oval port heads. Had a Glastron with that engine with a Berkley pump. Would fill it up cheap at Arco gas stations and slalom ski across Lake Mead. When not boating, we were hauling ass on our sport bikes at 170. The 90s were fun 😂

Thanks for the Memorial Day note at the end. I nearly lost my life in service to the USA. A blast killed 3 and wounded 6 of us in March of 1968. Memorial Days are rough. Thanks for the note 🪖

I know I am repeating what has already been said, but this just blows my mind too. I would have never believed that boat, with that motor, would ever have run again. Perfect example of not judging a book by its cover.

It's still mind blowing that you guys were able to get that motor running and working again after it sat on the bottom of a lake for as long as it did.

Living in the foot hills of the Adirondacks in upstate New York . We see bolt heads reduced by one to two sizes is normal every day working on 10 year old vehicles. But it is cool to see the inside of that motor. Thanks for showing and sharing!

WOW!! I can't believe that engine was under water for 30 years!! That is remarkable! Thanks Merlin and Makay for sharing this great story. I saw the videos of the build and giving the boat back to the owners. What a great series that was. Loved the entire thing!!!

That old engine sounds amazing, especially considering how long it spent underwater. It seems a shame to not resurrect the old beast. It deserves a second life. And that shop looks like a gearheads heaven.

There is a video from Paul when they took the boat back to the owners. The boat stalled during a storm. He had his wife and young kids on board. No body would stop to help as everyone was heading to shore for cover. One boat stopped as the boat was going down and the husband tossed them his baby! Everyone on the boat survived!!
