A Closer Look: Batman Returns' Impact on Children (July 1992)

I had a great deal of trouble looking for information on this program, but A Closer Look appears to be a talk show hosted by Faith Daniels that delved into current issues with guest interviews. This episode captured on one of my tapes discusses the release and impact of Tim Burton's Batman Returns (1992). Although rated PG-13, Warner Bros.' marketing department made the ill-chosen decision to sell Batman-related merch to kids with naturally controversial results - A Closer Look delves into this issue.
It's fascinating to see how these controversies were handled twenty-six years ago - the more bizarre to me is probably the idea of a "junior" movie reviewer which on the one hand seems great for determining suitable films for your kids but also raises many issues in itself (like a 10-year-old going to see a PG-13 movie to begin with). Alas, the tape cuts off before the first commercial break, but what's present here is still an exciting watch.

Thanks to everyone who has been commenting and watching this video since I uploaded it! I never thought that this would be the VHS clip I share that'd explode so much, but I suppose I underestimated the Batman fandom community. Just a reminder that, as detailed in the description, the VHS clips I share are NOT my own and neither are the opinions present in them. I simply own the tape from which I digitized the footage. Discussion on the cultural influence of Batman Returns in the 90's is enthusiastically welcome, just don't forget that the people in this are as much a product of their time as the footage and the Happy Meal toys.

Not only that, but the supposedly "tamer" 1989 film had two characters saying "shit," hookers, a neon sign advertising strippers, a foot fetish, an erection innuendo, a phallic gun, two unmarried sexual encounters (one of which we were in the bedroom for immediately afterward), dead bodies being used as dummies, facial scarring, and chemical warfare. Roger Ebert literally wrote in his review, "It's rated PG-13, but it's not for kids" - one of the most ridiculous things anyone has ever written.

moshomaniac1 Yeah Batman Returns did have a LOT of weird and disturbing things like the Penguin biting people’s noses off, his unpleasant death, an Attempted Rape, Batman burning one of the clowns alive, the Ice Princesses death which I still hate because she was cute, Selina’s mental breakdown, and then Catwoman/Selina frying Max alive. It clearly was NOT a kids movie but compared to Terminator 2??? It was tame with the violence but when it came to kinkiness??? It wasn’t for kids and nobody even had sex in the film.

Then there's "willow" which was so bad, they already removed it from netflix. The list goes on and on, and it's still going, but what do you expect from the party of extremism that believes men can get pregnant. I mean. They elected a guy who can't remember his own name or where he is, who falls up stairs, and falls off his bike. Who literally pooped his pants in Rome, and destroyed the great economic the conservatives had going for us. Taliban likes biden though, he did give them how many millions of dollars in military equipment. Oh... lets not mention his son or whatever is on that laptop, or the classified documents that he keeps being caught with. If it makes you feel better to think conservatives are responsible for a couple bad batman movies, which was all about McDonald's selling crappy toys. Ok then. But that becomes too much (Batman & Robin) so then they go back to being dark & gritty (The Dark Knight Trilogy) but when that becomes too much (Batman v Superman), it goes back to being lighthearted & cheesy (Josstice League). This is very interesting. Thank you so much for uploading this! And my god parents back then were idiots. The movie strictly said it was PG-13. Which means it's mainly meant for teenagers or adults. If they took their young kids to see it then they take full responsibility. Warner Brothers spelled it out beautifully. I saw Batman Returns when I was very little and I was never scared but I admit there were some scary characters in it. But that's the point of Batman. The scary people are attacking and then Batman comes in and beats up the scary people and Save the Day.

I've created a timeline outlining the progression of parental stupidity: 1984 - Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom comes out with a rating that says PARENTAL GUIDANCE SUGGESTED, SOME MATERIAL MAY BE INAPPROPRIATE FOR CHILDREN. The movie is a sequel/prequel to a very violent film and they still bitch that the movie was too dark and violent and that a middle ground rating between PG and R has to be established so they know if the movie is REALLY inappropriate for children. 1992 - Batman Returns comes out with the middle ground rating that says it is inappropriate for children under 13. It is also a sequel to another movie that was also very dark and violent and parents still pitched a fit that it was inappropriate for their under 13 aged child despite it being rated the rating that they insisted on so they would know it was inappropriate for their under 13 aged child? 2016 - Deadpool comes out with a R rating (inappropriate for children under 17), parents still take their children to see it and still throw a tantrum that it's too violent, has too much language and sex even though the rating clearly says it's for adults. You know there comes a point where parents have to take responsibility for their children and quit looking for someone to blame for their own bad parenting.

Space Ace I’m literally careful of what I would show a child. For example I would not let a child under 13 watch The Goonies because that has crude humor such as joke about nude photos and there’s are dead body’s and many violent moments that are beyond not being suitable for children but you know what I literally love PG-13 movies before I was 13 and I love adult show when I was much younger. Hell my parents played horror shows like Kolchak and crime shows like Hawaii Five O and Monk and I wasn’t traumatized. I even remember my parents playing So I Married an Axe Murder next to me when I was a kid and I came out completely fine.

The children are not to blame. The whole problem and reason for the backlash and controversy was because they wrongly classified the film with a PG rating initially when it wasn't suitable for children's viewing (despite the irony of Batman essentially being created for children) and McDonalds (a more child focussed/friendly restaurant back then) was involved in marketing and promoting Batman Returns and it's merchandise to children without even inquiring into and seeing the film beforehand, which reflects that they were more concerned with and cared more about cashing in and making money from it than with whether the film was appropriate for children or not. If the film was classified with a M15+ rating originally as it should have been and parents didn't allow their children to see it (despite the irony of Batman essentially being created for children) there wouldn't have been a backlash and such controversy. And it seems Burton became the scapegoat essentially when the problem was the aforementioned, and with regard to suitability for children, the script not being suitable for children. Also, it seems McDonalds wanted to 'jump on the bandwagon' and cash in on the film's success after the success of the previous film and may have had an influence with regard to the film wrongly being classified with an inappropriate PG rating to suit themselves/their business when McDonalds should not have had any involvement, influence, say and power in the matter at all (except for excusing their own foolishness afterward). Corporations and corporate business should not influence and dictate art and media.

What’s so funny about that is they said the thing about Batman v Superman! Batman doesn’t kill, but in both Burton Batman movies he does! Parents complained about Deadpool and Logan, but they took their kids to see those movies knowing it was rated R so it’s on them! Deadpool 2 was also criticized where they tried to appeal to kids by making a PG13 version of it. So you see people will always complain about dark movies, but the ironic thing about it was all three of those movies were successful and still are! Deadpool was already successful enough to have a sequel, but had we not had Deadpool,we never would have gotten “Logan” which became the best X men movie of all time! It was also the last time we would see Patrick Stewart and Hugh Jackman reprise their roles! What Justice League did to Batman was insulting to me as a huge Batman fan! Because it was successful it makes me fear for the future of Batman! I have this feeling Robert Pattinson is going to ruin the character by making one liners left to right! That’s just not Batman and we could possibly lose Batman movies again if they do campy Batman again!

Danny: Penguin's total goal was to hurt kids. Kid you claim to have seen the movie twice right? Then you should know that Penguin's backstory is that his parents rejected him and tossed him into the sewer in the hopes he'd die all because he was ugly and was driven insane by years of rejection and now wanted to kill kids for revenge. Also how much did your parents and the studio pay you to humiliate yourself like this...because it wasn't enough.

@@Kevin112681 And yet the 10 year old was allowed to sit through an R rated movie whose main characters are a juvenal delinquent, a psychotic urban terrorist, a killer robot disguised as a cop and a killer robot who shoots up a mall, not to mention the nightmare inducing war in the future and Judgment Day scenes. I also seem to recall they didn't seem to care about the ads that were promoting toy lines and video games FOR KIDS based on R-rated movies like Terminator, Aliens, Predator, Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street. Once again I apologize for the tangent but I hate these hypocritical self-titled "Moral Guardians" who are like "Think of the children but any criticism of my parenting is hate speech."

So, do we dislike the video for contributing to the end of the Burton/Keaton era, or do we like it to show appreciation for the uploader?

Well, Joel Schumacher considers that choosing and picking his own projects very carefully such as 1983's DC Cab, 1985's St. Elmo's Fire, 1987's The Lost Boys, 1990's Flatliners, 1991's Dying Young, 1993's Falling Down, 1994's The Client, 1996's A Time to Kill and 1999's 8mm were very important to him. Except 1995's Batman Forever and 1997's Batman and Robin, of course.

Waaaa 😭😭😭😭, it’s too scary, I need my security blanket, there’s too much violence, I need my safe space, waaaa 😭😭😭😭. Man, I’ve seen that movie when I was around these kids ages in my local theater when it came out and if anything, I was disappointed that it wasn’t scarier and more violent than it was.

I never understood why a PG-13 film was marketed to kids
@PokemonBoy-de4jd

Probably because PG-13 doesn’t restrict kids from entering a theater that’s playing a movie with that rating.

Wrong. The problem was because of the inappropriate PG-13 rating and the writers of the sequels.
