To be honest, most "third class people" at that time lived and ate much more modestly in everyday life than on this ship, they could only dream of running water next to the bed and such a rich meal. I was pleasantly surprised at how friendly and nicely decorated the third class common rooms were.

As a titanic nerd I am exceptionally impressed. I learned many new things about the ship and life aboard. By the way the café Parisian , open to all first class passengers, was supposedly the favorite hang out space for the young and wealthy. Use of the the A La Carte restaurant as a separate independent franchise, was found on all White Star Line ships at the time. And as you said you had to pay extra when you purchased your ticket to be able to dine at that restaurant.

Great presentation! Meals and dining fit for a king and queen, but so sad that all that great detailed beauty and meals ended up at the bottom of the sea, destroyed and never to be again like the iconic Titantic! I feel like the 3rd class despite all the restriction had much more personal freedom. With the first class there was far too much expectations that it really didn’t offer much personal freedom. You were expected to be here or there, act a certain way, dress a certain way. Their lives seem very stifling. Yes I know you can sense this with the movie, but this breakdown just really hits the nail on the head. I learned a lot from this. I can also see how some aspects of each class has lived on in modern cruse ships but became mixed and unfortunately taking some of the negatives from each class as well. It certainly is fascinating.

@@lowcomp9638 the corset was an aspect of the garment, I think of it like a bra of that era it’s there to provide support between the body and the dress, and if you’re wondering, tightlacing was quite frowned upon. There’s plenty of KZbinrs on here that do a deep dive analysis on the history of stays and corsets, such as Abby Cox, BernadetteBanner, Karolina, etc.

Not necessarily. Most 1st class was loaded. The first class was the biggest gap. As pointed out some rooms were $4000. todays money. Some where 135,000. Lots of the rich people were literally just getting drunk smoking and fcking their mistress while wife was at home. It wasn't always as perfect as the movies make it seem. The classy gentleman in the movie that said "we're dressed in our best" really said that. But he was dressed in his best most the trip to impress the young lady he was cheating on his wide with. And his life recorded in magazines like a maury show with all his antics. Look up Benjamin Gugenheim. If you haven't lol. Then look at the richest man John Jacob Astor. His new younger wife he cheated on his first wife with, went on to be an old rich home wrecker sleeping with younger married men and paying them to leave their wives and kids lol. Rose's lil hoe seen wad more realistic lol

I am certain there are many crafty ways to make ones home look the part. As for society in public yes times are different but I’m sure one could find a club or create one for people with similar tastes.

Dress up for dinner etc have period music food drink etc, pretend like your back in time as if the ship was still a cruise across The Atlantic.

I used to wonder why there was such a wide range of first class cabin decor- with many rooms looking like crew cabins but being found in first class right off the grand staircase rooms. These simple cabins with the cheapest decor were for the man- and maidservants of the parlour suite passengers

First and Second Class shared the same kitchens. This just showed how much the White Star Line wanted to improve the conditions of second class passengers. Their meals were simply scaled down versions of first class. Just look at first and second class breakfast menus, very similar in content.

In case you were interested, the fish course on a first class dinner had just one option, as most first class people back then enjoyed fish. If you didn't like fish, what you would do is have it served, but just eat the vegetables around it. You were not obliged to eat everything on your plate, and it was custom especially for first class ladies to leave a lot of their food on the plate and not eat much

I kind of want a restaurant that is completely Titanic themed. The first class area you have to dress in black tie attire, and it is strictly enforced. The second class and third class the dress code is fitting for those sections of the restaurant. The food and drinks would be authentic to the menus so Titanic fans will get the full experience. Oh, and the decor would match each section of the ship. Good idea?

You could also have some tea or bouillon on deck as deck stewards would walk around with trays offering them to 1st and 2nd class passengers on Boat Deck and Promenade Deck. You could also request it by pressing a electric call button.

It was accommodations most 3rd class (and many 2nd class) passengers had never had access to like running water, electric lighting, flush toilets and the list goes on. What we consider standard living was 1st class back then. But, oh, those beautiful clothes! I feel pretty just looking at them...sigh...😊

@@yiman7370 second class also had wine served at dinner. Also, it’s about selection, 1000 bottles doesn’t sound like a lot if 50 people chose to drink 3 glasses of Pinot noir every night at dinner. Alcohol consumption was far greater for the average wealthy person than it is today. Even more so on a transatlantic voyage. Even now, a bottle of wine in the evening is quite standard for lots of adults in Switzerland or France.

Not only was wine reserved for 1st and 2nd class passengers remember that they only really drank wine at dinner in those days. Between meals if you wanted an alcoholic drink it was usually spirits; whisky or brandy and soda or gin and tonic. 3rd class passengers were only permitted beer even if they had the money to buy wine or spirits. It was thought that the lower classes couldn't be trusted with strong drink as it would lead to disorderly behaviour. Unlike their social superiors who could be trusted to drink themselves stupid, but stagger quietly off to bed like gentlemen 😂

Everyone leaves off the 4 piano players. There was an upright piano in third class- something not found on any other oceanliners - but there was no professional assigned to playing it. It was presumably played by passengers, as was the case at all times besides during dinner in Second class.

OF the 3 Luxury liners the White Star Line had built the Olympic was built first , then Titanic & Bittanic. They commissioned to compete with the already built luxurious and very fast sister ships Mauritania and Lusitania . The Olympic ‘s interiors are said to be identical to her sister Titanic. The Brittanic was struck by a torpedo and sank during the latter part of WW1 The same fate befell Lusitania near Ireland . The Olympic enjoyed a long life as did Mauritania. By the late 1930s Olympic was decommissioned and scrapped due to age she was edging towards 30 years old and larger newer ships had started to overtake her speed records.

Most luxurious ship in the world when new in 1912. However - only incrementally more luxurious than about a dozen other major ocean liners, German ones along with British and the French Line SS France (which arrived on its maiden voyage 10 days after the Titanic sank). I imagine dinner in first class was elegant and refined but not as opulent as shown in the movie. A fair number of people (especially those prone to seasickness) thought of an ocean voyage as an endurance test, not an opportunity to show off. Plus the “old money” passengers probably liked everything kind of subdued.

Titanic had massive modern refrigerators in their store areas and in the kitchens. This enabled them to keep fresh meat, fish, milk, ice cream, cream etc.

It was common back then for you not to eat every item on your plate. Also when ordering the kitchens didn't pack your plate high with food, portions were smaller and easy to eat. Also unlike now where we munch down our meals in fast time, they took their time to eat. People in first class could sit down to eat at 7pm and not be finished until 10pm.

In those days working class people only bathed once a week. They would have a daily strip wash at the sink. They didnt have plumbed in baths at home. I was born in 1963 and our home had no bathroom. We used a zinc bath in front of the fire. And our toilet was outside.
