A Co op Divi. A Portrait of the Barnsley British Co operative Society by Dave Cherry and John Irwin

The Barnsley film makers Dave Cherry and John Irwin take a look back at the Barnsley co-ops and interview some of the old employers.
A book tracing the history of the co-ops was given to Dave from Eric Barnes, an ex Barnsley man. This commemorates the 1903 coronation of King Edward V11 and Queen Alexandria and was given to all the 20,000 members.
John Irwin uses stunning computer graphics to transform the old buildings into their modern day locations.

Fantastic videos Mr Cherry, brings back a lot of memories from when I was a kid, my mother had a Coop divi, but she hasn't got anymore. I am from Worsbrough Bridge, "Park View", live in North Sheffield, not too far from Barnsley. Hope there are more videos to come.

I used to go to Ward Green Co-op for my Auntie's groceries every Saturday morning in about '61-'62 and I'm sure I was usually served by Linda. We always used the shops in Worsborough Bridge as my mother was from George Street. I was in your class at Ward Green when I was John.🙂

Blimey, I remember the Ward Green Co-op...we lived on the "Dunks's" and I went to Ward Green Primary. This is grand stuff, thanks so much and keep it going.

My brother used to live at Ward Green, I remember that big white pub opposite the Coop, can't remember what it was called, was only 7 or 8 in 72.

The pub was "The Manor" (or Manor House), my dad used to go there after the pigeon races on Saturdays to find out the results of the day's race.@@dukeofengland

Another wonderful video Dave, so many memories, I vaguely remember when Coop drapery was on Wellington Street back in the 80's. Also what I call Coop, Leo's, Pioneer, Market Fresh up where Quality Save is now, just a bit too young to remember it's hayday. I passed you in Worsbrough other day lol, I was on my mobility scooter with my little dog.

Yes the CO-OP number was etched in our brain. Ours was 102763 Our local co-op was up Darfield Road. They were the days to remember, also seeing the Co-op milkman pulling his cart full of milk, it must have killed him. Lovely Video again. I suppose you could do one of Parkie who was a Darfield Roader. God bless him.

THERE WAS A CO- OP ON CARLTON ROAD BARNSLEY WHEN I STAYED WITH MY GRANDMA AND GRANDAD RAWSONS ON RAVESFIELD DRIVE ALLUS WENT THERE COULD SEE THE CO- OP FROM MY GRANDMAS FRONT WINDOW I USE TO KNEEL ON SETEE WATCHING FOR LEETS GOING ARRT 12PM FOR THERE DINNER TIME AND GOING BACK ON AT 1 O'CLOCK ALLUS WENT SHOPPING THERE WITH ME GRANDMA
