Macomb is home to Western Illinois University, and that's basically all the town is known for. It's one of the only places within the state of Illinois that you have to drive for an hour before you reach an interstate highway.

I graduated from WIU & lived in Macomb from my Sophomore year till I graduated. Macomb is a good place to live & has great locals as long as you aren't the typical "College kid". It's a ghost town when WIU is in break which gives people the chance to see what Macomb & neighboring towns are really like. Loved my time there

To be honest, I think Macomb has huge potential, considering how cheap it is and what you get for the price. It has many things very few towns of 10-20k in Illinois have.

@@michigandersea3485 , very true! It has a best-in-state hospital that has won awards for its high-quality care and patient safety; all the cultural and educational opportunities that come from the university; excellent fiber internet available everywhere (that's unusual in a small town); three really beautiful large parks with recreational opportunities like hiking, boating, fishing, etc; and a great, very safe, community-oriented quality of life. It is a town with a lot to offer.

I felt that it was really boring, I also graduated from WIU and if you wanted to do anything other than get s**t faced at the Ritz or the Forum you were out of luck, just one sad little theatre with like 4 old movies. Only thing worth it in Macomb is Lips.

I am from Macomb and loved my childhood growing up there! It was such a great time in Macomb with WIU growing as a result of the baby boomers starting to college. I graduated from Western in 1978. There were 15,000 students there during that time. It was a HUGE party school. One more thing I would like to add, the area is actually very wealthy. Our farmland is some of the best in the world, so the networth of the farmers in that area is impressive, but you would never know it by the way they act and live! 😉💙

Illinois has some of the highest taxes on the farmers' land, highest sales and State Income Taxes, and one of the most corrupt state & local Govt. Cultures. A Governor goes to prison every 12-20 years, along with mayors, city managers, etc. If it wasn't for the Leathernecks of WIU, Macomb would look like any other "downstate" community.

Thanks for showcasing Macomb. I am a WIU alumni. I could tell there seemed to be quite a few changes in businesses since I was there last. Macomb really is a nice town. I haven't been to Macomb in 30 years, rather nice to see. But - more time devoted to a classic, historic Public Square was necessary, and more points of WIU could have been explained. We called it the Sherman Shuffle because Sherman hall was where you did your student business, and they would send you from room to room, no one knowing their job. Even the teachers would say they felt sorry for us. Sad because WIU really did have some awesome stuff but was over shadowed by the bad stuff. Even visiting comedians made fun of it. Ok, so Macomb has --a very low cost of living and low home prices. Seriously, you can pick up houses for $50k that you could move into. --decent schools, but not really outstanding --lower crime than the state average --thanks to the college it has more educated and hopefully more open-minded people than most affordable small towns --a train that gets you to Chicago in 3.5 hours. --fiber internet (unheard of in a town of 20,000 people) --about 20% of the permanent population is university faculty and their families What's not to like for remote workers with families who want to live somewhere peaceful and safe? You have to weigh the cost of living vs the amenities. Many other places have way more amenities and services, but they are almost always 1) higher crime or 2) much more costly to live in. Macomb has more culture than most towns its size in Illinois, and lower crime than many as well. Housing costs start at 3x higher in Chicagoland than in Macomb.

Even the 500 college professors and their families? That's probably like 20% or more of the permanent non-student population.

If you look at crime statistics and school statistics it does pretty well today, especially considering the very low cost of housing.

That was sad that campuses were closed, especially for elementary and high schools. Anthony Fauci needs a good dose of Nuremberg.

Too many cops they mess with anyone cheap rent thou 450 a month no jobs 1 job round the area smithfeild 45 min away

You have to understand just how amazing $450/month rent is in a town with a below average crime rate, and free buses... That is essentially tied for the lowest rent in the USA. Plus, if you do get a job, you get the high Illinois minimum wage.

It's not that bad but not that great either......The crazy thing is, a $75k home in Macomb that's 1/2 way decent looking will be $275k in Bozeman Montana pop 54K or $175k in Wallace Idaho pop 900 in remote area. About the plus is beautiful scenery.
