Hi Shaymus, thank you for all those hours of hard work you put in order to present us with the most amazing plethera of information! It truly is outstanding! Thank you for caring enough to dedicate your valuable time to us; especial as you are also busy with your job as an Animal Artist. Everything you have shown us, is most appreciated. I only got as far as my A level Art class in secondary school, but always felt disappointed throughout my time learning art. The reason for that was because from my GCE class, I was just foisted into my O-level class for 2 lessons, then foisted into my A-level class without being given the opportunity to learn the fundamental foundations of drawing or painting Art. I left school not understanding shading or blending or texturizing etc, it was a wasted education. The time I spent watching your video today, taught me so much more than ALL the Art lessons I had in school put together. I now know the correct tools and materials to purchase and a better understanding of the use of colour, light and creating shade and tone. I am very interested to knowhow you arrived at becoming an Animal Artist. I will definitely consider becoming a Patreon 👩🎨❤🧡💛💚💙💜🤎🖤🤍☺

Would you be able to do the second layer instead of with pastel pencils with normal colored pencils, like Polychromos, Carandache Luminance, or Prismacolor Premier? Or is there any difference so that this wouldnt work?
@shaymusart9 ай бұрын
I’m not sure if it would be as effective as the pastel pencils will blend with the first layer, the colour pencils won’t be able to blend. I think some artists do use colour pencils instead of pastel pencils though so I think it’s worth giving it a go if you would like to - I’ve not tried so I wouldn’t be able to give you my definitive answer sorry!

A more economical alternative to Pastelmat paper: I use Strathmore 184 lb ( 300 g/m ) mid toned paper. To give this paper some texture / tooth , I apply Liquitex clear gesso to the paper with a small, foam roller. It dries quickly and it doesn't cause any buckling of the paper. Try it.

Great video. I worked in soft pastel from 1970 -1993. I’m retired and returning to pastels and your video has helped me greatly. I used to use a velvet/velour type paper which I enjoyed but I don’t see any mention of this canvas. I’m ordering the sand style to give it a try. What are your thoughts on the velvet? I suppose it’s difficult to get detail with it. Thank you again.
@shaymusartАй бұрын
Thank you, I appreciate the kind feedback! I have used pastel Velour paper previously but I found that I wasn’t able to achieve the same sharpness that I can with PastelMat. I suppose it depends on your style of work, best thing to do would be to get a sample of both papers and see which you prefer best. It was many years before I used PastelMat because it’s expensive but I wouldn’t use any other paper now, I wish I started using it sooner 😊

Excellent informative video. I learned recently by seeing the lightfast sheet for Gioconda (sells set only but inexpensive) that their lightfastness is quite good compared with the Pitt pastel which to me as a pastelist was discouraging. Carbothellos are very pigmented and not too hard. Many are lightfast especially the greens but I was again very bummed that many blues and other surprising pigments were not lightfast. Of course you probably guessed that Caran’de ache lightfastness was the best all around and I use a knife to sharpen. So what did I do? You guessed it. I kept all the reasonably lightfast pencils and filled in the spaces with the other brands. The Pitt greens were not good as well as some blues, reds, pinks. Giocanda surprised me in general and I didn’t have to remove too many. Carbothellos filled in greens, but once again the blues were not great so the Caran’de ache filled in so many areas and they also increased their prices well over a $1 US. Hope the information helped.😊

@@shaymusart awesome! Because before too long we will be taking out mortgages against payments back to Caran’de ache. Your work is beautiful by the way. I combine watercolor with colored pencils or pastels or do them separately. I enjoy colored charcoal also. Nature is the best and always encourages me especially when I can’t get out for health reasons. We certainly need an intervention on treating our planet well as well as each other. Your videos are always lovely and I have enjoyed them. I didn’t get the powder pastels but for me using the tools on the sticks work well too. I was cheering for you when you first started and sharing your info with my art friends some of whom are artists in different medium. It is a pleasure to see great teaching and thank you for the times you probably wanted to pull out your hair. Thanks again!
