Strategy is, in quite a literal sense, the king of the genres. In fact, it's part of every game we play. In this video we chart the complete history of strategy gaming, from its humble begininings, to the boom period of the 90s, to its decline and eventual resurgence.

I would say proper fog of war is what Warcraft 2 introduced. Unexplored territory existed way before the 90s, not sure exactly how far back it goes but Beneath Apple Manor from 1978 is one example. Herzog Zwei is real-time strategy in a way and really good too but not the first game that can be described as such. The first proper one is Dune 2. HZ didn't have base building, resource gathering via units or scouting - it probably inspired Dawn of War or MOBAs instead.

Paradox strategy games like Europa Universalis IV, Stellaris, Hearts of Iron IV is where it is at today. Can't believe how you could miss those.

I had hoped theyd mention a game I once got to play a demo of but I forgot the name. It was space fleet with every admiral ship being commanded by a descendant of ww2 naval commanders and I believe the ships named after flag ships. I really liked that game but scarcely had a computer back then let alone money to by games. Civ2, and age of empires coming down to the ten dollar range was big for me. And finding lor2 at big lots kept me from selling drugs to feed my addiction. I was successful in getting my better off friend into aoe so he bought the sequel I could play it. I practically lived at his house

Dungeon Keeper 1 & 2 definitely deserve a mention the best Molyneux games. My first were Worms then Red Alert on my old Packard Bell Windows '95 and Populous at school's computer club, really got addicted age 12 with Civ2: Fantastic Worlds the Atlantis and Jules Verne scenarios were my favourite from that collection sadly i never had the Conflicts ib Civ disc but i did have 'the Orange Disc' somehow the Holyland scenario was just magic it was alive!; S.M.'s Alpha Centauri (with Alien Crossfire) are my favourite games of all time, i still play them along with Civ4BTS and Civ5BNW, usually the real world 2011 or 2014 scenario mods. Startopia and Zeus: Master of Olympus were pretty cool too.

What about LAN parties? AOE2, SC, and WC3 were ideal for it. Not to mention, the WC3 engine allowed players to create their own games like DOTA, GEM TD, and more.

Started loving strategy games playing Dune 2000 on the PlayStation 1. After a while I swapped to Shogun Total War and have been a massive strategy enthusiast ever since.

Dune 2 was my first RTS. I then got hooked on C&C Red Alert. After that, I discovered Starcraft as my all time favorite.
