Fair enough review Jonathan. I think Dylan has done such a great job at being mysterious, it's difficult to write a script about him. Also, apart from the drama about Dylan's music branching out into other genre's and "going electric" there wasn't much drama in Dylan's rise. He blew into NY and a few months later was signed to one of the biggest record labels in the world. Compare this to say Ray Charles scratching and fighting for years across different states and switching record labels, until he finally 'made it', all the while battling blindness, addiction, and racism. Dylan's second album pretty much launched him. I love Dylan, and I consider him a prophet, but regarding his rise, there just isn't a ton to work with for a screenwriter. I would've started the story with a scene Dylan described in "No Direction Home" of the boy Dylan discovering a record in his parents old mahogany turntable that he puts on and listens to. It's the old country ballad "Drifting Too Far From Shore", this is where and when the sound hits him, it's the moment he first became interested in music. Then i would've cut to when he was in high school, playing gigs, then eventually to his move to Minneapolis where he was enrolled at the University of Minnesota for a semester, staying up late listening to and playing along with Woody Guthrie's records, playing in Dinkytown where he played some of his first gigs outside of his home town. Then I would've shown Dylan hitchhiking to NYC and then go into his time there. This would've given the screenwriter more material and shown Dylan's evolution and maturation as a songwriter and a person.

As a Bob Dylan Stan I’m nervous to watch it but I’m expecting just an overall good movie… like you said he’s a very mysterious guy who we don’t really know well. He lives a very private life and chooses what to make public very carefully. What I am hoping the movie to be more about though is the phenomenon that is Bob Dylan and how he completely changed music and the world around him and less about him as a person, because the prior is a much more interesting story…

Based on what I've read about this movie, it is the former, so I'm actually looking forward to this. I have a feeling I will like it.

This is why I love the movie I’m Not There so much, since it is far less a movie that sets out to explore who Bob Dylan is as a person and is a movie that’s pretty unconventional, abstract, and leaves you with a bunch of questions, just like Dylan himself! Because of that I think that movie works so well if you want a movie about Bob Dylan and his career but it doesn’t succumb to the typical biopic trappings since it’s not trying to be a traditional biopic in the first place, and I really do recommend anyone who’s a Dylan head to check it out too. I am still optimistic for this new movie though, especially since I already know Timmy will knock it out of the park if anything

This movie was really good. The acting was good and it would be just outside my top 10 movies of the year. 11-14 range. 8.5/10.

I am a longtime hardcore Bob Dylan fan….so it is a good movie…does it capture the Dylan of that period on a personal level? Maybe not but I don’t know if anyone could in a dramatic portrayal. The best thing it does is depict the scope of his musical artistry of that period and it builds to a peak with the way it ends at the Newport Folk Fest of 1965. That said it leaves out a lot…probably out of necessity to fit it into a 2.20 hour movie…Its kind of a dramatic overview of this great artist for a 4 year period…Chalamet and all the actors are good . In the end if you want to see the real story I recommend the Scorcese Doc from 2005… No Direction Home and to see more of the period Inside Llewyn Davis!

Glad there are young Bob Dylan fans out there! I also felt "against" this film when I first heard about it, but I also felt a wave of excitement. However, I agree with you that Timothy probably does a pretty good job, but the structure will be generic. I think Dylan has done such a great job at being mysterious, it's difficult to write a script about him. JMO.

I think that this movie should be judged on what it’s trying to do. And that is to focus on the four pivotal years of Dylan’s career. Because Dylan rarely revealed himself, it’s silly to expect that that type of biographical movie.
