I enjoy a smoke on my commute to work and again on the way home. I've started gravitating towards smaller, lighter pipes as they really fit the bill for that purpose. Actually just picked up a 1930's era Kaywoodie because of its small but handsome shape as well as just to have something different. Pipe size and weight was definitely not on my radar when I first started but it sure enhances the enjoyment when you find what works for your given situation.

I've come to really enjoy smaller, featherweight pipes and yes, have grown my collection of them over the years. As I mentioned in the video, I like the French made Ropp's and Savinelli's "Piccolo" series, especially the Prince of Wales style. When I maintain a steady cadence, I can make a Flake tobacco last for 45 minutes to 1 hour. They make very good piping for "lunting" as well. Easily clenched. Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment, very much appreciated.

Great video. The last pipe that I purchased was my smallest one, a Savinelli 207. I love how it feels in the hand and after getting accustomed to the lighter weight, have grown to really love it. I just placed an order for some Simply Orange, and am excited to try it, especially since my 207 is from the 'Arancia' line and will be very fitting to smoke it in!

as i have... aged, i have developed a real fondness for smaller pipes. there are a couple i always seem to be reaching for. i have an old Orlik Dublin that i smoke perhaps too much, and a couple of 1970s Grabow pipes i'd have previously ignored as well. it's a lovely bunch of pipes you've shown us there, and with an appreciator's smile without the stench of snobbery. that may be the most admirable thing of all. i write this on the 21st of December and so wish you a merry Christmas, a tolerable Winter, and a happy New Year.

I love the idea of a smaller pipe for a nice 30 min smoke. I started pipe smoking again this year and I only have two pipes currently that I acquired 10 years ago and both are quite large (a basket pipe, which came as part of a starter kit and a Peterson system pipe that was an estate pipe). Both are great but I’ve reached a point where I’ve had experiences where I just wish my smoke had been 30mins rather than a 1 and half hour smoke. Although, I’m not complaining about the long smokes, I’ve had some very enjoyable evenings but experience has opened up my mind to the idea of one of these pipes - without realising they were a thing/option before. Thanks for the video and the suggestion, I think I’ll keep my eye out for a smaller pipe to add to my collection.

Heya Gary! Loved the tour of your tiny pipes 🤩 Some beautiful pieces. I too have a good number of smaller pipes that bring me joy. I wish Savinelli would make more of the 313 prince shape. I have a growing affinity for the smaller pipes these last few years myself. Really just for the time frame which you can enjoy a bowl in. I previously leaned towards large pipes, the largest I could find - I also was a free range indoor smoker. However, I stopped doing that when my wife became pregnant and it's hard to find a solid 1.5-2 hours as a new father. I found I was wasting a lot of tobacco filling up those large bowls that I couldn't finish. Smaller pipes really should be a consideration for anyone with a busy or demanding routine. I really enjoyed this video and your lightweight collection. Cheers man!

A nice group of pipes, Gary. I also like the prince shape, and have a Savinelli 313 that I enjoy and which does well with vaper flakes. @@oldandintheway1955 Gary, the Falcon dry rings are probably quite helpful for folks who experience an issue with moisture. They are very similar to pipe cleaner material, so they are pretty absorbent. But as far as trapping some of the nasties, I don't believe they do as well as activated charcoal does. It's a shame because I find much about the Falcons to be very positive. Anyway, hope you have a good reminder of the week and enjoy the weekend. - Jim

Gary, delayed response but I’m about to purchase a Ropp pipe as you have convinced me it would be a good quality option for a lighter pipe. I’m torn between a J22 and the J07, do you have a J07? If so what’s the size difference between that and the J22? Maybe an email is better than the comment section, not sure how to safely exchange emails though… anyways- appreciate any guidance! Cheers, Alex

@@DryFlyFisher11 Hi Alex, I have a J22 but not a J07. The J22 is slightly longer and has a slightly shorter, larger bowl. The J22 is very slightly lighter as well. There's not much difference really. To my eye the J22 is more streamlined. I hope you're very happy with your choice; I find Ropp pipes to be quite good for the money. I haven't done it yet; but I'll put my email contact info in the "about section" of my channel. YT does not like us putting our email address's directly into these responses.

I find myself drawn to both chunky walled, Custom-Bilt styled pots and bullcaps and smaller, lighter pipes. By happenstance, most of the Pipe by Lee pipes lean toward the latter. I didn’t really discover this until after I’d fallen into the rabbit hole of collecting them. When I look at old factory pipes like Lees, Kaywoodies, etc., most of them seem to be far more slender and elegant…with the glaring exception of the C-B bullcap/pot clones. Based on the number available on the estate market, the smaller pipes were more popular at one point. That, or nobody’s selling their chunks.

I was told by a friend in France, that older pipes also tended to be smaller owing to the roughness, scarcity and expense of the European tobaccos after the world wars. I searched the estate bins at the Chicago Pipe show last week and found precious few prince style pipes and none worth attempting to salvage. The smaller, more elegant pipes don't live as long in a rough and tumble world. Thanks for dropping by Ethan, always nice to hear from you my friend.

I am a smaller pipe fan! All below 50 grams and I don't get very big bowls. I don't mind packing another bowl if I want more. Those prince shapes you have are great. I used to have a castello natural vergin in that shape that was super small. That was a great dog walking pipe.

Great collection of smaller pipes. I’ve also been shifting that way for the past few years and just bought my first Rossi Piccolo slightly bent billiard (28 grams). They are the (somewhat) less dolled-up version of the Savinelli Petite. I don’t necessarily recommend such pipes to newcomers as they tend to have thinner walls and will heat up-especially with straight VAs. Also, I get much more than 30-45 minutes from my small pipes, but smoke flakes and don’t mind it going out occasionally. Be well.
@oldandintheway1955

Thank you. I agree with you that the smaller, lighter pipes could be a challenge, or a disappointment, to a new pipe smoker, owing to the thinner bowls. I typically do not smoke Virginia's in my featherweights for that reason. Your cadence is better than mine if you can get more than 45 minutes out of a Piccolo. Do you rub out the flakes? Glen (Dropbear Woodworks) mentioned that he enjoys a nice long smoke via a plug tobacco. That sounds like a plan to me. Thank you for stopping by! Enjoy your weekend, serene smokes.

@@oldandintheway1955 Far from a cadence pro, but 2 full hours last night in the piccolo with rubbed out VA flake-the bowl of that billiard is slightly larger than the prince. Again, I don’t mind letting it go out and cool off a few minutes regardless what pipe I’m smoking. Maybe 5 smokes now in the piccolo, but looking to build a small cake to help with heat. It’s difficult for me to get “fold and stuff” just right, but stumbled into a good one the other day. The piccolo did well and maybe stayed a tiny bit cooler.

Good video Gary, I have gravitated towards smaller pipes in the last couple yrs. I often don’t want or have time for an hour or more smoke and even though I don’t mind coming back and relighting, even after many hrs or overnight, the lightness and portability are really a bonus. What are those little cups your pipes sit in on your pipe stand? I bought a poorly made stand on Etsy that needs some redesign work, it’s solid oak but the pipe rests are too shallow and the pipes are constantly falling over. Those look like they might be my answer. Lance

Hi Lance, Thank you for stopping by, much appreciated. I designed and crafted that pipe stand this last winter. I used silicone suction cups (Amazon) as the base. I drilled a pilot hole and lightly press fit the stem of the cup into the wood. They work really well and conform to the shape of each pipe. I hope this helps. Take Care and serene smokes my friend.

Thank you for watching and commenting, Carolina, much appreciated. For me, featherweight pipes are a joy to smoke, so light and clenchable. I do find that I need to be mindful of cadence when I smoke straight Virginia and Virginia forward blends. If I can maintain a nice cool smoke in my smaller, lighter pipes; I'm doing it right 😉. As it happens, I really enjoy strong tobaccos like Lakelands i.e. Ga with Hoggarth's Dark Flake A, Black Irish Twist and Condor, to name a few. A smaller pipe is perfect for those robust, full bodied tobaccos Serene Smokes, Gary
