The Color of Compromise by Dr. Jemar Tisby and The Color of Law by Richard Rothstein are great reads to address history.

Thanks Pastor Todd and Jimmy. "We" as a church needs to do a better job at embracing diversity and inclusion. Diversity means to invite me to your party- Inclusion means to ask me to dance, too! Some people will invite you- but ignore you while you're there!

But who are you specifically referring to Sharon? When you say "the church" what that does is put everybody- even those who are well past the problems listed in this discussion- into a single category. All condemned. Unwilling to embrace diversity and inclusion. That is just not true. My MANY decades in the church has shown both races need work in some members. It is not "the church" that is failing but members on both sides that are not moving forward. If the problem is not defined perfectly the solution is not possible. The issues with race are so 'broad and varied' that a discussion that paints everyone in one camp with the same broad brush becomes part of the problem. I wish the discussion included more voices and not just 2 of the many in one exchange here.

@Larry Willard hi Larry, and thank you for your feedback. I respect your point of view. First, I pray that those who have yet to embrace diversity and inclusion do not believe they're condemned simply because that isn't true. Secondly, "We" all are part of one body (The Church), although we have many members. And, I agree, and it's obvious "We" all need work - those who do and those who think they don't. Lastly, it's not until "each individual member" of the Body takes responsibility and accountability for their own dysfunction in this particular area AND correct it- it remains a bodily infection. May Grace and Peace Be your portion, my brother in Christ!

@@REED6420 Hi Sharon, I attended an inner city black church in Toronto for 35 years that was over 2,000 people and 85% were black- mostly west indies folk, and I saw very little of the type of tension that exists here in the USA especially in the south. My points were meant to suggest that "if" a real dialogue is to happen it must be two-way and not a lecture about the failures of one side or the other. I never hear dialogue but a lot of monologue disguised as discussion. The debates this past few years between a few groups seem to be aimed at trying to force white people to see that they are flawed, guilty and ignorant of their state. I am the most inclusionary and fully accept diversity of every kind. My grandmother was Metis. So I am sensitive to the various kinds of bias among people groups but they are not all racist. But that seems to be the pointed finger in a lot discussions I see here. For all of us who also have black family members this approach to "suggesting self-examination" so you can see your blind spots is highly inflammatory, insulting and most definitely inaccurate. Like Jimmy and Todd I also have a Master of Divinity degree from the largest seminary in Canada so I do know the Bible every well. And there are few people who do not take responsibility for being open-eyed on racism from a Biblical perspective. Suggesting other views are just a blind infection is equally racist. If there ever is a real dialogue on the issue- that is two sided- and not a monologue of white confession- I think there really is a chance to improve relations among the races. But I do not see it. I love what Candice Owen says about the issues. I wish more people would go to her site and take a peak. Yes there is work to do. But it is two-sided. Only my opinion of course. Blessings to you always.
