In a wide-ranging conversation moderated by American philanthropist David M. Rubenstein, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of The Carlyle Group, Eric Foner covers his substantial scholarship on the Civil War, slavery, and 19th-century America.

Eric and David were great conversationalists. Loved what Eric said about Mary Lincoln. Smart and skilled at politics. A nice tonic to all the awful attsvls on her vs yrt

I will contine my comment..A nice tonic to all the negativity about her(Mary Lincoln) Also liked to hear about the Lincoln Douglas debates . Thanks for the great stories

Very very good...however David usually doesn't feel the need to jump in so often as he does in this interview, especially with such an engaging, informative, and interesting person as Eric.

Lincoln was the first "to meet with black people in the White House, other than as slaves..." is this true? Hadn't Adams met with a delegation from free S Domingue (Haiti) about lowering trade restrictions and, tentatively, about recognition?
