U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor visited Brown University on Wednesday, Feb. 7, for an open-to-the-public conversation moderated by Brown President Christina Paxson. The U.S. Supreme Court justice engaged with students on a wide range of topics, offering an up-close look at her life and career. Sotomayor’s visit came 18 months after Brown’s incoming Class of 2020 students explored her journey from a Bronx housing project to her appointment as the first Hispanic and third woman on the nation’s highest court. Her “My Beloved World” memoir served as the text for the University’s First Readings program in 2016.

What an absolute honor and joy it was to hear Justice Sotomayor speak & to see her interaction with the audience. I enjoyed hearing her not just for the content of her speech, but also for the sophisticated, intelligent manner in which she speaks. Her voice & tone have a maternal quality. I've learned from what she said, I enjoyed her marvellous sense of humor & am proud that she is an inspiration for others. I hope she stays a justice for a very long time & continues to do the good work she is doing.

Justice Sotomayar is the type of human being you just love to hear talk. What a wise and wonderful woman she is. So full of love and compassion for her fellow citizens of this earth. How fortunate we are to be living in the same time period that she is.

I love listening to all justices from Scalia, to Breyer, to Bader-Ginsburg, to Gorsuch, to Sotomayor, and now Coney-Barett. The wisdom and judicial knowledge they have is truly above partisan politics, and all humble, too! The only justice I find unfit for the role is Kavanaugh. Listening to his confirmation hearing and interviews is like listening to an arrogant college fraternity jock. Reading his decisions, especially next to other justices' writings especially the conservative ones, makes his look like a high school english essay! No wonder only Gorsuch joins him in writing his opinions. Most of the time, he joins someone else or writes opinions by himself 🤣

great and insightful interview. P.S next time please do not mute sounds when speakers are not talking, this change in audio is noticeable and annoying :(

Advisers have failed most students by just passing them on and not taking time to really prepare students in their selected studies and not just allow students or placing students themselves, the adviser, in classes that are a waist of time and money for the students.

"We don't permit you to scream fire in a crowded theater" This famous quote comes from Oliver Wendel Holmes in a decision in which he used it to justify restriction on people speaking out against WW 1. I am immediately suspect of anyone who uses this quote to justify their pet restrictions on speech.

She answers the question "how do we listen strategically" at minute 24:41, in the most rambling nonsensical manner with all the buzz words of inclusion, transparency and then basically says "you have to force people to listen to each other, and force (them) to speak in ways that recognize..." WOW... right that sounds STRATEGIC. Not the greatest intellect I have ever heard and the forced sense of high mindedness is disturbing.

I went to Brown Affirmative action might have helped me but I was also number 1 in my high school class Every latino I met at Brown was also ranked 1 or 2 in their class We worked harder than most others to get there We had to learn the language and then we had to dominate it.
