I was drilling and tapping some mild steel the other day. Came from my usual supplier, but it was like working on a poor casting with sand in the first 2 or 3 millimetres, I was worried I might break my taps (4mm). I gave up and found another piece that was fine.

May I suggest that the reason the steel packer was so hard when tapping was because when you quenched it a few times to cool it off during the sanding process, you must have inadvertently hardened it!

No as it is only mild steel which doesn't harden just by heating it.

Hi Keith, I'm quite new to model engineering and building my first Stuart 10V. Your video's are a great educational resource to newbie's like me. If you fit feed water pump to an engine, then how is the water level in the boiler controlled, so it doesn't overfill or underfill over time? Regards Paul

With a water bypass valve that either returns water to the tank when open or to the boiler when closed - please watch some more of my videos . . . . .

Hi Keith, As usual an awesome work ! Quite nice ! Thanks for sharing it. Regards PS : I've got a casting kit of a single piston engine, and I assume I overestimated my skills. So I did not machined anything of this kit. I wish I could 'see' with you what is possible about this kit. Are you interested in ?

how would you deal with snapped drill bit/threading tool?
@keithappleton7 жыл бұрын
With great difficulty, often impossible to remove the broken piece in the home workshop.

Easier to start again?

When you said there was a nut in the way I was hoping and thinking you would make a small joke about yourself
