Nothing in Philosophy has stumped me as much as differentiating the concepts of deductive and inductive logic. Turns out that everything I have read and heard was terribly delivered, as this was very easy to understand. Thank you! It's amazing how large a role an instructor plays in the success of understanding.

The study of logic is hard and the teaching of logic is even harder. Unless one is a brilliant teacher one should not try to teach logic. What I have found most challenging is the conditional.

HANDS DOWN THE BEST INTERPRETATION ON THE SUBJECT. YOU SPOKE A LANGUAGE THAT I CAN UNDERSTAND AND EXPLAINED IT IN A WAY THAT MADE IT EASY TO COMPREHEND. THANK YOU

I cannot begin to describe how helpful and comprehensible your videos are. I see that you haven't uploaded one in 5 years. That's a shame, because this channel would become my own personal lecturer within any given field, considering how refined your teaching skills are. Thank you, thank you so much. I will share as much as I can.

So, if I've understood this correctly : a deductive argument is always true if the premises are true, but an inductive argument is only true if the induction is completed ? Great series.

The conclusion of a deductively VALID argument with true premises CANNOT be false.
@southerncuban5845
@southerncuban5845 4 жыл бұрын
"a deductive argument is always true if the premises are true" Not necessarily, it is the relationship between the true premises that makes it true. I can say, "All humans have a brain" (true) "Peter has a brain" (true) therefore Peter is human (not necessarily, he could be a fish ). As Elizabeth Meny said, it must be " deductively VALID." In my previous example, the main premise states that "all humans have a brain," but not that everything with a brain is human. Only when the minor premise is contained and defined by the main premise we can say there is an exclusive relationship between the main and minor premises (e.g., all humans have a brain, peter is human, therefore peter has a brain). In this case, the minor premise B. "peter is human" is limited and defined by the main premise A. (all humans have brains) then you transfer those properties from A (humans) to B. (Peter).

Hi 14dicken! I would add one key point to your comment. Deductive arguments are "supposed to be" such that the conclusion is always true if the premises are true. There are such things as failures/incorrect deductions. The same point holds for inductions. See my next lesson for more detail. Otherwise you are on the right track.
@elizabethmeny9204

A deductively VALID is always true if the premises are true. Validity is related to the structure and form of the argument.

I know, I studied formal logic many years ago and it bothers me how most college students in American cannot identify and expose fallacies like "you are a man you cannot talk about women issues" "you are White, you cannot talk about immigration" "you are not an expert you cannot talk about this topic." All Ad Hominem fallacies that are easily destroyed with logic.
