@@johnliberty3647 I agree 100%. It was all so incredibly well researched, informative... When FOX got the NFL rights in 1993 and started carrying the NFC they went overboard trying to turn it into some kind of cartoonish comedy Nowadays I dont even watch the pregame. just the games. Both networks overdo it with the contrived skits and too much forced pop culture nonsense

History should be something we all cherish, that what has preceded us has both meaning to our lives today and for those whom we had it to in future. I remember this anticlimax, but despite my team losing the game, it should be regarded in the same way as witnessing an F1 driver finishing the race - in the pit lane (as Michael Schumacher did in the 1998 Silverstone UK Grand Prix). Randall Cunningham was a beautiful gift. He was an innovator at QB. He paved the way for today's modern running/passing hybrid. He was underrated. He did not receive his proper recognition because he came to Philadelphia from the west (UNLV). So much talent, but unfortunately his skills were not fully developed. He was ahead of the era. What is oft overlooked is his arm strength, the ability to throw down-field 75-80 yds. At QB you can witness how easy and fluid his skill level . He was truly on another level out on the football field. He was a joy to watch play QB in the NFL.

As an Eagles fan now 48, I really feel your dad's loss. My dad and I would sit there and watch the Eagles together when they had Jaworski and Cunningham, some of my best bonding memories with him. Eagles had some awesome regular-season moments in those days but would always screw it up in the playoffs. I almost bought playoff tickets for a game in 1996 for him and me, but then I knew he would be upset at me for spending so much money. (The Eagles were underdogs at home against Detroit but blew them out 55-25). And then ... a few weeks later out of nowhere my dad gets terminal brain cancer and is dead in eight weeks. Man how I wish I bought those tickets for him and me, one last father-son memory. And I was so touched by the Giants fans on KZbin (father and son) cheering for the Eagles against Tom Brady back in 2017 or so. It was more about cheering against Brady, which I excitedly did when the Giants played him twice with Manning. Never before and never since (and probably never again) did I cheer hard for the Giants to win than in those two games. I was so happy when they won!!!

Back to the ruling though, it appears as if the ball did NOT go past the line of scrimmage following the block; since it appears to have been batted back behind the line and picked up behind said line, technically speaking, the Eagles could have advanced it. They wouldn't have been able to do so if the ball was blocked but past the line unless the Giants touched it first (Leon Lett 1993 Thanksgiving Day game). I think my analysis of this is correct but I am not 100% sure. EDIT: The ball appears to be at the 14 yard line (hence Pat Summerall calling it a 31 yard attempt) and the Eagles player got it between the 14.5 and 15 so yeah, the kick was blocked and the ball went into the backfield and the Eagles player was well in his right to try to advance it.

@@joe_zeay If a kick is blocked and it doesn't advance past the line of scrimmage, the offense can still attempt to advance it. What's funny is the NFC East now is just as competitive as it was in the 1980s and 1990s. It's just that this year instead of every team being good, the division is close because every team is bad. 😂
@derpmcgerp8062
@derpmcgerp8062 3 жыл бұрын
@Mike Russo that is very true. The Eagles aren't as bad as their record. They are a very well-rounded and competitive team when they're healthy. The years following their Super Bowl run, they've dealt with critical injuries each year and yet still managed to stay competitive, which is a testament to their will and heart. As a Browns fan, I have to agree with you. The Eagles put up much more of a fight against the Ravens and Steelers than my team, and not to mention they actually beat the 49ers, where-as teams like the Rams and Patriots got beat up by the same 49ers since (granted, Jimmy G was injuries and couldn't play the Eagles, but still, Eagles wouldn't have gotten crushed 33-6). Same as last year. The Eagles started off 5-7 and won 4 straight games to win their division with practice squad players, which was in my opinion one of Carson Wentz's finest moments. A lot of people like to look at the stats and claim the Cowboys were better last year, but don't seem to consider their record against common opponents. While the Cowboys lost to the Jets, Bills, Bears, and Packers, the Eagles actually beat all 4 of those teams, and of course beat the Cowboys Week 16 when it mattered. THAT BEING SAID, this year it's not JUST injuries. They CAN turn it around and have a winning record, but for now they are losing. They are still playing badly in quite a few ways. Although injuries are a part of it, the chemistry and consistency has simply not been the same. Yes, they did play hard against good opponents, but they also tied with the Bengals and played very sloppy against the Giants (I'm not gonna count the Washington loss just because Week 1 was pretty much Preseason). Carson Wentz, the RB room, a few skill players, and the front 7 have been holding the team together. I liked Doug Pederson as the HC for the first few years, but honestly ever since Frank Reich left the play-calling has just not been as good. If it wasn't for Carson Wentz pulling hat tricks, Doug's overanalyzing and play-calling would've lost the Eagles so many games.

@Mike Russo and by the way, my comment was just a joke. It is a fact that every team in the NFC East currently has a losing record. It's always fun, as an Eagles fan, to go back in time and hear every announcer take the side of our opposition. First Madden says the ball can be advanced because it was kicked on 3rd down, then both he and Summerall agree that Parcells was right, the ball can't be advanced and the game should go on. Then when the ref calls the play...the tenor of conversation becomes defeated. Guys, the Giants lost, not the announcers. lol

The amount of close endings between philly and new york in history is unbelievable (Btw there could be more than this) There was the blocked FG for a TD this game, there was the strahan pick 6, there was the unexpected fumble by the giants for an eagles TD, there was the eagles comeback/DeSean Jackson punt return TD, there was the Jake Elliot 61 yard FG, then the next year another gamewinning FG by Elliot, there was last years Zach Ertz TD in OT... then last night was Boston Scott's TD The rivalry is real, even tho this years division should be deleted lmao

Watching older NFL games, I just think of how guys like Randall Cunningham would've benefitted from these much more QB friendly rules of today. It's easy to say they were done a disservice with all the things defenses were allowed to do, but he still won a version of the MVP award twice (Pro Football Writers 1990, Newspaper Enterprise Associates 1998) and was a 3x Bert Bell award winner (writers Player of the Year). I just wish the offenses of the late 80s, 90s, and early 2000s were more willing to cater to the skill sets of the dual purpose QB. What's the point of drafting a guy like Heath Shuler, who ran a wishbone offense from middle school, if you're never going to allow him to use his legs? It was maddening...and all that coded stuff about Black QB's not being cerebral enough...Christ, they weren't developed by the white coaches at the high school and college level that just wanted them running to help them win games. Mike Vick, Kordell Stewart, etc...never truly utilized properly. Even Steve McNair in that deliberate, grinding offense Mike Heimerdinger ran in Tennessee didn't get to do what he had done at Alcorn State. The one year they turned him loose, he won the damn MVP in 2003.

The problem was that Buddy Ryan didn't care about offense. Buddy's 'expertise' was defense and that's all he cared about. He famously told Randall "Go make 2 or 3 plays a game and we'll win".

Cunningham was an absolute phenom. Loved watching him play. He could scramble and buy time as well as Staubach and Tarkenton, he could drop back and throw, and he could just outright take off and run. It was rare to see someone who had that kind of skillset at such a high level. Yea we'd seen qb's that could run before but they usually either had popgun arms, or were generally inaccurate throwers, or small and not likely to hold up to NFL brutality. btw both the Giants and the Eagles need to go back to these uniforms. This look gives the Giants their personality back

One would have thought that the Cardinals would have been in the Central and the Bucs in the East. St. Louis and Chicago are regional sports rivals, and even after the Cards move to Phoenix, it's still pretty "Central", while Tampa is East in geography. Granted, the Cowboys always in the East will never make sense geographically, but I do get that it's done for rivalry reasons.
