By that saying, if you were to be stuck in a dark maze, you'd very much prefer to be alone, rather than be trapped in there with a serial killer or monster or whatever. Like that one time when you were a child, trying to sleep during a thunderstorm at night, hearing strange noises from the kitchen or basement, and hoping that it's just things falling over and not some spooky Boogeyman. Or it could be taken into a metaphorical sense, like whether or not we humans are the only living beings in the universe, or there's something else out there, and people would wish to be alone rather than deal with a hostile alien race. I'm no English teacher or philosopher, but you should get the idea.
