Probably the most unique D-Day level in gaming from Call of Duty 2 Big Red One.

I like how the story spans through almost the entirety of America's involvement in the Western Theater, and the equipment changes with time and country. The Vichy French appears in ONE mission, yet use French weapons. The tanks go from M3 Stuarts to M4 Shermans. And we don't see the StG44 till D-Day in 1944. VANGUARD HAS NO EXCUSE.

Fun fact, when you’re character is knocked out and you hear a man say “There’s two kinds of people who are staying on this beach. The dead and those who are going to die! Now get moving!” That’s actually supposed to be George A. Taylor who arrived on Omaha Beach beach in a later wave, about 0800. A colonel at the time, he was still the regimental commander for the 16th Infantry Regiment of the 1st Infantry Division, which took many casualties in the initial assault. He found the remnants of his exhausted and shell-shocked men pinned down along the seawall. He was able to motivate, organize and lead the attack inland. His actual famous quote from Omaha Beach: "There are two kinds of people who are staying on this beach: those who are dead and those who are going to die. Now let’s get the hell out of here."

It's a real embarrassing state of affairs. My guess is that limited hardware might have forced developers to think hard about what drives the atmosphere of each level and cut out the unnecessary. Today's developers seems to be stuck mesmerizing their detailed artistic creations without any care for history. This earlier Era of gaming was also a special time when the industry wanted to earn the respect of the mainstream public. imo made games with serious intent to sway opinion that video games can show history in a new way.

Melodramatism is indeed for the journos back home, but during the less fierce parts of combat (as in, most of it) it's nice to crack a few edgy jokes to relieve the tension of getting shot at or walking on IEDs. I remember one guy that used to do jumping jacks when drawing fire (when you peek out so the enemy focuses on you and wastes ammo at distances where he can't really hit you effectively) in a firefight in Afghanistan. Still, I very much doubt the guys at Omaha (or most battles portrayed in games) would be in a much laughing mood.

Call of duty 2s version of d-day at pointe du Hoc was pretty spot on. There was even a real life 2nd Ranger named McClosky, tho the one in CoD2 was portrayed completely different from the real one but nonetheless, CoD2 and Big Red One are by far my favorites and the most accurate IMO. I’ve read several books about the 2nd Rangers on D-day and afterwards and they are near similar in every aspect. Big Red One here is the same way and I love the accuracy in this one too. I would really love it if they would release these again but as completely remastered in today’s graphics. That would be something to see.

At the Pointe, the Rangers didn’t have to cross 300 yards of beach like at Omaha but instead had to climb cliffs 90-100 feet high while at the same time being machine gunned, hand grenades tossed at and artillery shells rigged to explode on the sides of the cliff as they attempted to scale the cliffs from Germans at the top looking straight down at them. I believe Omaha tho was far worse tho bc of the over 300 years of open beach with no cover but the tank obstacles the rangers and 29th had to cross under the machine gun, mortar and artillery fire at near point blank range virtually annihilated Company A of the 116th of the 29th division without being able to fire a shot.

@@speedking7224honestly i never got why people seemed to be so moved by the characters in this game, for me that was the one thing that they failed to achieve. By that I mean actually meaningfull character development/character arcs. I always felt that it was very copy-pastey, after few minutes i was like "ok they do band of brothers thing here", but never felt remotely connected. It also was too predictable. And actually for me the reason for all this is in my opinion very little exposition. I hate exposition when there is no need for one, but i wouldn't mind at all, giving those chaps a few more words to speak, and maybe addind some more "boring" elements to the missions to elevate the "IT'S A WAR!" elements that would proceed them. But here we barely here few lines in the middle of conversation and BAM typical CoD flow of hundrets of enemies, no real feeling of dread or exhaustion that was so well captured by brother in arms series. And (segway...) all that was done right in Brother in Arms games - probably the only reason to play them because otherwise it's core gameplay idea is so simple that it gets instantly boring, and because whole gameplay is build around it, so does other parts of the game. All that being said, maybe i just don't get it, sometimes something just don't resonates with me, and otherwise i trully admire CoD2:BRO, and i often return to it - still in my opinion one of the very best cod's campaigns.

This is back when Call of Duty could have become a competitive tactical shooter and a potential rival to Counter-Strike. It all went downhill starting from COD4 onwards when sprinting and health regeneration was introduced. Even the devs weren't afraid back then to show the German swastika because it's a *damn historical game*.
@drg5352
@drg5352 2 жыл бұрын
Sprinting and health regeneration started in Call of Duty 2 (PC), not 4. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aqvCeXWKh6epiqc It also started the bad mechanic of infinite spawning enemies until you hit the next node on the map, and began the decline of MP maps from the great CoD1/UO affairs to increasingly tiny and poorly laid out ones, to the point of the broom closet sized maps you get today. It is still a solid game though, and vastly superior to WWII and WaW, much less the malware infested Vanguard. If I ever won a big lottery (500+m after taxes), I'd probably consider financing a game with just the intent of recreating the superior CoD1/UO MP gameplay. Probably would just build a castle, and buy a shit load of old cars and restore them/drive them instead, but I'd consider it. There's no good modern WWII shooter out there with that same quality of play though. Enlisted is too much grind and way too many pay to win perks like being invulnerable. Yes, I have shot guys a dozen times point blank with no cover, saw the blood spatter, and saw a shield graphic pop up, meaning that they had some form of invincibility granted in game. Not to mention the constantly being shot through multiple walls. I have seriously been shot through a bunker wall, with the shooter being a tiny dot a couple thousand meters away. It's still vastly better than CoD WaW, WWII, and Vanguard. Post Scriptum has a terrible graphical effect when slightly hurt that gives out migraines, making it unplayable, and Hell Let Loose is more a sim, with gargantuan maps that you can wander for an hour and never see anyone. CoD Vanguard is malware infested and hacks webcams so they can film children for child porn.

I would happily pay £60 for a remaster of this and CoD2. Not even for the multilayer, just for the campaign. I'll never forget the feeling of fighting in stalingrad in CoD2 or following your unit throughout the majority of the North African, Sicilian, and European campaigns right up to Germany. If anything it just proves modern games aren't even trying, they know people will buy it 🤷‍♂️

I completely agree, just give it a quick minor graphical update and tweak the controls a bit, then finally port it to the pc. That's it, nothing else, not a remake, a remaster, I don't want any of the modern day people responsible for the mess that is WW2 or Vanguard anywhere near it.

This and COD 3 would be amazing remastered. I'm only 24 but I mean it when I say kids these days don't know what they're missing but those of us who grew up with a PS2 or original Xbox know. I used to play this, Battlefront 2, GTA San Andreas, and Destroy All Humans 2 constantly.

I remember being 11 years old, wrapping up in a blanket and lying on the living room floor during winter break playing this game for hours. I remember always trading the guns you start out with for new ones at some point during each mission, just because. I never cared for the Thompson as a kid. My favorite gun was the MP40, half the time my end of mission loadout was the MP40 and the Kar98. I can still hear the click-click-click-click of the bolt action on that sniper rifle. Each level was so varied and detail oriented, there were several guns that could only be found on one or two missions. Each mission was a beautiful set piece and you grew to love the guys on your squad, which made it even sadder as you see them die in the course of war. I love how the loading screens for each mission showed your journey pushing thru the African campaign, then Sicily, and eventually right into Germany. My grandpa bought this game as a gift for me, my introduction to the Call of Duty series and one of the best video games I've ever been gifted. This and COD 3 are classic examples of the WW2 shooter Renaissance we had in the 2000s. The next Ps3/360 era of Call of Duty was great in its own way but those of us who were there for the PS2 games know that nothing could touch them. After black ops 2 tho, cod just wasn't the same anymore. Modern Warfare 2019 was good for a while but eventually they just invested all time, energy, and money into micro transactions and the stupid ass battle royale mode and threw multiplayer in the trash. Typical of game devs these days, follow the money instead of the fun. At least you still buy a PS2 or original Xbox for dirt cheap and play these old games with no worry about an update ruining the whole experience.

The hint is in the title: The Big Red One (named after the First Infantry Division) was a movie in 1980 that has one of the more well known depictions of Omaha Beach prior to Saving Private Ryan. The game and the movie both depict a lot of the same events from the war, though that’s understandable. At least this specific mission was largely original.

I loved the story to this game! I remember being very sad when I watched my squad mates get killed in action, and actually not liking Smith at first because he was a replacement (ended up liking him as the game went on). Also makes it even better that most of the voice actors in this game were actors from Band Of Brothers. This game definitely needs a remake!

Looking back at the 2000s WWII game series, I feel that the games from 2010 to the actual days, are missing something. From the campaing story, to the gameplay. I don't know what it is exactly, but the only obe who came close nowadays were the BF5 series. I don't know if it's becoming hard these days to describe WWII ambience, since many vets have already passed away, or if the old game studios are just becoming lazy and trying to only care about Multiplayer gameplay, using the same pattern.

Well back then there campaigns were always spot on when it came to story and the atmosphere surrounding it but however most older games like Call Of Duty and Medal of honor lacked a Proper Multiplayer. But yes roles have reversed. Nowadays there's alot of people out there would rather battle PVP then regular A.Is.

To me, the biggest hurdles for AAA studios in terms of making authentic WW2 games is the massive amount of monetization of cosmetics as well as the perceived need for customization. Ever since Fortnite showed that kids will run up hundreds of dollars worth of purchases on their parents credit cards if you include cool looking skins and camos, devs have felt the need to cram over-the-top skins and camos into every game regardless of whether it will detract from the setting or not. On top of that, since CoD 4, every FPS game has allowed for more and more weapon and class customization, so devs feel as though they need to give every weapon 80,000 attachment combinations to satisfy people, regardless of whether it fits the setting or not. When you add all of that on top of the fact that devs feel as though they need to add representation (which I agree serves a purpose, but should be done mindfully instead of lazily) encouraging them to let you play as Black female nazis and now every AAA representation of WW2 has turned into an alternate history steampunk rendition of the conflict. If you want to incorporate representation in WW2, let us play as a female Soviet sniper avenging her family being slaughtered or her rape at the hands of Germans, or as a Black infantryman fighting in a segregated battalion and tell us the story of how they returned to America just to be treated as second class citizens in-spite of serving their country, or an Indian Gurkha who had a similar experience to the Black Americans. Those would be historically accurate renditions as well as actually MEANINGFUL and ENLIGHTENING for audiences to interact with, but of course it would require too much effort.

Gotta love this game. Are you planning to play Finest Hours again? Oh, and here are some nerdy details about Finest Hours. - You can see the striker/firing pin slam forward on bolt action rifles (Very clearly seen after getting hit by an explosion, as you enter slow mo). - DP 27's (Or 28?) pan magazine's top cover does rotate when you fire the weapon. - You can tell allies to move by pushing them or get close enough to them and pressing the action button. - The crew of enemy tanks will bail out if the tank is disabled. You can shoot a disabled tank and complete kill it, and there will be no crew coming out of the wrecked tank. - There is a "Cheat" menu in the Extras. If you turn on the "Ricochet" option, bullets will ricochet off of almost any surface. You can do trick shots if you want. And it looks pretty if you mount an MG-42 or other mountable weapons.
