A Dance with Rogues is one of my greatest loves, truly I love this mod and all its faults! all the characters and narrative are so well made, as a woman I really felt seen when I played this, it's definitely not for all people but not everything needs to appeal to a majority. edit* adwr borrows many well-loved throps from the dark romance community, you can find a lot of these fetish elements in romance books such as A Court of Thorns and Roses, From Blood and Ash, Bow Before the Elf Queen etc. I can understand why people might be confused by some of these dark and se*ual aspects, and why a woman would want them in her game. But I can assure you there is a very big audience of women who loves these stories, and to see that represented in a game modual so well made and old is such an amazing experience. Not to mention the wonderful character journey the princess go on, I love how there are so many personalities you can adopt to your princess, making each playthrough feel just a little different than the last.

@notalefty9992 жыл бұрын
@@jeck988 If you are interested in this story specifically, its a very well done user made module. I would advise the 2nd instalment is a significant step down from this and doesnt reach a satisfying conclusion. If you want to get into neverwinter nights for gameplay more than story, the Aielund Saga is a very complete series that spans nearly the full level range, and isnt at all restrictive about what kind of character you have to play. The narrative and world building are competent, but its not on a par with ADWR (the 1st module at least). Whatever you do, dont play the original bioware made campaign. The expansion campaigns definitely were better, but the original campaign set an unbelievably low bar (particularly given this same studio had only recently made the BG series), so thats not saying much. NWN2 was made by Obsidian, and the main campaign isnt amazing, but its fine. The Mask of the Betrayer expansion, however, is really fantastic from a story perspective.

I hope this takes off. Discovered a Dance with Rogues a few years back and was blown away by how *competent* it was. The scripting is seriously complex, the logic behind XP gain really encourages playing a rogue, and the story, despite large amounts of horni, is honestly pretty engrossing and full of fun characters. You can tell the author was inspired by A Song of Ice and Fire, and put that inspiration to good use.

31:00 Yes! Yesyesyesyes yes YES! This is so important and I'm so glad you brought it up! I've often heard people criticize some RPGs for failing to have "real" choices. Bringing up how you have a bunch of different options for what to say but all leading to the same conclusion. What does it matter, they say, whether you respond to someone with active interest, neutrality, disinterest or hostility if the conversation concludes the same way? And the answer is exactly what you described, because it changes how you the player feels about the conversation and situation! Just because a choice doesn't change what ending you get, or cause mechanical changes, doesn't make it not a real or valid choice.
@Silverhawk1002 жыл бұрын
When done badly, you can feel the railroading, but when done well it absorbs you into the character's head. ADWR in that respect is better than most of Bioware's rpgs. Though I must admit, having tried my hand at writing in this style, if you're not careful the dialogue can bloat to obscene sizes really fast. One scene bloated to 2000 words because I had to account for a peaceful attitude and a murderous one.

@@fillosof66689 That's fair, and I can most definitely agree in regards to games that present themselves as being malleable to the player's choices. Looking at you, every Telltale game. This is a rare masterpiece I doubted would ever see the light of day on place like KZbin. Since it contains a lot of taboo subjects never ever dared in other video games any author would get so much flak they may never do anything in public again. I can understand why the author never went public about their creation but still it does deserve to be highlighted and not just fade into obscurity for the tiny minority even playing Neverwinter Nights modules. I remember when the old NWNVault died, canceled by their host with not a care in the world for prosperity or preserving the many creations submitted to it. I thought that was it, the end for this and many other modules I played but thankfully I was wrong. Before established "social media" the downloaders reuploaded all the content to the new vault. The wiki for this particular module also is to thank for much of the preservation. It should be noted that the author Valine has changed huge portions of this module several times over which may bring a weird replayability value for those trying an older version. But maybe not. You'd have to run older versions of the game including Hak paks, resorting in something similar to DLL dependency hell, familiar to many software developers alike. To even have that experience you need the module open in the toolset while playing to debug and fill the gaps left by missing component and enter commands manually to bypass them. Anyway, here I go ranting about details only other nerds will care about. What I wanted to say is thank you, for giving this obscure piece of video gaming history some justice. This review is superb and somehow you manage to keep it approved and kosher to KZbins community guidelines, an achievement in itself. Great work 👏

I still play on never winter nights multiplayer, the server is called 'City of Arabel' and it is very narrative and story driven with a DM team sometimes seeming as large as the player base. It supports a lot of things - including changing the setting in its entirety. If you want to go and asassinate the King? Sure you're gonna have to work extremely hard because - well, he's the King, he's prepared for such things, But you CAN kill him. Want to start a revolution and deposethe king, Queen, all of his nobles french revolution style? It's gonna depend on how many players support you as it's gonna involve some heavy player versus player conflicts but it can be done. Want to open a portal to the hells and make demonic pacts? You can do this - Sure when goodly characters find out your lifespan is going to be a head shorter but you CAN do it if you're sneaky enough, and evil clerics are not silenced on sight, conflict is encouraged.

I absolutely loved playing A Dance with Rouges. I first tried it in 2019 and have finished it in a week. It is the best module one can play in NWN, no other one can measure. While I do know that there are other good ones to play, for instance The Prophet, No Honor Among Thieves, Demonheart, Bastard of Kosigan and many others that keep popping up in the best module pole, some of which I have played too, they are only half good IMO. It felt so good playing a rouge, I never knew how resourceful they could get. The author successfully showed us the use a rouge could have, in contrast to the typical fantasy type, who offer some ranged damage assistance and open a few locks here and there, but nothing much else. ADWR has what I deem important for a quality game - good story, well written dialogue, good and clever use of mechanics, not too much fighting (I tire of constant fights that almost all RPGs have), original ideas not used in a game before, feeling of making a choice that actually changes your gaming experience and overall content meant for adults, to which I say, why not? Since many adults play video games, I do not understand the need to tone down some themes. As a kid I thought how important it was to be able to digest darker and heavier themes since I believed that would make me more mature and more ready for the real world. Video games, like all types of media, expose us to the human condition, which can be used to prepare us for real life tragedies. Deep down, we all have a need to process something darker from time to time, it cannot be all sunshine and smiles. And I have noticed that you have played the enhanced version of this module. I have played the latest version meant for NWN Diamond. The difference between those two lie not only in the graphics, but also in the different chronological order some quests were given. For instance, the player gets teleported with Pia in the second part in the older version, not in the first and yes, the area around the castle should have been overfilled with snow. Too bad not many players have heard of this module since today more than ever we thirst for quality stories.

ADWR ??!!!! A TRUE MAN OF CULTURE... the rabbit hole of mods for Neverwinter Nights 1... what memories, there is a fan offshot, called "a dance with spies"
@alexlindstrom99712 жыл бұрын
Neverwinter 1 is one of *those* games. Very special, especially if you played it when it first came out. For me, it was my first real PC RPG on my own PC that I built as a pre-teen with chore and birthday money. It was the summer, and I stayed up every night until about 2 AM playing it. I was so into it that I kept a journal -- in character -- and just thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience. Some of the best memories of my otherwise pretty unhappy early days.

it is really interesting how big this authored-by-women grimdark sex fantasy scene actually is if you poke around, content like this is like the tip of the iceberg, even if it's like arguably the most impressive offering. i wonder how much of the tes side of this community is people like this. really interesting module, and something i actually bumped into while perusing modules to coop with a friend, so it was cool to see this video pop up

The return of the soy cheese. Warlockracy cinematic universe has so much sprinkled into every new addition. Glad you're still doing well, despite recent events. Always a highlight of the month when you upload, can't wait to see what comes next.

Man, I wish there was a redone version of the mod's original latter parts. That snow setting looks way more visually interesting, and the dragon stuff sounds zany - it sounds more interesting in general, judging from other comments.

Just a tip to whoever watches this video and decides to play the module: The CONSTITUTION you set the princess changes the size of the breasts considerably. 16 being max and 8 being minimum. it changes some dialogues and interactions. The princess LAST NAME will be the name of the Family used on dialogue. Bump up your BLUFF skill in the begining and learn to play Lier Dice, AKA 66, you can thank me later. The PAINTINGS you find underneath the Dhorn adiministrations can be hanged, so buy bags to take them out of there and store them somewhere before you finish your lessons. There is no such thing as a dead end, use the SEARCH SKILL to check up every wall, in time you'll have a third sense to find secret passages. If you have the apartment before starting "Uncovering The Dhorn Spies" your ex roomate "Trissa" is going to show up, if you bed her you can UNLOCK A SECRET COSMETIC item. THE NECKLACE BORIS DROPS after dying is used in the temple underneath the city to check up in what path you are on on the 13th steps. To enter the BLUE SWAN you'll need a modest dress. And also, thats where the Lier Dice comes into play. That sidequest is important later. AND WHATEVER YOU DO, DONT ENTER THE SWAN AND MAIDEN!!!!!!

Gamedevs, especially modern and acclaimed ones (no, not you Bethesda, you're beyond redemption) could learn a lot from this but if there was only one thing for me to choose it would be writing dialogues.

I remember this module back in zee day. I don't think I ever played another module that made me care about the main character on a personal level more. In so many modules, the main character is a kind of blank slate that just sort of inhabits the game world. But this felt more like an interacting novel, and the Princesses journey was deeply personal and, at times, emotional. It was dark. Seriously, seriously dark. But an incredible story that build to a satisfying conclusion. Of course, I got my happy ending with my hot lesbian love interest.

One more for good measure but I was surprised to see she'd come back again to update the thing. I've played this a few times and some of the features and even whole aspects of the story have changed over the years. A new ending was even added after long enough(for the whole series). Hyath used to not even be a demon but some kind of powerful psychic thing that was nesting in your head. More mind flayer, and it was pretending to be a dragon. A whole castle intrigue thing was added in chapter two. The painter who gets caught used to be a man. And seeing updated in 2020 on it and all the different assets she added in the new update continues to amaze. The fact I can come back to this thing and be experiencing not just something old, but something new gets my spirit jazzed for another run at some point this year.

Oh how awesome.... I'm super digging everything about the backstory of this and the person who made it, right down to the whole obvious inspiration from the ASoIaF books when they were relevant in fantasy circles and before it became a big mainstream thing with the HBO adaptation (which I had serious problems with from the first season, couldn't keep watching because I felt like they were screwing up or leaving out really important parts right from the start... and I felt so validated in that judgement when it came out what utter frauds the showrunners were, and how they immediately made it obviously awful to everyone as soon as they ran out of material to adapt)... just the whole idea that something like this was the product of exposing an intelligent 12 year old girl to some... yes, definitely age inappropriate material.... in the ASoIaF books and then being given the freedom to create something in Neverwinter Nights when she was older... lol I almost feel compelled to play this, like I would regret it if I didn't now that I know about it : D Thank you for doing this video, I'm going to have to learn how to play NWN now just for this lol

Crazy to see this module in action again after so long - this is what I got NWN off ebay for ten or so years ago, but while the actual roleplaying and RPG aspects of it were really good even back then, I was ultimately soured on it for the blatant porn-with-plot aspects. Nothing inherently wrong with it, but I wasn't into it. I still finished it, and it's interesting to see how it's evolved since way back then. I played back when the Sex-Sniffing Dragon was still a thing. It's fun to see that even more RPG elements were added in, like the make-up and attire bonuses. Prophet and Honor Among Thieves are both really good - with HAT being a less sexed-up take on rogue-dominated NWN gameplay. Much shorter than this, though. Keep up the good work.

Funny enough, I saw a trailer for an actual HAT movie today. Coincidence?

After playing Age of Decadence inspired by your video I'm now playing this. Really enjoying it, just amazing to think it was made by a savant developer that knew barely anything about video games or game development. The reactivity is good and the mod keeps surprising me. I hope you'll do ADWR part 2. I'm really curious, but it seems technically janky.

Back when I wrote my own passion project RPG / interactive novel, I was in a similar position. It was TERRIBLY coded and probably 100 people at most played it but the lack of formal knowledge gave the whole thing a charm I never could recapture. Pure lighting in a bottle. I can actually code & write these days and the result is I can't recreate such a coherent mess. I now know why it's a bad idea to design that way. I didn't back then so I just kept working until something usable came out of it. Basically, for weirdly large passion RPG projects you're paradoxically better off knowing less, not more, as you'll look past the obvious design flaws and just bullishly stick to your vision until the end. Much like this mod's creator I also came back years later to fix up my naive creation & it now sits abandoned on my website, likely never to be played again. I definitely won't. Just looking at it gives me anxiety after that 10 year dev cycle and it'll always be my best game, even if I do a proper one in future. No one sane writes a plot with 7 joinable factions, 4 unique endings, and a 5th alternate ending where you destroy the world, etc - an insanity with more words in it than the LOTR trilogy, and does it all alone. That just is not a reasonable project. I presume it's similar for this thing's creator. Got older & wiser and will likely never outdo this creation.

I had heard of A Dance with Rogues but never actually seen a break down of it. I'm blown away by just how slick and professional the presentation was (for 2006 RPG) that didn't shy away from unpleasant subject matter and actually forced the player to role-play as something other than a murder-hobo in their RPG - imagine that. I'd love to see a part 2 to finish this off.

It's so strange seeing this mod still get updated. I remember playing it in 2007 or 2008 or something, it looked completely different back then and didn't have half the content in this video, and yet it delivered complete experience. I came back to the mod sometime in 10s and it was updated and looked different. The part 2 even had two new companions. And now in 2022 it yet again looks different.

I played the crap out of NWN's online servers but only recently heard about this module since it gets brought up anytime NWN does on /vrpg/. This video transports me back to the "I am twelve and what is this" I experienced constantly back then. Pretty much every server besides the arena/CTF ones had players ERPing even if it was the against the rules. Some straight up had unique items in the game and sleezy backroom areas to use them. This module seems way more interesting than any of those because it's an actual game with interesting mechanics.
