A very tidy looking buttonhole in seed stitch, many thanks. I was so disappointed when I started my button band with the regular bind off/cast on buttonhole and it looked sloppy, you have saved my project!

Cheryl, I just found this video 6 years after you posted it, but I have to tell you that this technique is working beautifully for my Not-So-Warm jacket by Sally Melville. I didn't like the pattern's buttonholes as they completely disappear never to be found agsin! Your technique is wonderful. I made vertical buttonholes in thd skirt of the jacket and horizontal ones in the bodice. Thank you, thank you!

I did it!!!! Thank you so very much for the awesome tutorial!!! It was my very first ever knitted button hole attempt and I had never tried to add on stitches like this. A few more rows to complete ....then my first scarf [neck wrap warmer] is complete!

This looks like a really neat way to work buttonholes, my pattern instructions make for an untidy, fiddly buttonhole, not good for baby knits !!! thank you for your wonderful video, best I've seen in a long while. Once again thank you.

So happy I found your video. I had been working on a second sweater that used seed stitch for the button band and I wasn't happy with the buttonhole technique that I used on my first sweater. I just tested your buttonhole on a swatch and loved it. I'm now more motivated to include buttons with this second sweater. Thanks so much for posting your videos. They are very clear and easy to see.

Thank you Cheryl. I just signed up. Is there anything I should consider when I'm doing this buttonhole in seed stitch? For example, should I start the buttonhole after completing a purl stitch? Also, to maintain the k/p pattern of seed stitch coming out of the buttonhole, would I need to make a buttonhole with an odd number of stitches? Maybe it doesn't matter but I did notice you said something about working with a row that has an odd number of stitches and you also pointed out that the buttonhole looks very nice with a purl stitch on either side of the hole. The sweater button band I'm working on has an even number of stitches in the row. Thank you for any suggestions.
@CherylBrunetteTV7 жыл бұрын
Yes on the odd number of sts. I think it's much tidier if you have the "corners" match. Otherwise, no recommendations. I would try it out and see which I liked best, purls at the ends or knits.

These videos are really helpful and clearly explained. What would help even more is a closer camera focus on the detailed moves as you stitch. So many buttonhole vids just don't explain anything well at all

That's an interesting observation. I try, in general, to keep the visual distance about the same as it would normally be from the eye to the hands. Too close and you lose context, too far and you can't see it clearly. This was shot back when all I had was my hands threaded through the legs of a tripod for an overhead shot. I have a better set-up now with an overhead bracket but it's always a bit of a challenge, when working alone to pay attention to the script, actual knitting, and staying within the frame of a close-up.

Thank you so very much for this video. I was just starting the right side of a cardigan where the buttonhole band is in double moss stitch. The yarn/over buttonhole works, but not as sturdy. The one that you demonstrated is sturdier and leaves the band nice and flat compared with the yarn/over one tend to bulch a little. Thanks again very much, happy in Colorado!

Thank you Cheryl. This purl cast on is a great method and I am going to use it on my jacket. I have found the appearance of the knit cast on one row buttonhole unacceptable and when I have unpicked it, the stitches tend to knot and stick, which is why (until now) I have preferred the two row buttonhole. Thank you again. :)x

I use this method but the difference is I use it with purl cable cast on instead of purl cast on. I will have a go with the purl cast on. I have used this method with ribbing and some turn out better than others. I thing the trick is not to pull the yarn tight at the ends, but that is a good top to have a purl at each end of the buttonhole.
@CherylBrunetteTV8 жыл бұрын
I think I tried the purl cable cast on and there's not a significant difference. I'm going to eventually get around to showing some vertical buttonholes for ribbing. I think. I swear, I'm slowing down in a way I don't quite understand . . . I hope you'll come to cherylbrunette.com and join my email newsletter group if you haven't already. Great video. But I learned that method making the Voodo fingerless gloves from Knitty.com. The designer of the Voodo linked to 2 different webpages for this method to use as a thumb opening. I wonder if Knitty could add a link to your KZbin video?
@CherylBrunetteTV8 жыл бұрын
Thanks Eunice. That's a great idea, to use this kind of buttonhole for a thumb opening. I looked it up and this one of mine is very slightly different in that I move the yarn twice at the beginning of the buttonhole, but the principle is the same. You can request that Knitty link to my buttonhole. That would be lovely. Are you on my email newsletter list yet at cherylbrunette.com? That's where I'm trying to bring more coherence to my body of work. I found a Eunice who joined a couple of months ago with no last name so perhaps that's you. Anyway. Please join us.

I did the same thing! It was the only way I knew of to add a thumb hole - an "enlarged" buttonhole. I did my daughter's fingerless gloves without a pattern and just eyeballed where the thumb would go as I was knitting. I wrote down everything I did so the second glove would be the same. She loves them!

If this isn't a good buttonhole to use on stockinette, what is? Seriously, I have a pattern where one-row buttonholes are placed in stockinette fabric and the instructions in the pattern create a sloppy, unstable buttonhole. I'm still looking for an alternative.
@CherylBrunetteTV8 жыл бұрын
I'm starting to address the larger field of buttonholes. How to do a couple of vertical ones, for example. Does your pattern have a single layer of stockinette? It rolls, right. The only time I use st st at an edge, it's faced, 2 layers, and there are some lovely alternatives for the 2-layered fabric. Do you belong to my email list at cherylbrunette.com? That's where I announce what's coming up (and there is a podcast about buttonholes in the works) and I'm trying to pull all my resources into one index.

very nice looking...maybe I'll actually put a buttonhole on my sweaters... usually, I just let the sides hang with no closures, but this is certainly handsome-looking.
