### Valentine’s Special: Birdie There she was again, sobbing on the floor between the pillars, holding what looked like her fifth birdie in her palms. By the looks of it, it was another tragedy that couldn’t be stopped. I could guess what happened from the mess on her lap; it was definitely a cat again. I approached her cautiously with a small casket in my hands before settling down beside her. I put it down beside her and took a moment to look at her. “Why are you so persistent about having a birdie?” “It makes me feel a little closer to the freedom I will never get to have.” She was a mess. Her multiple braids, in waist-length tangles, and her coffee-or rather, as she liked to call it, ‘tea’-colored kohl completely smudged, gave her false dark circles. Her floor-length dress was all crumpled up, but even in her disarray, she looked the most perfect to me. I looked away and focused on the sunset between the hills instead, in case my gaze gave away too much. “Did you talk to your father about wanting to be a ballerina? What’d he say?” I handed her my handkerchief. “The same,” she dabbed at her face. “My fiancé does not like the idea.” My heart clenched upon hearing the word “fiancé.” I thought I could be happy with just the bare minimum: getting to sit with her and enjoy the autumn breeze, having evening tea with her family. But I hung around for too long, and now it was too late. The first time Giselle caught my eye, she was practicing ballet alone by the riverbank, away from the public eye. I remember that day like it was this very moment. I was returning home for Christmas and stopped when I heard music. The music was coming from a battered old vinyl record player, and there she was, practicing. When was the magical moment, you ask? When she caught my arm and kept me from stepping into the water; or I’d have been carried away by the currents. That was it. She practiced so discreetly to avoid the neighbors' gossip. That was the condition her dad allowed her to pursue ballet under. In front of society, she had to be a polished daughter ready to get married off to a nobleman. After that day, I came by daily to watch her practice and help her keep an eye out in case anyone was coming this way. We started spending time together outside her practice sessions too. I met her family, and they were pleasant people; her dad just a tad bit old fashioned. Often, I thought of confessing as we watched the sunrise together. However, I never did, as I did not want to hinder her dream. If her feelings were mutual, the next step would be in question: marriage. The Giselle I knew only wanted to perform ballet on big stages; she did not want to get married. And if she did not feel the same way, all this would end. Our precious friendship would fall apart. I did not want that. Cowardly of me; I know. “José?” she pulled me out of my thoughts one sunset. I nodded at her to carry on. “What is your dream?” “Dream?” “What keeps you pushing through every day when your employee gives you a hard time?” I could not give her an answer on the spot and had to think long and hard for this one. So I told her I’d give her an answer once I found one. Present day, looking at her, I realized that I still did not know what my driving force was or if I even had one. I can’t say I was passionate about my junior attorney’s job. However, I liked seeing this woman happy, and her words of encouragement are what got me through the tough days at work. I loved the look on her face as she danced. She danced like there was no one else in the world other than her, and dancing alone replenished her. Her beautiful brunette hair whipping at the air as she moved; sometimes fast and sometimes slow but never overpowering. She was graceful and light on her feet. She looked the most breathtaking when she stood still against the sun. I was no artist, but in my mind, I could easily trace across her forehead to her perfect nose and her beautiful lips. I was totally infatuated with her. I could sit still and admire her for hours but felt my breath getting caught in my throat the moment she looked my way. I was scared that I’d get caught. It did not sit right with me. I had considered waiting around for her until her dreams come true, but all of a sudden, her dream was getting crushed right in front of me, and there was nothing I could do. It could’ve been me, but I was late, and some other suitor came by. I’d liked her for quite some time now, but I did not make a move as I knew then I’d be standing between her and her dream, but I would’ve supported her dream, of course, and now she’s ending up with someone who doesn’t. We buried her little birdie in a corner of her backyard, someplace people don’t walk by often. The sun was setting, and after a warm cup of her everyday evening tea, she had managed to calm down. “Will you be alright? Letting your dream go?” “I do not know, actually, but what I do know is that I love my father and would hate to watch him break down in front of the society that respects him now. And I wish to never be the cause that breaks him.” “What about the marriage? What is your fiancé like? Do you like him?” She fiddled with her dress and avoided my gaze as she answered this one. “He’s a merchant in the capital. I have not seen him and probably will not until marriage. Father says he’s really busy.” “I thought as a lover of art, you would believe more in love at first sight than arranged marriages.” She whipped around to look at me before saying, “What if I said I am? Would that change anything?” Stunned, I said nothing this time as I looked into those glassy orbs of hers that seemed to look through my soul and know just what I was thinking. The sun had already set, and as I walked her home, the air seemed to have changed. She left without a smile or another word. A few days have passed since my last talk with Giselle. I have not been there to see her since that time. I was finally going over to her place. I arrive, and before their gardener can usher me towards where she is, I tell him who I am actually meeting, and he lets me in. I enter and actually feel like my nerves might get the worst of me. It’s been a couple of hours now as I head over to the riverbank. I watch her practicing from a distance and decide not to disturb her. I leave the little wooden box I brought with me and a little piece of rolled-up parchment behind her and waited in the bushes a little further. She turned to turn off the recorder, and her eyes landed on the box. I quickly ducked in time before she could notice me. I watched as her facial expression changed from her usual poker face to a her very own quizzical smile. I let out a breath I didn’t realize I was holding. She opens up the box, and as she reaches her hand in, she calls out, asking me to show myself now. As I come out of the bushes, I cannot help but feel nervous. I was often told that I am too calm even for a lawyer, but whenever it came to this woman, I found myself melting like I was put right beside a fireplace. I could feel myself sweating. She holds up the piece of parchment, her eyebrow slightly raised, as if asking for clarification. twitter: x.com/julyswillow insta: instagram.com/julyswillow/

Yes, I have committed sins more than blessings. I earned bittersweet blessings and emotions, and now it is as it is-living my life with the knife in my stomach. That knife calls itself my 'antithesis,' keeping me away from committing a conscious sin.But, gentlemen, why are we humans blessed with three minds and only one heart? How can a single heart bear the longings of three brains, where each is different, quenching its own thirst, and with the consequences borne by this tormented heart?
@Second2Acc2 ай бұрын
Don't remove the knife from your stomach, this will cause more pain not only to you but also to people. But when the time comes, like it always did, you will feel that your sins have been purified. While even humans have only one heart and three minds, even if we are blessed with a steel brain, a steel soul and hearts made of glass - the most fragile glass in the world - there is always a little hope in our pocket.

Believe me, The only one who can forgive and make you rest is God. With his warm and merciful love he forgives your sins. This does not mean that you will not suffer the consequences of them, but you can be free from the weight of guilt, which was borne by his son Jesus Christ. Seek him with the only heart you have.
