This film features the experiences of David Whitmer as Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery stay with his family in Fayette, New York, to finish the translation of the Book of Mormon. Among other events, Martin Harris joins David and Oliver as the three become the chosen witnesses of the divinity of the Book of Mormon and the sacred plates from which the book was translated.

There is no greater work established on the earth than that of God in its fulness. As a member since 1976 I had to find my testimony from a child to grown adult and go through the multiple programs of the Church to go through the stages of Priesthood progression this led me to the fact that this is the work and the glory to bring to pass the eternal life of man. And logically speaking, don't you find it odd that God would write something in an oddball language. The author is Karel van der Toorn. The article is about a papyrus roll (P. Amherst 63) discovered in the late 19th century at Luxor (ancient Thebes). It took more than 120 years to decipher the text. It was discovered that Egyptian Demotic script had been used to write Aramaic text! The translation turned out to include three Israelite psalms written about 400BC. This is an example of "reformed Egyptian" used by Israelites and discovered by non-Mormons!

It seems incredible that these people all had access to the Bible,( with it's ,'everlasting gospel,' able to 'make a man wise unto salvation' clearly laid out), and Christ's own promises that his word's would never pass away. Yet Joseph Smith managed to convince these farmers that he had seen and talked to God, Jesus, angels, old testament characters, and been given the mantle of prophet and priest by the Almighty himself, and so much more, they may have been lovely people, but they were highly gullible, disobedience and foolish and heedless to God's word. As with Adam and Eve they paid the price of doubting God, "hath God said"? Then, as now, they allowed their feelings to supersede the authority of God's word, a feature strongly evident in today's church as witnessed in these comments, (l feel it's true, therefore it must be true). This new arrival even convinced them that the Bible was corrupted and the true gospel was 'lost,' and God was using him, Joseph, to restore it. Sadly and obviously this small group of gullible American farmers were deceived and did not trust the testimony of God in His Word or test Joseph Smith's absurd claims against the Holy scriptures. They received 'another gospel' warned about in the Bible and another spirit, enabling this tragic deception spread via Joseph Smith's church of today. Kind regards to all.

I love that line, "This is the work of the Almighty God. It is I who should be thankful." It keeps what I do in the Church, however small, tedious, inconvenient, difficult, or monotinous, in perspective, and with an understanding that we are always blessed for it. I have never known of a time when that was not the case. When the Lord builds his church, like a loving father who invites his children to work in the field, his aim is to build his relationships with each of us as well. Sometimes we are told that this work has nothing to do with us, and that we must never ask, "What is in it for me?" (Which is true). And yet, at the same time, we come to discover that this work has everything to do with us, and that we always recieve more from the Father than what we put in.

"The Lord is silent because of me!" What a heartwrenching statement. There is a lot of people feel this; People who feel they are lost to God because they assume their mistakes are beyond forgiveness. It is those people whom we must go after and bring back. It is those people to whom God wants to be part of his work. I believe it was for this reason that the Lord chose Martin as a witness. Martin needed to know that he was more important than 116 translated lost pages, and that if the Lord did not successfully convey that message, he would lose him forever. I believe we are far more important and precious to God than our collection of personal failures would have us believe. The reason the Lord says that we must address him as "Our Father, who art in heaven" is because it is that title that defines his relationship to us. He is our loving father and nothing will change that. He is that Father who reaches out his "spiritually autistic" children in hopes that he will make that connection. His children, while in that autistic state, might make a mess of things, but that is beside the point, and does not define nor deter a father's resolve to reach out. The father's aim is to make that connection through any means possible, and once he does, he will refuse to let go. That is how Heavenly Father sees us. The remedy to this is the atonement of Jesus Christ. I was talking about Martin Harris's inability to forgive himself. I was talking about how we as human beings are more important to our Heavenly Father than any piece of lost scripture, and how we deny ourselves the ability to connect with him due to our inability to forgive ourselves. I was not talking about actual physical autism nor it's causes, pharmaceutical or not. For those people who say it’s not big deal that Joseph used a seer stone in the hat then why does the church scrupulously avoid showing it? The reason is because it’s weird they know it’s weird and even more so knowing that same stone was used on treasure digging expeditions which never produced anything. They don’t show certain things because they know it will cast doubt on the church’s truth claims. If it helped with their claims they would show it. Martin Harris still held a lot of guilt which may have kept him back from seeing the plates at the same time as his brethren. But he humbled himself sufficiently the same day and he saw both the Angel and the plates. God is merciful and loving.

They didn't see the plates (the three and then the eight) with physical sight but with spiritual sight. David Whitmer broke from Joseph Smith because of his developing the doctrine of the plurality of Gods which Whitmer said was inconsistent with both the bible as well as the original book of Mormon.

Consider David Whitmer’s Testimony The February issue of Liahona magazine (published by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) includes a supplement to the church’s religious study curriculum, “Come, Follow Me.” The magazine article looks briefly at two Book of Mormon witnesses, David Whitmer and Martin Harris-both of whom, along with Oliver Cowdery (a third Book of Mormon witness), left the LDS church in the late 1830s. Around that time, Joseph Smith leveled all sorts of charges against these men (e.g., lying, cheating, deceiving, etc.) and told the Latter-day Saints that the three Book of Mormon witnesses were “too mean to mention; and we had liked to have forgotten them” (History of the Church, 3:232). Nevertheless, the LDS church today promotes them as “men of integrity” (Come, Follow Me, Book of Mormon, 2020, Appendix C) and puts great stock in their testimonies that are always published in front of the Book of Mormon (testimonies which they never denied). As I read the February issue of Liahona, I was interested to see what the article had to say about David Whitmer because, not only did he leave the LDS church in 1838 never to return, he also published a “pamphlet” in 1887 to testify further about the history and teachings of “the so-called Mormons.” In fact, I was somewhat surprised to see that the Liahona article quotes from that source when it includes David Whitmer’s statement affirming that he had never denied his published testimony regarding the Book of Mormon. The Liahona article doesn’t say much more than that about David Whitmer, yet it seems to me that if Mr. Whitmer is considered by the LDS church to be a trustworthy witness, and his 1887 pamphlet is quoted as trustworthy as well, perhaps David Whitmer’s further testimony about the LDS church is worthy of consideration. David was one of five Whitmer brothers who formally testified to the validity of the Book of Mormon. His two sisters were married to two additional Book of Mormon witnesses, thus the Whitmer family alone represented seven of the eleven witnesses. In 1838, all Whitmer-affiliated family members who were still living (two of the Whitmer brothers had died in 1835) left the LDS church (only David’s sister, Elizabeth Ann, and her husband, Oliver Cowdery, ever returned, and this for a relatively short time). Over the years, many rumors floated about that David Whitmer had denied his testimony of the Book of Mormon. Thus his affirmation of “the truth of all [his] statements, as then made and published” that he included in the opening pages of his 1887 pamphlet, An Address to All Believers in Christ. To his dying day, David Whitmer claimed that the experience to which he attested in the Book of Mormon’s “Testimony of Three Witnesses” actually happened, and so he remained convinced that the Book of Mormon was the word of God. But David Whitmer also believed and testified-unequivocally-that Joseph Smith was a fallen prophet and that many of the teachings embraced by the LDS church would cause a man to “lose his soul” (35). What follows are some examples of further passionate testimony from David Whitmer, a “man of integrity” that the LDS church hopes people will believe when it comes to the Book of Mormon, but simultaneously hopes people will disbelieve and dismiss when it comes to the rest of his testimony. “We do not indorse the teachings of any of the so-called Mormons or Latter Day Saints, which are in conflict with the gospel of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, as taught in the New Testament and the Book of Mormon. They have departed in a great measure from the faith of the Church of Christ as it was first established, by heeding revelations given through Joseph Smith, who, after being called of God to translate his sacred word - the Book of Mormon - drifted into many errors and gave many revelations to introduce doctrines, ordinances and offices in the church, which are in conflict with Christ’s teachings.” (4; original spelling and punctuation retained from the original) “But the Latter Day Saints have another book of doctrine - the ‘Doctrine and Covenants’ - in which are doctrines that Christ never taught to the ‘twelve’ at Jerusalem, nor to the ‘twelve’ upon this continent. The Latter Day Saints believe these new doctrines, which do not agree with the teachings of Christ. Why do they believe them? Because they are putting too much trust in man!” (26) “If you believe my testimony to the Book of Mormon; if you believe that God spake to us three witnesses by his own voice, then I tell you that in June, 1838, God spake to me again by his own voice from the heavens, and told me to ‘separate myself from among the Latter Day Saints, for as they sought to do unto me, so should it be done unto them.’ In the spring of 1838, the heads of the church and many of the members had gone deep into error and blindness.” (27) “Now, all honest men will understand, after they have read this pamphlet through, that I am doing God’s will in bringing the truth to light concerning the errors of Brother Joseph. They will see that it is necessary, as he is the man who introduced many doctrines of error into the Church of Christ; and his errors must be made manifest and the truth brought to light, in order that all Latter Day Saints shall cease to put their trust in this man, believing his doctrines as if they were from the mouth of God.” (39) “The revelation given through Brother Joseph as mouthpiece on April 6, 1830, that he should be ordained Seer to the Church, after God had commanded him that He would grant him no other gift but to translate the Book of Mormon, I give you my testimony brethren that this revelation is not of God.” (41) “And when the Book of Commandments was printed, Joseph and the church received it as being printed correctly. This I know. In the winter of 1834 they saw that some of the revelations in the Book of Commandments had to be changed, because the heads of the church had gone too far, and had done things in which they had already gone ahead of some of the former revelations. So the book of ‘Doctrine and Covenants’ was printed in 1835, and some of the revelations changed and added to.” (56; italics in the original) “There is nothing in the New Testament part of either the Bible or Book of Mormon concerning a one-man leader or head to the church…Who was ‘Prophet Seer and Revelator’ to the church at Jerusalem? They had none. Who was ‘Prophet Seer and Revelator’ to the church upon this land? They had none. And we had no such office in the church in these last days for the first eight months of its existence, until Brother Joseph went into this error on April 6, 1830, and, after unwittingly breaking a command of God by taking upon himself such an office, in a few years those revelations were changed to admit this high office, which otherwise would have condemned it. They were changed to mean something entirely different from the way they were first given and printed in the Book of Commandments; as if God had not thought of this great and important office when he gave those revelations. Yet in the face of the written word of God, and in the face of all this evidence, the majority of Latter Day Saints will still cling to the revelations of Joseph Smith and measure the written word of God by them, instead of measuring Joseph Smith and his revelations by the written word.” (46) The LDS church asks people to trust and believe David Whitmer’s unverifiable testimony that an angel showed him the Book of Mormon gold plates, and that God’s voice told him the translation of the book was true. At the same time, the LDS church denies David Whitmer’s eyewitness, evidence-laden testimony regarding Joseph Smith and the false revelations, altered revelations, and pretended revelations that have led the Latter-day Saints “deep into error and blindness.” David Whitmer feared that Latter-day Saints would eschew all the available evidence; that they would “cling” to Joseph Smith and his fallacious revelations, choosing something similar to what was urged by LDS apostle Neil Andersen at the church’s October 2015 General Conference: “To those of faith who, looking through the colored glasses of the 21st century, honestly question events or statements of the Prophet Joseph from nearly 200 years ago, may I share some friendly advice: For now, give Brother Joseph a break!” (“Faith Is Not by Chance, but by Choice”) David Whitmer looked at Joseph Smith as a contemporary. He was there. He understood the events and statements that he witnessed in their context. He was definitely not looking through the colored glasses of centuries gone by; he was looking through the tears of one who had at one time been a devoted follower of Joseph Smith and a true believer in the Mormon church. While David Whitmer believed, via a spiritual experience, that the Book of Mormon was of God, he never denied his eyewitness testimony that Joseph Smith was guilty of teaching “many errors and gave many revelations to introduce doctrines, ordinances and offices in the church, which are in conflict with Christ’s teachings.” These are serious charges, brought by one whom the LDS church recognizes as a man of integrity. Are they not, then, worthy of serious consideration?

At 19:43 in this video ...Where's the seer stones (urim and thummim) and the hat he looked in? Was it purposefully not included? I thought that was a big part of the story. I know the seer stones in the hat didn't work to find Spanish mine's treasure when Joseph was younger (you can read this in wikipedia under seer stones), but I thought they'd show it because it's like a big part of the story that he had the brown rock and the white rock.

First of all, wikipedia. Second of all, the hat isn't as big a deal as it is made out to be. People like to dramatize the hat; it was probably just something that made translation easier. Do you know the nature of the seer stones? No, so one being entirely unaccustomed and unfamiliar with such an object could never, in their right mind, jump to conclusions. "Uncomfortable history" well, first present to me this history; there is always a reasonable response to contradict skeptical, biased remarks. Second, read all the other documantation about how he translated (or "wrote" for the skeptics) it in only 90 days (which is humanly impossible), and read more about the other detailed accounts of the translation process, namely that he never used any notes, and never used any references of any kind to find his place again after a break. He didnt need to, being so acquainted with the powers of heaven. The normal processes, methods, tricks, and tips used for writing a book are simply not found in Joseph Smith's case. They weren't needed due to the fact that those tricks and tips were created by man, and the methods by which Joseph translated were created by God

Deicide Ego Sum Maybe the details you point out are a distraction from the important message of the story. Anytime a true story is dramatized on film they have to leave unimportant details out so they can highlight the IMPORTANT details of the story. I just watched Ford vs Ferrari. Do you think that movie had all the details of the story? Absolutely not and all kinds of untrue details added in. Is it some sinister plot to deceive the public? Of course not. The details left out would have been a distraction from the story they wanted to tell. Now back to this story; if they show a curtain and Joseph looking into a hat that brings up all kinds of questions that need to get answered and how does it help the important message the film has to tell? They are clearly guilty of good story telling. Although I do wish we could deal with these extraneous details at church so people don’t get misled by the anti propaganda online.

Judgement comes to only those who judge, you have your will of creation upon all creation so judge not less ye be, judged yourself. Mormons have some misunderstanding but they have most understanding, Mormons have been saved for the end times, they are first to enter the gates of Heaven as there are multitudes. Everything I've learned, I have learned on my own. I have never read the Bible till after I had my dreams with Jesus, he himself explained things to me. I explained everything in my book. Everyone has all word of creation upon them, each word has their own cell of aura, it is a firmament as this Galactic cell is the body of Christ, it has an aura and you are a word of creation within the body of Christ, you live the body of Christ and he has already died for your sins. Within the handshake of all things, Jesus was the Body, he lived the experience of the spirit of the most high and the will of the father is the will within the body of Christ he gets to live the body of Christ with no powers, only faith, he will only present himself by the word and he stands firm with all the word. Genesis, Moses is not leading us into the book of word he is leading us out, back to the beginning. (Example) God placed a firmament between all the word and us as word have been placed within a six feet firmament caused by the corona-tion/crown lasted a year. Next is the (word was God) goes on all this year. Next year the word will start understanding these things and it will be, the (word was with God.) Next year after the word will have their full understanding of these things and God will be one with (the Word) as they are the bride to the body of Messiah. (Bible says, God comes by the truth of your heart is your crown)means/corona, it is also your body and your Galactic cell upon Omega. We are the word of God and our actions are the signs of word, welcome to the corona/tion. Each sentence in the Bible is a sentence from order and each sentence is a year sentence as (1 in the beginning was the word) and (2 the word was with God) and (3 the word was God) (4 and the corona/crown has placed us as word six feet of firmament from each other.) Truth of word flows eternally forward as the distortion of truth is number, numb/cold power numb/ber. The multitudes are being taken back from death/darkness as legion is many, took everything from all the word. The light in the darkness is this grain of earth within this universal body and it is protecting all of life as you have a Galactic cell out there and this Galactic cell we are in right now is the body of Christ, you live the body of Christ within Omega as you have all word/will of creation upon you, within each cell is a throne, for all word of creation, you have your will/word of creation upon equal me/a/sure, you are a universal body, when this is over you will be shown all your action and consequence upon your Galactic realm and when trust is earnt you will claim your universal body again, within this multiverse. (universe/unity of verse/unity of word. I wrote a book it is all over the world, the book is called, The last shall be the first and the first shall be the last by Joseph Darrell Walker. If you know the Bible then you will know everything. Voices in head are not mental, think positive and legion as he is many will leave. Genesis/Moses isn't leading us into the darkness, he is walking us out of it, so read 4,3,2,1, and it will make better sense. All things fall, back to GOD, Isaiah 11;12. The more you wake people up, by that measure has woke up unto you so speak truth to the fullest and you will find faith walking within you.

If the Angel appeared and disappeared with the plates (once Joseph had handed them back) why didn’t he just initially hand the plates to Joseph instead of making him dig them out of the mountain and then run and fight off his attackers?????? Was it for Joseph to see how important they were and how careful he would have to be? Why couldn’t ALL the Whitmers, and esPECially Emma (who never left the Church later) see the plates? There was no risk of these good people stealing them... The only benefit I could see of showing them to several who would later leave the church is to prove that even after they had a falling out, their testimony remained unchanged? But poor faithful Emma. I thought maybe they weren’t shown to her because it was just meant for those who would serve missions, but then Mary got to see them. Emma, who suffered so much and still remained faithful and she was the prophet’s wife and his first scribe!!

While Emma may not have ever "seen" the plates, she knew that Joseph had them. She handled them by moving them around as she cleaned and dusted in the house. She gave a pretty good description of them even though she never saw them. She also knew that Joseph could never have made up the stories in the Book of Mormon because he had so little education.

The Lord wanted them to be translated. Moroni took the golden plates back after they were translated. But the sword of Laban, the Liahona, and seer stones are still on earth. If you watch 'Days of Harmony' (on youtube)it's the other part of this video. It might answer more of your questions. Reading The Book of Mormon will too. Ask God and He will teach you. Scriptures, prayer, searching for the truth is where some answers will come. It's the same church that Jesus Christ restored in The New Testament in the Bible. With the sacrament, priesthood, apostals and prophets, baptism by emerson, etc.. The Lord is still the head of our church. We follow his example. The Book of Mormon also has the teachings of the Lord and contains the fullness of Christ's gospel. God continues to direct his church and love and teach us. He lives.
