I love the patience I see people having when you’re trying to figure out how to say things it’s so sweet to me. People say the French hate speaking French to foreigners but that wasn’t my experience, so this is validating to see I’m not the only one 😂😊

As a parisian we just really hate people who are disrespectful of the culture and of other people. Some examples include walking reeeally slow on the sidewalks without leaving space for others to pass, not leaving space on the left on the escalator, not making space for people exiting the metro, shouting in the metro, speaking really loud in public places, not saying "Bonjour, excusez-moi" when you approach someone, and not making an effort to speak the language or relate to the culture. So if you are careful with those you are likely to have great experiences with people. Just don't be blind to what's happening around you basically, try to adapt

As a Parisian born and raised I feel this is a bit of a cliché. I've heard many of my US, English and Singaporean friends assuming that French people don't like tourists speaking French because we're chauvinistic, precious with the language and don't like foreigners 'butchering' the language (like the baker in that Emily show). This is absolutely not true (and I mean it). There are some cases however, when you're late for work and tourists asks for directions, they try speaking French but honestly you don't really understand (which is normal, there are many different sounds in French). As French is difficult, I politely smile and switch to English because it is easier for both parts to communicate in that situation, and I don't have that much time. But If I'm sitting in a bar and a tipsy tourist starts speaking French, I'm really glad to answer and engage in French

I agree, I found they always seemed appreciative if you were trying, even if it was slow or basic. Sure there was a serveuse here or there that jut spoke english back, but they were often so patient and kind I really loved it!
