Just my 2 pennies. I once pulled a random truck who just peaked into a ditch in a bad snow once. I put a clevis on his trailer hitch, and on the first yank with a recovery rope it ripped his receiver off his truck, it was very rusted underneath and I hadn't noticed. I hooked him again and pulled him out. He then wanted my insurance information so he could file a claim against me for breaking his hitch... And he did just that.

THANK YOU for doing this. I found myself stuck in several inches of snow in the middle of no where with no service. The ONE car that passed by in the 4 hours I was there U-turned, pulled up next to me, and said, "Need a tow?" I couldn't have been any more grateful because at that point I was sure Triple A ditched me because they couldn't find me (walked to a nearby town and had short access to wifi). I’m curious about the legal ramifications/ insurance coverages of operating as a Good Samaritan on public roads if something goes sideways. Are there any disclaimers, whether spoken or written? I’ve helped a number of people stuck on back roads , parking lots and trails, but have always been leary of pulling over to help on major thoroughfares with the potential of becoming entangled in a pileup or the like. @@4x4rescue74I realized this video is in California and a few inches of snow is probably a lot to drivers there, and they may not even have winter tires. 2wd and steep hills are rarely an issue here if the snow isnt higher than your front bumper, but its Canada so most people and their cars are ready for snow driving

I heard from several 4x4 recovery trainers that Rhino lies about their numbers and you shouldn't trust them. They also let me know it's a waste of money to buy official 4x4 or overlanding recovery gear because they put the "overland tax" on that stuff. They recommended going to rigging stores and you'll get higher rated equipment for a lower cost. I bought a few things from ASR (Advanced Synthetic Rigging) and I really like their soft wares. I also just realized you may take this as attacking you about Rhino, I just wanted to hear your opinions on their products, obviously you like them. It's awesome that you're doing this! I love recoveries, it's one of my favorite things about snow wheeling. We were in the Rockies to go out and cut down a Christmas tree and there was a huge blizzard, they ended up shutting down the mountain pass, we recovered two vehicles stuck which was nice.
@4x4rescue74 Жыл бұрын
Anyone who says that has no idea what they’re talking about. These “recovery companies” charge for their services. Rhino does it for free in partnership with 4x4 Rescue. It’s easy to see why they don’t like us. All rhino gear is lab tested and the numbers are legit. I use the equipment daily and never have had an issue.
@mikethompson7406 Жыл бұрын
that’s good, it can be dangerous so I’m glad no problems! I don’t exactly remember, it may have been that Rhino tested 10 items and they used the maximum number the equipment experienced a failure where others used the lowest numberbb where the equipment failed. Obviously, lying vs maximum breaking strength is very different, I can’t exactly remember.
@4x4rescue74 Жыл бұрын
It’s actually an average break strength, Rhino did use the term maximum but that doesn’t mean it’s he highest number seen. I believe a few ( not all) of these companies use the term minimum when it’s actually the average also. Rhino is in the process of switching over all products to a real minimum break strength, new versions are rolling out this year.
@glennkullberg9370 Жыл бұрын
The real problem is not the snow but all the idiots with summer tires in the snow. I drive on similar roads every day without problems thanks to real dedicated winter tires. The other problem are the idiots that is using road salt before and during the snow fall, as a as a pathetic attempt at chemical plowing. Notice all the brown salt-mixed snow, this has virtually no friction.
@4x4rescue74 Жыл бұрын
They use sand and keep in mind this is steep terrain, not flat land. Most people are from San Francisco and are trying to make it up to Tahoe. The locals don’t usually get stuck

Are studded tyres (or proper friction tyres) not mandatory in such places where snow weather of this class occurs?
@4x4rescue74 Жыл бұрын
They’re best for icy roads, we get so much snow up here that sometimes you’re not even making contact with the ground. In off-road conditions or more than 1-2’ it’s best to have wider tires that are aired down so you float and stay on top. Some people still run studded tires but majority of the off-road guys use big mud tires.
@smiIingman Жыл бұрын
@@4x4rescue74 oh yeah i can see it being fine for good ole 4x4 trucks to use well made muddies but i feel like alot of these dudes and dudettes youre helping out are just running basic summer tyres? “Trucks putting on chains and blocking the roads”, last time I checked, it’s a law to use chains when required, so it’s not like truckers are intentionally trying to cause folks in their cars and SUV’s and inconvenience, I mean God forbid they not have any of the commodities on the shelf at the store because a truck driver decided to stop all together instead of chaining up to get over the pass, especially there in California
@4x4rescue74 Жыл бұрын
Problem is they don’t put on chains in the designated areas. They risk it then get stuck, then block the whole freeway. Both cars and trucks are guilty, it’s a common problem up there.

My Brother paid the good Samaritan price when pulling someone out his strap broke and damaged the car being pulled. Caused minor damage but yeah they sued him. Now unfortunately we don't help folks out anymore. It's unappreciated and definitely not worth the potential trouble. It's sad but that's where we've ended up.
