A Day in the Life of a Carer

We decided to follow our Laurel Lodge manager Danielle Bullent and carer Jack Johnson on a typical shift to show what being a carer really means. We focus on the person-centred approach and ensure each of our residents is treated like an individual, and supported to lead as independent lives as possible.
It's important to show off the hard work and dedication of social care staff whose job is all about compassion, understanding, and forming strong bonds to ensure our residents quality of life is the absolute best it can be.

My mother is a care assistant and I admire all she does for her residents, I’ve been thinking about it a lot lately as I love the older generation, they’ve got so many stories to tell, more than a history teacher could. The only obstacle I have is dealing with residents who’ve got dementia, some of them can be really harsh with their words and I’m very sensitive, I know it’s not their fault but it can still sting quite a bit.

I'm a carer too and yes they can rub you off the wrong end sometimes. It's their way of asking for help. I've been doing it for a year now and I don't regret it. You should definitely give it a go, it's a special career.

Hello, I am from Bangladesh. I want to be a caregiver. I have done the IELTS exam. Though I didn't work with any care homes I took good care of my grandmother. She was paralyzed for 6 years. And I got a caredemy certificate. From this course, I learn what is the duty of a care worker. Can you help me to do work with a care home? How can I get sponsorship? I believe that a care home job is more than just a job. I love this job very much

You need Very littls qualifications. THEY WILL WORK YOU TO DEATH. You have to work long hours. You need to stand up for yourself or they will bully you. Some of the UK care homes are a DISGRACE, i would not put my dog in one. THE COMPANY ONLY WANT THE MONEY.

Sorry for asking but who takes care of dead body? Does care assistant change bedding everyday?

Dead body is not the carers job. It does happen from time to time as sad it is. The carer changes bedding if they work the morning shift usually. I work mornings, afternoons and evenings and generally the bedding isn't changed in the afternoon/evening unless the bedding is soiled then yes it will need to be changed. Switching back to the first question, I believe that the nurse looks after the dead resident and they call inform the family and decide on a mortuary to call to collect the body. Hope this helped.

But yea, the carer isn't qualified to deal with the dead resident. It would have to be a nurse.

As a care assistant in residential or community, you would deal with a deceased person due to the nature of the job. It is a very sad and can be distressing experience at first. Nothing ever prepares one for it.
