What's it like to be a cargo pilot every day? What's it like to fly a Metroliner at Key Lime Air? By the way, these airplanes are loud. (amzn.to/3GUScb7) I recommend getting a Bose A20 to protect your hearing. How about a budget headset? 👉 (amzn.to/34WvUsg)

I was with LTL freight company, but driving trucks and not flying. And as well as driving, we also had to "work freight", loading and unloading the trailers. And we did get "items" of freight that was out of the ordinary and interesting all the time. And with the air freight I would imagine the freight to be just as varied if not more so. Items sent on air freight are there because of the need for quick transit. This makes me think of items that could be expensive, rare, of great priority, of high necessity, and in many other ways that made them this item of high priority to ship fast at a higher cost.

. This aircraft was not equipped with autopilot, and flying through turbulence, bad weather or other conditions is extremely tiring and exhausting, because you need to have ' hands on ' control all the time. Very easy aircraft to fly in favourable weather conditions though.

I hope you advance quickly onto regular FAR 121 operations with two pilots in a modern aircraft. Flying the Metroliner commercially in Colorado with bad weather and high average elevation with little to no automation as single pilot in IFR conditions pushes the workload up to 11. There is basically zero margin of error, even for experienced pilots.

This aircraft is a known pilot- hater and has little tolerance towards even professional pilots during it's handling and constant hands- on requirement. You are very correct in your summary of thie handling of this aircraft

Very few places that fly Metro's have autopilots. Whether cargo or not. Been at 3 different companies with metros. At the current one we have a couple that still have autopilots. Usually when they break though most companies just say "no more autopilot sorry". Not sure if the Metro's is specifically difficult compared to other turboprops.

Don't forget the part about how your "pressured" to fly into bad weather (because we know those Amazon packages must be delivered) because if you refuse a flight because of a safety concern, you risk loosing your job! Of course they will deny this for fear of FAA. Pilots will tell you the truth though, if they are not in fear of loosing their job!

That's a thing of the past. I flew feeder cargo for a while (Not for this place). I didn't have any concerns about retaliation for delaying or canceling a flight for a legitimate reason. In fact, I worked with a guy who used to bail on flights for ridiculous reasons all the time. No issues. There is already tremendous turnover as folks ditch them for the regionals as soon as they get their time. They need to retain all the pilots they can.

Nice in depth video. I worked at DHL and we called these planes feeders. They would bring cargo from smaller airports to LAX overnight. We had a contract with Ameriflight that had similar/same planes as Key Lime but with no windows. I didn't know pilots touched freight thought the rampers loaded/unloaded...😃

I agree and disagree with different aspects of the video. I AGREE that this is the best stivk you'll ever be in your career... The FOs I get who come from places like Ameriflight are great pilots. @@nado411 I have to at least assume at his relatively young age (compared to my old retired from freight hauling ass) that he's building time. If the money and the experience makes him happy I'm fine with his arrangement. He's obviously being at least provided for reasonably. I retired quite a while back from a small CO that got gobbled up by a bigger corporation. Not unusual . Specialized routes get bought out on a regular basis but that was nearly 20 years back. Things have changed and not for the best. I had two dedicated flights a week and I was well paid. From what I'm hearing now that isn't the case anymore. I was home nightly, I had a great boss, I was well connected, well trained and well paid. Unfortunately I know I was an exception not a rule. I know I was blessed beyond belief, but loyal. This young man works his ass off. I give him props for that. Likely single and few responsibilities. You can only live on the ragged edge so long, burning candles at both ends never works out for people in the end. I hope he stays safe and able to fly a long time. I saw many come and go.

Yeah buddy... Now that's a career path that's hard to pass up. But, I'll hand it to you. Go back to the 70's. Duct Tape 1 thru 7- a fleet of beat up Cherokee 6's flying film, bank checks all at night. Depart around midnight. Make your stops then watch the sun burn your corneas as the sun came up. What's this thing you call an auto what? Mark 12 radios, VOA4 nav heads (when they worked) GPS? What was that? Weather? Well, if you don't want to go, we'll send your last check (all $900 a month on a good month) to you. ADF was the most reliable instrument in the plane (when it worked like nothing else did) Did work with a guy that flew the Metroliner 35 yrs ago. 2 pilot op's. He loved it, but NOT a single pilot IFR workload. He's still alive; I'm still alive ... hope you stay that way too.

Sounds like Air Aurora (callsign Borealis)...am I correct?

Metroliners were not built for single pilot (hence the bleed air switches on the far right and low), but the autopilots have a hard time controlling the massive roll inputs needed against the super sensitive pitch and they aren't MEL-able...so most operators go single, or dual pilot with pax. Love the Metro...but it's a pig, to be sure.

@Exuma Guy I should clarify, "it's my opinion that the Metro should be dual pilot" (no offense to single pilots). I flew with 3 operators in Australia, and none of them had MEL-able A/P's (may be an Ozzy reg, or a restriction from the Operator, or a possible connection to the flight controls...I don't know). There have been over 300 incidents/accidents of Metros (NTSB) and considering there were only approx 600+ built, indicates it wasn't the safest of turboprops. Again, I don't know why the bleed air switches are located below eye height, on the FO side, but it has been implicated in at least one fatal crash (single pilot, after T/O at night, YSSY), that I know of. I can't imagine a worse place to put them. Cool aircraft, but Ed Swearingen wasn't the Michelangelo of design and by the time of production it was Fairchild's baby anyway. My opinon only....

Been there done that, you are superior pilot after the survival! Only few people can do this job. It will pay off most cases! Good job brother!

the key lime air midair collision was the best thing that could ever happen to this channel! that aside, so has that pilot been on leave? or is he working again? he had no idea it was a mid air until he landed and went back right - he thought it was just a single engine failure right? another separate topic: i can't fathom how u guys can fly single pilot ifr in bad weather with no autopilot!! are u saying the aircraft literally has ZERO AUTOPILOT, no heading select, no alt hold, NO AUTOPILOT WHATSOEVER? so you're conducting the ENTIRE flight by HAND on the yoke the ENTIRE flight? all while managing radio, charts, checklist, issues, etc. how is that even possible?? i mean i can't comprehend it. even GA pilots have some form of at least basic alt hold, heading hold, so they can take their hand off the yoke for a second.

Not necessarily so. My friend that is a Capt on MD-83s (for a major airline) slips on his Arkansas cap as soon as the cockpit door is closed. It's a carryover from his military days.
