Hi, i read all the comments and i saw you are an ETL developer, so i assume you can give me advice haha. i want to be a data engineer but i dont know if i should learn python first or SQL?
@andrewmaxwell9399 Жыл бұрын
Hi, currently I'm an ETL Developer but have worked on projects using Python for data extraction from website that provides API Services with subscription based. I think first thing first is the SQL, no matter which companies you worked for, which projects, there'd be always a demands for using SQL either it's SQL Server, Postgresql, Mysql, Oracle, etc. For Python, it depends, in my country, most of the developments(85-90%) are using ETL Tools like IBM Datastage,Pentaho, and SSIS. There are also many more ETL Tools out there. Python is helpful, but learn it both won't hurt. So if i was a fresher and can do time travel thing, first thing I'd learn SQL, not just basics of select * from table, I'd learn it more throughly such as Window Function, CTE, Stored Procedure, View, Subqueries. Then I'd start to learn Python+ETL Tools. Then If I still had the time , I'd probably learn about the Cloud Environment,this is not mandatory but very good to have basic understanding, just to get to know how to use the cloud for supporting your pipelines.

Everything is database right ? Are you a database admin ? On which kind of databases are you working on ? I’d like to become a db admin but I don’t know which path to follow. Mastering SQL is the first step right ? Thanks

I'm an ETL Developer. More involved in Data Integration. Getting data from different sources and optimizing the load to a datawarehouse. Yes, study SQL as it will be used in coding database objects, no need to memorize the syntax, just get familiar with the syntax and important to know what a certain command does. I just google stuff out when I'm stuck. :)

Hi, looking to change career and I'm very interested in going to the same field as yours. If you're to start from scratch, how would you do it, like which ones are you going to focus on and what resources are you going to use without enrolling into a school or uni? Thanks!
@betterdays876 Жыл бұрын
Hi, Sorry for the super late response. There are courses online and focus on SQL, as these will be always used. Also focus on up-skilling on Data integration and Data Reporting.

Can i know what is the daily tasks you do as a database programmer???
@betterdays876 Жыл бұрын
Hi, Sorry for the super late response. My role is focused on Data Integration and data warehousing, so tasks involved are more on Extract Transform and Loading of data to a destination database. Part of it is the architecture of the flow of data from source to target.

I think you can explore Data Analyst and Business Analyst field. But then, it would require knowledge on SQL so that you can pull data from database.

Hello po! Do you have tips po for aspiring database developers? :)
