So glad i found your channel! I'm in the process of fixing my home for a daycare and have so many questions. If its not too personal I'm guessing you're in CA by the number of kids for large family care, 14 max. I'm trying to figure out how many employees I can pay and still make it worthwhile as a retirement venture. I have a great house and yard and love kids. My youngest just left for college and I'm free to reinvent myself and need to make $ to pay for two in college.

Hi congratulations! I’d recommend hiring one full time employee and one part time employee so you always have coverage. As far as how much you’ll be able to put away for retirement that would depend on your monthly expenses. If your house is paid off you’ll be doing well if you still have a mortgage you’ll probably be able to put less away. I’m currently aggressively investing for retirement as well. My advice is to prioritize your retirement investments over college and encourage your children to start out at community college and offer to cover their living expenses. My daughter is mostly debt free using this method and in that time I was able to triple my retirement investments so we’re both taken care of 🎉

@@sunnypatchpreschool thank you for your reply! My daughter is in CC and son on full tuition scholarship and house paid off. The next thing is I see for self employed 401k and sep IRA s is you have to fund employees as well. Is that something you'd recommend? Thank you again for your awesome content!

You would have to check out your state in my state the first 2 years you’re operating under a new EIN you don’t have to after that it’s the same percentage as you put into your own retirement but I think it’s only required for full time employees. You could have part time employees if you wanted to avoid that. Also if you’re paying yourself as an employee which you should be you’d want to max out your ROTH and HSA if it’s available to you first.

Hi there. I’m in upstate NY but I think our requirements for in home daycare and michigans are relatively similar. My daycare will be downstairs, but my kitchen and bathroom for kids will be upstairs. Do you foresee any issues with this from a licensing perspective? My upstairs is child proofed so I’d bring the kids upstairs for lunch and potty time

Thanks! We do not do field trips as that would require additional insurance and a really large vehicle to transport. We do have parents meet up at the cure mill or other places

I’m curious as to how long will you allow the subsidy family to continue without payment seeing it’s been 7 months already. Last year I had 2 foster families that I ran into a similar situation with the state paying and I had to threaten to terminate care and then I finally received pay. Also does Michigan pay your full tuition rate? Here in Ohio they don’t and I loose about $30-40 a week per family which to me isn’t fair because the care and amenities are the same as private pay.

In our program parents pay for the subsidy and I reimburse them once I get paid. (Often grandparents help out and pay the bill then get the reimbursement check ) I also let parents know they have to pay the balance of the tuition fee so everyone still has to pay the same amount. So there’s a parent responsibility as well as what the state pays.

It’s unfortunate that they wouldn’t cover the full tuition rate. It’s so important that kids from difficult home situations have access to quality care.

Yes and we are not allowed to charged the difference per state rules.

I don’t know how facilities in the inner cities even make a profit because I assume a large portion of their families are subsidized. I currently have 6 families. I do like you said because I hate knowing that a child would miss out on a quality program. This is the most families at once that I’ve had. Another benefit of having subsidized families is that I’ve gotten a few grants from the state that I would not of qualified for had I not had children in that program.

Once you have decided a child isn't a good fit for care in your program and you inform the parent will you keep them for the period of time they already paid for or will you end care that day and refund them? Also interested in your childcare parent handbook and what that looks like. I'm currently in the process of writing mine up.

It depends on the circumstances. I hold one week’s tuition to apply toward the last week of care. If I am letting parents know it’s not working out I will provide care whenever possible until they find alternate care up to two weeks. A family could be on a wait list for a week or two in another program but care becomes available sooner than expected I would refund the tuition. In these circumstances we all just want what’s best for the child and the family. If a family is leaving for other reasons they are required to give two weeks notice so I can notify families on my wait list or find another child to fill the spot. That’s terrible that you haven’t been paid. There always seems to be so much paperwork. I find anytime you have 3rd parties involved things are far too complicated. Hope you work that out soon!

Do you use the USDA food program? Why or why not?

I used to be on the food program, I’m not currently but I would consider it in the future. It’s the extra paperwork, at this time I don’t want to deal with it. We do however serve meals that are in keeping with the standard. You can go on and off the food program depending on how you feel about meal tracking and having extra people in your house for random visits.

What's the advantage of the food program? Is there a discount on food? I wouldn't understand extra paperwork and government oversight if there is no $ advantage. ​@@sunnypatchpreschool

Things here in Canada are very different. I'm a Register Early Childhood Educator with the College of ECE's and I run my own private home daycare. I can only have 5 kids legally, if I was licenced then I could take 6. Anyone found with more then those numbers will be charged.

We are licensed I wouldn’t operate a program without licensing here also it’s not legal to do so in our state.
