Chris, you nailed it on the spot. This is exactly how it worked in the late 80’s. Once a month the SMA Europe decided we have required sergeant’s time where training was require for the entire day. This was instituted because we had a lot of folks going to the PX for needed errands, sick call, or other personal/organizational needs to the main post to sham for the day. In addition, We did rotate on our nuclear security detail for a week every month (by platoon) , and had weekly field training each quarter, and our semi annual weapons, required road marches and pt test as required.

When I was at Ft. Hood in the 1990's my unit at the time made us do a urine analysis every 30 days. I hated that.

This is inaccurate. Here’s how it really goes down: 06:20 - wake up hungover and gargle mouthwash really quick. 06:30 - chat with fellow soldiers in formation while first sergeant gives safety brief. 06:40-07:30 - move arms around in air to mimic real exercise. 07:30-09:00 - eat overpriced Burger King breakfast sandwich and then well earned nap 09:00-11:30 am - chit chat with fellow soldiers about the newest call of duty game while pushing a broom around in circles. 11:30 am-13:00 - bag of chips and a 40 oz beer followed by well earned nap. 13:00-17:00 - play Xbox and drink lots of rockstars 17:00-bedtime - spend all your money off post Wash. Rinse. Repeat. 😎🤟

We always got a lunch break but they might extend your day an hour or so . Which really wasn't a big deal because if missing lunch could happen we were always busy and had plenty to do . I was a wheeled vehicle mechanic heavy wheeled vehicles . We did have battalion wrecker once every two months or so that could get you up at 2am to pickup something that broke down. Nor often but it did happen occasionally.

One of the most important attitudes to have in the military is flexibility. You NEVER know what your day is going to look like in the military. There’s always a variable. There’s always some bullshit detail that needs to be done. There’s always a “hey private come here”. There’s always a task that came down from the top brass that is THE MOST IMPORTANT THING THATS EVER HAPPENED IN THE HISTORY OF THE MILITARY. You of course typically know the general outline of your day, but there is a chance that might get completely thrown out of the window. STAY FLEXIBLE. SEMPER GUMBY.
Reserve is pretty much the same except we rarely do pt. Unless you’re pt failure then you will have to do remedial pt. Other than that we do pmcs and administration, sometimes we teach classes and that’s it 😁👍

I've worked with a vet who was never as upset as me about just missing the bus and having to wait a half hour for the next. I would do it to serve my country, but to sell fancy things to places I can't afford to shop, nah.

I’m a pansy ass civilian and wish people would show up when they say they will. As I worked in the energy industry, I always showed up 20 minutes early to be in my coveralls, boots etc, and fill out my daily hazard assessment form and have a few minutes to spare if something odd came up.

I was enlisted in the late 80's. We use to get jerked around a lot by the NCO's who would tell us Friday at 2:0 we had railhead duty or field duty guarding an abandoned TOC all weekend. Does that still happen?

I was a mechanic 12 years active duty, 75% of the time I did NOT get out of work at 1600 (we started pt at 0600) the parts would always come in about 1530, we would end up working until 2000 , 2100 ...even all night sometimes. Lol nah, you'll be working sick call and at a clinic. In the field you'll be in your own area/tent for medical. PMCS on your vehicles probably. And running medical classes once you get a little higher in rank. Then running a platoon of medics once you get to E-6/E-7.

Have you ever considered or are currently considering reenlisting? How would that work given you already have a relatively extensive service record? Could you retain previous rank?

Nope. I have a good job working for the Army as a civilian that pays well and if I for some crazy reason we're to back in the Army instead of doing my current job then I would not be allowed to come back with my old rank. I'd most likely have to go back as an E4.

The Army will let you pick your specific job as long as it's available and you qualify. Other branches don't really let you do that. They place you in a job they need or feel you would be best at.
