Easy why I’m seeing this! My children’s father graduated in 1974. Very emotional day for me then! Just HAD to see how Trump screwed up the commencement, just so he had a photo op!!!!....DEMANDING all cadets had to come back despite Covid so he could make a speech! Very, despicable man! 50 years ago I was at West Point as a Military Police Sergeant, Desk Sergeant, and Patrol Supervisor. Things have changed in terms of layout and facilities. It was during Vietnam and we had funeral duty almost every week. I lost track of how many 2nd Lieutenants we buried. It was also during Kent State and we practiced with riot gear. During my time there Eisenhower died, Patton the movie was released and I saw George C. Scott and Omar Bradley. Coach K was there and Tennis player Arthur Ashe. Bobby Knight was here as coach and I ticketed him for illegal parking behind the cadet mess. He was not a happy camper! Also there when MyLai massacre story broke and ABC news came in by copter to interview Gen. Koster. Too many stories to relate.

That was before women....I think they still may have been doing "Bracing"......I can imagine it was much harder back then.....I read the Thin Gray Line about the class of 66.....back then the upper classmen practiced food deprivation as well as sleep deprivation on the lower classmen which was out of line in my opinion as well as Bracing.....when you read about the shit that took place when guys went through 100 years ago the upper classmen should have been jailed....i get it that it is now kind of easy compared to years past, but at least these kids now can learn in a good environment......

Is west point a bit like Army Foundation College Harrogate over here in the UK? AFC Harrogate is essentially a military college where 16/17 year old junior entries do their phase 1 military training (soldier training) to be British Soldiers as Junior Soldiers (your rank at AFC). If you're joining as an infantry soldier or driver and any other role that's not technical, you do the 44 week long course training and if you're joining as a mechanic, engineer or any other technical role you do the 23 week short course training. After Harrogate you go to do your Phase 2 (MOS Training) at a different establishment. You do swear your oath and officially join the Army in AFC from Day 1. Even though you do military training in AFC, you also do education here at a college level. They'll also help you get your English, Maths and IT if you failed at school. Or if you pass, you can do a higher level education course such as leadership or public services or whatever is on the syllabus. Not only all this, you get an OR-1 pay rate which is just over 16k a year. So you're getting paid to be here. If you're 17 years old and 5 months you go to different for phase 1 as an adult entry soldier depending on which regiment you have chose to join. Adult entry is a lot more hardcore and fast pace as it's all shorter. I'm just wondering as I'm currently in basic training at AFC, I just want to know how it all differs or if West Point is like your equivalent to AFC Harrogate over here. If you read this, thanks and I'll appreciate any response! 😄

You can't be rude about actually attending the academy though. ROTC is a balance between civilian life and military life whereas the academy is living and breathing military. Here is an important note, the retention rate of USMA officers after completing their five years of active duty is ridiculously low. Around 20% in comparison to well over 50% for ROTC for a 4 year scholarship. OCS is even higher, despite having the smallest commision rate. Pushing cadets harder does not mean a result of better officers. Most agree the best way to produce high quality of officers is to have a balanced life which USMA cadets do not have.

@@TheDissmaster10 Nearly 60% of the annual requirements of commissioned officers from all services (except the USCG and merchant marines) come from ROTC. Not the military academies, OCS, AMEDD, or direct source. Any good NCO or officer is not going to disrespect someone based on their commissioning source. Anyone that has served a full term career until retirement in the military knows that a service academy rarely defined their lives.

You have to understand that making rank as an officer is competitive. With promotions, if you don't make the next they'll throw you out. If you don't make major eventually they'll put you out. If you get just one bad evaluation report you can hang your career up. I think if you don't make the next rank, they very well may offer you becoming a sergeant, just as long as you're not a problem.

Go Army (back to back wins), we sing second :) After reading some of the comments below, I thought I'd clarify some of the things I'm hearing in the replies. Mind you, I didn't attend West Point, my son is a graduate, class of 2017 so my insight comes from him. However, I am a retired Army senior noncommissioned officer and I paid attention while my son worked his butt off while going here:). The Long Grey Line: Their site defines the LGL as "The prestigious corps of West Point graduates who represent high achievement and the promise of outstanding, ethical leadership" but typically it has more to do with tradition, like family and the bond that extends from generations of new cadets to old graduates. Plus, the whole academy is built with grey granite type stone. This can get depressing, especially after returning from say Christmas leave and returning to grey skies on top of grey buildings while wearing white over grey uniforms to class -- it can get depressing. Nominations: First, it isn't easy to get to the United States Military Academy (USMA from now on). You need to be nominated by a representative of congress, senate or VP/President. You may also get a nomination based on a parent's service (presidential nomination) or if the parent has service connected disabilities i.e. 100% disabled as deemed by the VA. And if you have a family member who graduated USMA, you got a good chance of getting in. Know this though, each representative only gets two nominations so the competition is fierce. Also, if you're interested in the USMA, there's also a preparatory school adjacent to the academy that helps those students that are close to qualifying but need some assistance. It's not a give in that you'll get in by going to this prep school but it does increase your odds, providing you're doing well while there. I do remember you'll need a 25 and above in all areas of your ACT exam. I don't remember SAT criteria but you get the point. Get ready to contribute to the community by volunteering and getting involved in sports if you're not already. Tuition: this is a "tuition free" college but these kids are obligated to the Army for five years after graduation. Also, I recall I had to front a couple of grand up front though I hear they could have waived that sum of money in lieu of deducting it from my kids stipend. Either way, the Army gets their money. Education Supplies: You all should know that each college student gets a computer, monitor and printer. You share a room with up to three other cadets. You're first year is the hardest and each year gets better until before you know it, you're graduating and having some VIP guest speaker advise you on the journey in front of you. Stipend: While at West Point, as Plebes (the first year or freshmens), they are given a small stipend each month. Plebes get around 250. Each year thereafter will earn you another 100 bucks so by the time you're a firstie (senior), you're receiving roughly around 500 bucks give or take. Don't quote me on the numbers, just know it aint much but it's better than nothing. They like to call it a percentage of your Lieutenant pay. Physical Fitness: Commanders assess soldiers' fitness by conducting Army Physical fitness test usually twice a year. The cadet in the vid speaks to having to participate in early AM PT because he failed to run a 13 min, 2 mile run. That's difficult for most soldiers. Though I didn't see much of that when I was in, we did have programs where if you scored over a 270 or 90 in each of the three events, you could do PT on your own. These are incentive for people to try/motivate themselves to do better. Still, that run is pretty damn fast lol. Army Football: This is a BIG DEAL to the academy and well, you should get used to saying "Go Army, Beat Navy!". This slogan is used when rendering salutes (at times )and is written everywhere on almost anything. On the Supe's (superintendent) roof it reads, you guessed it, GO ARMY, BEAT NAVY! It's all about tradition and respect. I love that aspect of West Point. So these are some of things that stick out as I read some of the posts below. It is my sincerest hope that if you're interested, whether you think you qualify or not, you should apply. This is one hell of an education and if you're watching the above vid, you're probably interested. GO ARMY, BEAT NAVY!!! 14-13 9 Dec 2017 Hooah!!

Yes, most units in the Army is not like this, particularly on the enlisted side of the house. You do PRT in the morning, or afternoon depending on the time of year. You go to work from 0900 to 1700 or when released, and most weekends you are off, unless on mission or on duty (CQ, Staff Duty, Extra duty). For military academies, the different customs are designed to instill discipline and traditional values in the cadets.

I’ve literally done none of this as an enlisted soldier so I wouldn’t go off this if you’re writing a novel

I remember when I've graduated in (Oahu)(National guard youth challenge academy) back in 07'' we never had these fancy looking things we had, anyone who graduated in west point cadets are lucky to live in that environment life.

I was in Louisiana youth challenge program or ycp as we call it down here. It was fun right, even without fancy shit

Hey, cadet, I know this was a while ago, but I just finished my freshman ("fish") year in the Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M and I was wondering what military instruction was like as a plebe and how it compared to training for a fish. At A&M we have designated training times every morning and monday and friday afternoons, and during these times first semester we learn drill, uniform wear, corps policies, and "campusologies" (facts about the school that we recite verbatim in order to instill uniformity in our buddy class within our outfit.) Does West Point have something similar to this? Because from the video it seems like y'all have a muuuuuuuuch more chill everyday living environment than we do, a lot less yelling and stuff like that.

Gig 'Em. c/o 2011 here. Was in B-2 while I was there and had several buddies while I was growing up go to West Point. From what they've told me it was a MUCH more in depth way of life. It was much easier to separate civilian and corps life while at A&M then it was for my friends at West Point. Their days were literally broken down in to 15 minutes segments where they always had somewhere to be or something to do. Even worse as a plebe. I mean I was busy at A&M but nothing like West Point. Oh and there was definitely yelling, just not when there's a camera floating around. haha

Japanese school children must clean there school every day. It instills a sense of pride in their own school and responsibility and no need for janitors. I think that should be done here in the US as well.

Pedantic Pete Maybe that's why their economy was always shite compared to the U.S.' Janitors need jobs. Children should focus on education.

Cleaning duty is part of the education. It teaches kids to be responsible and independent. Western kids are so spoiled and bratty
