I've been thinking about what I want to do in my life. I love astronomy and I would love to go and be an astronomer, and it was really encouraging to hear that her dad studied in Spain. I say that because I also want to possibly study abroad in Spanish speaking countries. But it seems like the kind of job where you don't get to go home and see your family a lot, and that's really important to me... But it does seem like a fun job : )

You do need a fair amount of university level maths. In my experience as student in South Africa, that means at least two years of maths and applied maths.
@tanajoseph73257 жыл бұрын
It all depends on what kind of astronomy you do and where you study or work. If you are from a country that has a large astronomy community, then you can stay in that country and not be far from your family. And astronomers travel a lot for work (conferences, research visits, etc.) and often use those trips to go home for a visit. And of course, there is always the option to take your family with you when you move for a job. In terms of studying and working in a Spanish speaking country, Chile hosts some of the best telescopes in the world and several very good astronomy departments at its universities, so that would be a good option.

I don't want to break anyone's dreams, but EXTREMELY few astronomers actually get to study with telescopes such as these. The vast majority of astronomers study in cities in front of a computer, running simulations and programs, which is also very exciting! I just don't want you guys to think that this is what a typical astronomer do, which is FAR from the truth. But it's still very interesting!

I’ve always loved space since I was young and always dreamed to become an astronaut but one of the requirements to be an astronaut is 1000 hours of pilot-in-command time in jet aircraft. Yeah and I’m not into flying and passing out in mid-air kinda stuff. So I was kinda devastated tbh but soon discovered astronomy/astronomer and I searched for the requirements, turns out it was pretty decent. Though astronomers might just be badly paid scientists I still wanted to be one so bad, imagine discovering an exoplanet and being able to name it. Ahhh absolute dream come true

@tanajoseph73257 жыл бұрын
Hi A.A. Thanks for the suggestion for a new video. In the mean time, here is a quick run down on how to become a quailified astronomer: To become an astronomer you must do maths and physics at school. Then you can do an undergraduate (BSc) degree in either physics, astrophysics, applied maths or even engineering. After that, you would do postgraduate studies in physics or astrophysics, ending in a PhD (doctorate). Then you are a qualified astronomer.

The government of South Africa has been investing in astronomy for many years. We not only have the biggest optical telescope in the southern hemisphere, but also the best radio telescope. As with all large-scale scientific projects, we have support from other countries around the world. As far as Africa is concerned, several other African countries are joining South Africa in building radio telescopes in their own country and working together with us to make an amazing world class instrument that will rival US and European efforts.

@tanajoseph73256 жыл бұрын
Hi! The main subjects required (at high school and university) to become an astronomer are physics and mathematics. Computer programming is also very important (this is often covered in physics and/or applied maths courses at university, though). Good luck to your daughter on her studies!

The undergraduate degree would be a in physics (or astronomy if available). This degree should include mathematics, astronomy courses if they are available, some applied mathematics and statistics if possible. And some computer programming.

@bill ray Do you even know what you just said, bro? They do more than looking for stars. They have multiple different type of astronomers. They don't just "look for starts". Also if you can find new stars, planets, and galaxy from your basic computer then do it. You need that extra education to be an astronomer. It is harder than you think. Being an astronomer is hard and there are different types of it so don't be disrespectful. Planetary astronomers focus on the life cycles of planets and the discovery of new planets near other stars. Stellar astronomers study the life cycles of stars, and stellar phenomena such as black holes, nebulae (from which stars are born), white dwarfs, supernovas, and pulsars. Solar astronomers study the sun's systems and characteristics, such as its atmospheres, magnetic field, and storms. They may also research new methods of studying the sun. Galactic astronomers study the Milky Way galaxy, the galaxy in which we live. Cosmologists study the origin, history, and potential futures of the entire universe. Cosmology is an active field of study with several important theories under development, including string theory, dark matter and energy, and multiverses.
