How much reading is in a day of Sonlight homeschool curriculum? If you have ever asked yourself this question, here is your answer! At least for HBL-K and Science-A. Have you used either of these programs?

Reading aloud is pretty much my favorite part of every day...I know it's not everyone's favorite thing, but it feels like my last opportunity to be "on stage"...voice-acting a story. haha! It's true that at this level, the amount of reading is really not that heavy--seeing an actual day of Sonlight really shows that very well, great idea for a video!

Haha, I have been incorporating more "on-stage" reading because I'm more comfortable reading aloud and it is just more fun!! I agree, reading aloud is my absolute favorite!!

Love the idea of chunking days together and alternating history and science! I was trying to get my mind around how it would look to go back and forth between the subjects.

We are using Sonlight HBL K and Science K. We are learning so much!!! My kids are very engaged, and having their plan just takes so much pressure off of me to find and choose the books myself. We absolutely love it!

I’m into week 3 of Sonlight K H/B/L and feel so much relief. Last year we did an unstructured pre-K with my oldest and it felt like the wild-west. This summer I sucked it up and purchased the H/B/L curriculum and it has added just the right amount of structure, without feel at all rigid.

Yes, exactly ... it has really helped me not have to make all the decisions on resources and activities, which has been a huge relief!

Thank you for this video! This is so helpful! I’m starting this journey with a kinder age and missed all the convention and things where I could see all the books before. Thank you! We thought maybe traditional school would work but it’s not. Haha we are switching now. Never too late. Thank you! So excited! Definitely looking for literature based.

We used level D last year and level G this year and the reading takes us between 40-60 minutes per day. This year I have started to use Audible for some read alouds so we could listen during breakfast.

Thanks for all of you Sonlight videos! They are so helpful. In your experience, would you say you could do HBL K with a third grader?

Yes! I'm doing it with my 1st grader and 2nd grader ... and I think my 2nd grader is getting more out of it!!

Looking into ordering sonlight hbl K for the fall. Are there any activities or hands on things in the history section? I’m looking for something that also has that in addition to reading living books. Thank you!
@sciencemama
@sciencemama 2 жыл бұрын
Sadly there aren’t any extra activities in the history section! Sonlight doesn’t start the Hands on History kits until HBL A!

I know this is an older video, but I have a rising 3rd grader (8 1/2) boy, and 2nd (6 almost 7) grader girl, we have never used a literature based curriculum, although I have read them chapter books off and on for the last 2-3 years. They are not yet real readers themselves. I'm planning to use Logic of English for LA and Math-U-See..... Would you recommend HBL K, A or B? Thanks for your videos!
@sciencemama
@sciencemama 2 жыл бұрын
I currently have my 8 1/2 (3rd) and 7 (2nd) year old kiddos doing HBL B together. Both of them are still working on phonics, but that doesn't matter because the HBL is designed for you to read to them!

Interesting, how long would you say your school takes when including Math/English? When I called Sonlight I asked them how long it would take for this same level and they told me 1-1.5 hours.. but maybe they were talking with Math/English. I was not interested when they said it took so long.
@sciencemama
@sciencemama 2 жыл бұрын
I'm hoping they meant with Math and English .... I would say if I was doing this with just my 6 year old, we would be doing about 1-1.5 hours for everything!

Do you use their language arts? If not, what do you recommend? I know a lot of people love AAR, but we’ve tried their Pre-reading program for my son and we didnt care for it all.

Hi! I'm not currently using Sonlight LA but I'm actually thinking of going back to it next year ... now that my kids are reading better. For phonics I highly recommend Abeka - I wish I would have started there. AAR is good but it just depends on your child, because it goes at a much slower pace.
@steffa648
@steffa648 2 жыл бұрын
Yes Abeka is amazing!!!! I’m so glad I stuck to the phonics with Abeka because I was so tempted to throw in the towel after two weeks, but my son is thriving in reading and is 6.

Thank you for this. It is very helpful to see some details of the lesson format. I'm surprised at how little daily reading it involves. That certainly makes it look more doable, but I think reading only a couple of pages in the history or science book would not cut it with my kids. They'd want to keep going. We'd probably end up with something like a week or two of science or history reading in a day. On the flip side, they have a hard time listening to chapter book read alouds 🤷‍♀️. I might need to find better chapter books. "A Christmas Carol" was scary because Scrooge was mean. "Rabbit Hill" was slow and dull (I agreed with them on that one). I'm picky about the behaviors and morals in books, so it's hard to find appropriate content that is also appealing.
@sciencemama
@sciencemama 2 жыл бұрын
How old are your kids? Boys or girls? I agree about questionable behavior in books ... so far I have really like Sonlights suggestions and I don't feel like I have to pre-read like previous programs I was using!

Hi, so I saw on fb group that some moms say Abeka is more advanced than Sonlight, I’m leaning towards Sonlight coz of the readings but is the disparity between them pretty big or it’s not bad at all? Do you know by any chance? Thank you
@sciencemama
@sciencemama 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, Abeka is more advanced. That is way we are pretty much on grade level for SL and a year behind for Abeka :) Hope that helps!

@@sciencemama thank you so much for your response. I’m so confused at what to use for my son going to K this coming year. We’re using Abeka for k4 and we’re really breezing through them and he kind of doesn’t like it. I want him to enjoy and learn at the same time. I’m combing your videos to figure out where you are with curriculums right now 😅

@sciencemama

Definitely not! Not even a little bit ... but I do think Sonlight does an excellent job at including parent notes on any resources that present information on evolution or the age of the earth and the notes give the parents tips for how to handle this topics :)
