Күн бұрын

Being that I haven't uploaded a video in the past 2 months, I decided to do a little update.
In school, I am currently taking Gross Anatomy, Neuroanatomy, Dental Materials II, Restorative Dentistry II, and Periodontology. Gross Anatomy and Restorative dentistry are two classes which require a lot of time.
Being that I am on break, I would definitely like to get a video released sometime soon. I will try to go on BlogTV within the next few days, here is my account:

This is my hell revisited. Temple Dental class of 2014... only at Temple would they still teach you to pack amalgam in a canine. Ugh. Worst 4 years of my life. RD2 with Boberick was the worst 6 months of my life.

@RobsWorld
@RobsWorld 14 жыл бұрын
Well, when you have work done on your tooth it shouldn't hurt at all. If the dentist is going to be drilling into your tooth for an operative procedure (such as a filling), he will most definitely numb your tooth and other areas around it. But the drill rotates very fast so if you're not numb enough it can hurt.

Yeah, my knuckles are coated with E. coli by the end of the day :-) The rationale is that we do the amalgam first and learn about retention, then move on to composite, which would probably be more esthetic in this case. Yeah, just got home.. see you soon.

@gipsyking007 Yes, I was preparing an amalgam on the distal of a canine :-P You should speak to my brother (a prosthodontist).. he made a similar remark, lol. This was the beginning of our restorative amalgam lab section before we started composite. One of my professors is a firm believer in amalgam and said that you could make it esthetic even on the distal of a canine, and it will last long if done well. Of course, I'd never do that in my office.. but it was nice to practice :-)

Hah, my professor was very old school and said "You're not going to see it on the DL of the tooth and Amalgam has been used for hundreds of years..." So yeah. But I'd probably go with composite for 6-11 anyway hah. Life's been alright, hopefully will put more videos out soon, thanks!

Sometimes I don't leave the wedges in. I've found that if the contacts are tight enough, I can pre-wedge to get the mylar strip or band interproximally and then remove the wedge. If the contact is too loose though, then I will leave it in...just depends :-)

Hey Im planning on becoming a dentist as well and would love to have your input about what major you think is best for dentistry. Im in my senior year and applications are due this week. :p
@RobsWorld
@RobsWorld 9 жыл бұрын
Hey Alan, I'd say Biology/Pre-Health is the major you'd want to go with in college because it will let you take the classes you need (called pre-requisites) to get into dental school. If you didn't major or take some of the classes, e.g. Biology, Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Comparative Anatomy, and others offered at universities, you would have to do that before going to dental school usually.
@ShaughnMc
@ShaughnMc 9 жыл бұрын
Alan, I majored in business management and took one or two science classes every semester until I graduated. While most students major in biology, you can truly major in anything. picked business because most dentists run their own practice. The 8 prerequisites you have to take in the US and Canada are General Chemistry 1&2, General Biology 1&2, Organic Chemistry 1&2, and General Physics 1&2. A few schools also require Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology, and Biochemistry. Take at least the first 8 classes, ask your dentist if you can start coming in once a week to shadow, and find a volunteer gig doing something you love. Study hard, log a few hundred hours shadowing and volunteering, get some good letters of recommendation, then apply via AADSAS! AADSAS is the name of the universal application goes to every dental school in the US and Canada. You can create a free account when the cycle is open (June to January) to have a peek at what you are required to fill out. Get linked up with the Pre-Health Advisors the moment you step on your college campus. Make friends that will build you up and support you along the way. Don't get discouraged, everyone runs into roadblocks along the way. You can do it! Ironically, the dentist that taught me what I needed to know was a Dr. Alan. Best of luck to you, Alan, and all the other pre-dental hopefuls out there!!!
@fannyslapper33
@fannyslapper33 9 жыл бұрын
+Alan Valle There are many successful doctors that have majored in other areas such as Philosophy which is what my Psychiatrist majored in. Being a Bio/Chem major is so popular because the material on the MCAT/DAT covers biology and chemistry very heavily. My advisor told me about a girl who hated Biology and Chemistry so she switched her major to something she liked. She ended up getting into med school because she took out time to study for the MCAT outside of her classes.

Hey Dr. Rob! I don't know if you remember me at all, but we've spoken before, either here or via email, I don't exactly remember. Anyways, I have good news! I finally got accepted to dental school! A few years ago, I've come to you for advice on how to get in, taking additional coursework, retaking the DAT etc. Well after 4 DAT attempts, a Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences, and being forced into another gap year among a slew of other bullshit, I finally got accepted! I wanted to thank you for the advice and helping me get to where I am today. I could not have done it without your guidance.

Hi Rob, I enjoyed your video. My son, who is 8 years old, loves your origami videos and I saw him watching this one, which was somewhat coincidental. I have been diagnosed with Mercury Poisoning, and my doctor says it's highly likely it came from my amalgam fillings, which at one time I had 10 or 11, and I grind my teeth at night for which I wear a splint. Tomorrow I will have the very last one replaced with resin. There are dentists who specialize in the removal of amalgams...

So I'm going to retake orgo 1 and retake orgo 2 and complete its respective lab. And because I withdrew from orgo 2, I have received a W for that course. I really could use all the help and advice I can get. Thanks.

I usually use my knuckle, too, but sometimes if the button is large I might press it with my elbow. Good luck with your choice of career: A lot of hard work, but decent salary. One of my close relatives is a dentist here in Finland. He works four (4) days a week, and he makes USD 200,000 per year (before taxes).

@MutatedGamer It's the Sony TX-1. A great handheld camera, with 720p HD and autofocus. Really nice video and picture capabilities. Have used it for all of my HD videos except my new videos "Transforming Ninja Star" and the Christmas Tree trailer, which I did with my other camera, the Sony alpha 33. The picture and video are great on that one also, just that the autofocus is somewhat loud. But still great cameras in my opinion :-)

@poshiaHey thanks man. Last semester of my first year we worked on full metal crown preparations, In RD III we are working on PFM preps. #30 isn't such a bad tooth for me, but yeah the DB can pose some problems (I tend to tilt the manikin head for that :-P). I find that the maxillary teeth are a bit trickier with the mirror, more so with the mesio-lingual line angles. I'm getting more used to using the mirror so It's been going well. Have a 3 unit provisional (#9-11) practical this Friday :-|

@RobH0629 I found most dentists don't want to "overmedicate" so it will hurt a little pretty much always, unless you ask for more. You won't be able to though, because by that time you can't talk! The best procedure I found, was one dentist said "If it hurts too much, raise your hand." Then you're thinking about "is this crossing the line or not?" but you have recourse in case you feel it's really too much. P.S. You will get more thumbs up from me if there is more screen time for your cat!

Coming from a rich family helps... But no, as far as I see, it's damn near impossible to manage both a part-time job AND dental school! Dental school is similar to med school as far as the general work load. Most students acquire loans, and it also helps to have profitable job experience beforehand (as well as helpful parents ;-) ) to help pay for living expenses and transportation. I'm a pre-dental student and I'll have to go through the same thing... hopefully.
