Luke Sironski-White is a photographer and a student at the University of Chicago, majoring in Anthropology. Want to go to UChicago? Crimson can help.
Luke's interest in Anthropology and the study of other cultures was sparked by his work in photography, and UChicago's unique analytical approach to the creative arts and its world-renowned "Core" curriculum has, in turn, informed Luke's photography. Outside of class, Luke works as a projectionist for the Film Studies Center at the Logan Media Center for the Arts, photographs for the publication "South Side Weekly," and assists a professional photographer working in Chicago's South Side. Follow a day in Luke's life, and learn about the passion and, in Luke's words, the "intellectual hum" that buzzes around all of UChicago's students.

I spend a lot of my time in chicago and on a few occasions I have visited the campus. Even as just a visitor you can feel how wonderful of a place UChicago is. The vibes from the people and the beautiful environment are so surreal. It really feels like an ideal place to grow not only intellectually but also to grow into yourself.

This video is so magical and inspiring. UChicago is one of my top choices for graduate school. I am also an anthropology major like Luke! I love how he said "just be yourself." That is exactly what I am looking for in a school. I do not want to go to a school where I have to become a person I'm not in order to be accepted by them. I am looking for a school that will accept me as a person for who I am. The University of Chicago is one of the only universities I have come across that promotes everyone to be themselves, hence why I am so interested in it. You can tell that most of the other "elite" universities attract a certain type of student, but everyone I have met from UChicago has had such drastically different personalities, and that is another reason I am interested in it. I believe that there are several other people there who are drastically differently from me and will make me think about things I've never thought about before, as I will do for them in return as well. I really hope I go to UChicago.

CONGRATS ON CHICAGO if you got!!!! BUT LET ME GIVE YOU disclaimers before you go. Just based on my experience and my sister too!!! 1) THe CORE SYSTEM: 1/3 of your time at Chicago is gonna be this core. It can be really taxing at times and super difficult to manage your time. Make sure your prepared for that. At times my I was sleeping like 1-2 hours a day. It’s absolute killer so if your doing something like pre-med or something (course heavy) then maybe Chicago might not be the right choice-> Pomona, RICE or even a lower tier school might be better 2) Intellectual bravado: I feel like UChicago always tries to make things more complicated than they already are. The teaching approach is insightful but super taxing and literally makes you go crazy sometimes. 3) Social life: “where the fun comes to die”-> Look social life is definitely there but it is pretty crappy compared to other schools. You just don’t get time to do things besides reading books lmao. The atmosphere is super competitive and even my friends at school regularly ask me for grades. I therefore agree that this quote is totally true.I’ve tried to get help for mental health from the campus counseling people but they just don’t seem to care because they are so used to students being miserable due to course load. 4)UCHICAGO IS THE MOST EXPENSIVE COLLEGE IN US if not the world! I’ll be transferring from Chicago this year. Although I love certain aspects of the school (and I’ll miss my friends) but there I things I just can’t appreciate. Please, please don’t choose a school because of it’s name, recognition, rankings etc. Wish you all the best guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rigor > gpa UChicago prefers you getting B’s in honors/IB/AP courses over straight A’s in regular high school classes. If you were challenging yourself academically during your high school career, you will be okay! There’s much more to an application than a GPA

That's certainly true of what anthropology was in the past. In recent decades, the field has I think over-corrected, out of an understandable guilt, and now is aggressively anti-racist, to the point of caricature.
