Hot-tip for drying portra in the bathroom and fixing the film curl: The film curls because it constricts as it drys out. This curl can be really bad if the air is very dry. So once the film is 90% dry (been hanging for 30 minutes to an hour), I run the shower HOT for about 5 minutes. The steam from the shower kinda re-hydrates the cellulose of the film causing it to uncurl without getting wet again. Its much easier to cut/scan like this.

Keep in mind that for negative and slide scans with Epson V-series scanners the scanner focus point is a few mm above the glass surface. That's why the new negative holders have adjustable feet to have the negatives sitting just a bit above the glass surface. I always got the sharpest scan results this way.

i encountered the similar issue like Willem's, my negatives were a bit bent/curved. And the fil holder does not do a good job at making it flat.Any suggestion to overcome this challenge without having to stick it on the glass surface? Thanks

@@choongching This is a content-free message, but when I was scanning 2-dimensional barcodes with a flatbed scanner (to test C programming) I went to Lowes and bought a 16 gauge iron/steel sheet metal twice as big as a 8-1/2" by 11" sheet of paper and sawed it in half by hand with a hacksaw, stuck them back to back with JB-weld 2 part 6 minute epoxy, then used matte vinyl cutter adhesive vinyl to make one side black and the other side white. It's pretty heavy and keeps a sopping wet inkjet printout flat when placed on top.

I develop 2 rolls of 120 on each reel, they're designed to take 220 rolls so you load the first roll as far as it can go, then put the second roll on the same reel, that way you can develop 4 rolls in that tank

Cool tip for developing 120 film that I personally use to develop 2 rolls in 1 paterson reel. After you roll one of your 120 rolls leave the tape at the end and take your next roll and use the tape to hold it in place and just keep rolling the film normally. Its like developing one roll of 220 film. In a tank like Willems instead of developing 2 rolls you could get 4

I use a sous vide heater to keep the bath at temperature and I like to agitate with the rod instead of moving the whole tank because it's easier to control

I just saw on Analog Insights a history of the company Ferrania and review of their new Black & White iso 80 film that is a recreation of an Italian film used by Italian film makers in the 1950's. The film then and now is named P30. Its lovely, I can't wait to get my hands on some which means I will have to buy the tank and chemicals that I have not used in 15 or more years. I was thinking of buying whatever low iso B & W film Kodak was producing, but this film is simply beautiful. You might want to deviate from Kodak's Portrait film and give this new film a try, because I think we all will really like its attributes.

If you're going for low ISO...there is some 8 ISO film that gives really good black level when doing the Caffenol reversal process, way deeper blacks than the 400 film I am used to...you do need to get a cheap junky camera and destroy the shutter mechanism is such a way that it ends up exposing the film constantly, then use popsicle sticks and hot melt glue to make a shutter...the exposure times can be in the many, possibly even tens of minutes under switched-outlet dungeon room lighting. Under broad daylight it's like 2 seconds. If you then decide to load 400 speed film in that camera, you end up with non-realtime night vision.

Thank you Willem. I've just started up shooting film and home developing again after a nearly 40 year break! I assumed that you were processing B&W film but it was colour? It seemed a lot easier than home developing colour back in the day. I've processed 2 rolls of 35mm Acros II and the negatives look good but I'm waiting on a scanner as the demand has gone through the roof (Plustek 8200i). Using a Canon A1 and I have 28mm f/2.8 for general use, a 35-70mm f/4 and a 135mm breech lock f/3.5. It has freshened up my approach.

Just about every college and university with a photo program do wet processes, dry and a mix (I like to scan my negatives, edit in photoshop, invert, print on transparency film and make contact prints in the darkroom)

However, you can make color photos from black and white film in photoshop (Harris shutter effect) just know, black and white is super forgiving. You have to wanna mess up your film to do that.

Highly recommend investing in a basic sous vide to keep your chemistry temperature consistent. Makes the process very easy and less rushed. I get perfect results even with E6 film. Works great on a steak 🥩 too!

@@patriciannpalka917 If you only plan to do black and white, then you can use coffee, washing soda, and crushed vitamin C pills to develop, which isn't terribly nasty after the machine has been rinsed.

My boyfriend came up with the idea of using a sous-vide for warming up the chemicals as you can use your app and set the temperature of the water to the half decimal! I already have it for cooking, it's not super cheap. definitely cheaper to have a thermometer haha but if developing is something you do often i think it might be super worth it (plus its great for cooking steaks at home)

You can get Silverfast 8 for free if you input the v600 serial number. The negafix feature is much better and you can specify the film stock used. You should try it out.

Great video! Just what i needed to watch right now. Inspired to develope my own colour film and not just my B&W.. Suggestion for scanner focus, use a peace of thin A4 picture frame glass on the scanner then tape your film to that as these scanners can have a correct focusal plane up to 2/3mm above the scanner bed, worth running tests to find your scanners perfect focus.

You can do four rolls of 120 if you use the tape at the end of the roll to attach it to the next. If you are using one shot developer it halves the cost and time. Just remember which side of the film has the emulsion so you dont need to worry about handling it.

Silverfast 8 is also available for free on the Epson website -- just need your serial number and you tell silverfast your operating system on that link (it should work for windows, as well). I've been a big fan of silverfast, and Nick Carver did a fabulous video on how to use silverfast.

Hi Willem Glad you made a video on Negative Lab Pro it is a really nice piece of software. They way you are converting the image in Lightroom with Negative Lab Pro is the right way, if you made the scan with a digital camera. But for flatbed scanners you have to use another method. For accurate colour you should first convert the scanned image with "Tiff Scan Prep" that is a part of Negative Lab Pro. File/Plug-in Extras/Tiff Scan Prep You can google this and find out how to do it, If not then feel free to text me. I will gladly help you. Have a nice day (Plz like this so Willem get to see it)

Hey, great to watch the new video! More things I want to try at home, too. I used to process Ektachrome (Kodak E6 chemistry) in my bathroom, and I was surprised how consistent the results were with just a water bath as you used here. If you develop a lot a sous vide cooker is a good investment. You can set the exact temp you want and throw your bottles of developer and blix in the water bath. I used to have one when I developed and it made it so much easier.

Just a little warning/note with the unicolor kit, the stabilizer contains hexamine which breaks down into formaldehyde and ammonia. The former being rather bad! Make sure to wear gloves when handling it and if you can (bit hard at the moment given the crisis!) have a mask. Or do it by an open window :)

Quick tip my man, Best way to maintain temp is using a Sous Vide machine. You dial in the exact time, leave it in a plastic container for like 30 mins whilst you fuck around doing whatever then come back and the chemicals are exactly the right temp and so is the water, meaning you get no colour shifts! Also for scanning, you can get ANR glass that goes above the film and holds it flat in the holder and keeps it perfectly flat. Plus give "Silverfast" a go for scanning software, leagues above what Epson scan or almost any other program can get.

I just shot a roll of fomapan 100 rated at 400 which I shot in my Kiev 6c with a 90mm 2.8 lens, developed in Rodinal 1 to 25 for 6.5 minutes. I only scan colour negative and colour reversal film because the ice technology on my Epson 600 only works with colour, so the black and white film will be printed in my darkroom using a 1950s Gnome Condenser Enlarger with a 100mm 5.6 Schneider Componon S lens. A great thing to do while we are under Corona virus restrictions.

Hey Willem! I also develop 120 my self but I struggled with the reels you were using because the platform to feed the film into is pretty small and ruined some good rolls. There's another type of reel with a much larger loading platform that you can find on B&H that will make loading film much easier. You should check it out

I have good results with digitising negative film using my Nikon D850. I take pictures of the negatives (RAW) and convert them with Negative Lab pro in Lightroom.

Nice video Willem. I've been looking to get into developing on my own but it seems many kits are out of stock for shipping. I have a Plustek 8100 I use with Vuescan and NLP. Lovely piece of software. Every now and then you get a sky that's a bit too teal and I also struggle with white from time to time but overall compared to other software on the market I really think it's pretty fantastic!
