My Grandpa told me that you can tell everything you need to know about a farmer by how he cares for his land and fences. It was farms like yours that he would point out as examples of well managed and cared for. Make sure y'all follow dad's safety rules explicitly when running elevators and the like. But then I'm sure you do. Great vid for Farmathon Miss Abby... Again! God bless you one and all....

We use that shed as a waiting place for whoever is running the crops into the bin during harvest as well as when we are loading a semi. Since it is on wheels, we are able to move it around on the farm as needed.

Hi from South Africa… do put your cattle on bean and corn fields after harvest?
@ToddFamilyFarm
@ToddFamilyFarm Жыл бұрын
that happens a lot around here, they eat the grain that didn't get harvested but also the grass around the edges, we used to do it a lot more than we do now but we are planning on doing something

hello from Bordeaux france , i have a question, how come you plante in one direction and harvest in a other one , dont you have one " optimale " way of doing things relative to the size and shape of the land ?
@ToddFamilyFarm
@ToddFamilyFarm Жыл бұрын
excellent question, and we will answer that in depth in an upcoming video, but daddy did answer that same question in the comments of another video because someone else asked, and this is what he said: "we do it both ways. we call it cross cutting or going with the row. you never do a full cross cut, always diagonal, and 45 degrees is best. some fields are too awkward shaped or small to diagonal cross cut, so we go with the row. some fields are so rocky we go with the row, going with the row allows much much better visibility down the row for rocks. the problem with going with the row is it dulls one section of the cutting sickle when every plant goes in the same spot, also it causes feeding issues. meaning when all the beans go in at one spot they pile up and don't like to feed evenly. this is a huge problem when the plants are not nice and dry. going with the row is also much harder because you have to concentrate on the rows very carefully. it's tedious and can cause beans to get smashed down. so both ways have advantages and disadvantages but overall diagonal is better if possible"

I noticed that the storage bins or silos are different for corn and beans. Does the type of silo make a difference or is it just a personal preference?
@ToddFamilyFarm
@ToddFamilyFarm Жыл бұрын
the bins themselves are all the same fundamentally, they are made by different companies and the differences are likened to the differences between ford and chevy. the thing that makes us choose what crop to put in them is mostly size and location. some bins can take the moisture out, others can't. so it's a logistics thing more than anything else that determines what crop we put in each bin
