French Guinea Fowl are terrific little tick eaters, taste great, and help keep predators away. At least mine do. Mine were bought as young keets and raised by a broody hen. If you can stand the noise they are a great addition to a homestead. French guinea are meat guinea fowl so they are larger than regular guineas

Corn starch, sugar, witch hazel, quick clot - they all work great to stop bleeding, especially with some direct pressure. Dogs (and cats) ears don't have quite the sensitivity that we do, yet they can still bleed like CRAZY if they get nipped or poked in the wrong little spot... but it's almost always not as bad as it seems (because there can be a LOT of blood sometimes). H2O2 in the little brown bottles works really well at getting blood out of most things and usually doesn't affect the color of whatever you're cleaning - it also disinfects pretty well.

Beau pressure wash the porch or many bugs will come to visit your porch including the tick. For the pigs drinking water get a blue plastic 30 or 55 gallon water barrow install a Aqua Series 1/2 inch Finish water nipple. Place the barrow away from their mud hole then fill it up check it daily just to how much they drink in a day time you will not have to worry about the pigs getting mud in their drinking water anymore. Chewck Justin Rhodes and The Hollar Homestead the both have pigs and the water barrow system

Not to try to tell you how to build a chicken tractor, but it would be easier on your back if you add some wheels on the rear section or all 4 corners so it will slide or roll easier and add a cable wire to one end so you don't have to bend over to pull the tractor. You will be able to stand and pull backwards while looking into the tractor so you don't squash any chickens under the rear wall of the tractor. Just a helpful suggestion.

When you rotate your pigs you might want to consider seeding it about a week before you move them. I don’t really understand why but it apparently helps to regenerate the paddock faster.

Styptic powder, cornstarch or flour will help clot. Dog ears and tails are the hardest to heal.
@sassykat20004 жыл бұрын
And don't need to be cut or cropped AT ALL. Ear flaps have a function. They keep debris out of the ears and tails serve to balance the dog as well. It's seriously sociopathic to put an animal through such pain because you think it looks better! Thankfully not all people are this heinous. In the UK, for instance, the dogs are disqualified from the show ring if they're cropped!

I am 68, but in excellent health. My husband is 56. In 2 years, God willing, he will be retiring from his job (I’m retired now). We are planning to sell our home & do a modified version of a homestead. It definitely won’t be to the extent that you have, don’t have that much energy, but we will have more land than we do now, again have chickens & a larger garden. We might venture to get more animals, but not sure about that. A younger friend told me she thought it wasn’t good for us to do it because of my age. HA! She’s a city girl & thinks that the town she lives in is too small. IMO, it’s too big. It’s all about perception.

@Kendergurl4 жыл бұрын
Depends how much land you have and where you live. 0-land.. container gardens and earthworms. (Did this in an apartment with a small porch and one with a walkway). And increase in size depending on your land space. Rabbits or chickens as first meat animals. Contact other homesteaders and find out what you can trade. Could you grow plants to sell the seeds online?

Window boxes? Any you pick farms nearby? Maybe kitchen herbs in your window? Anything is one step closer even if it feels really small at the time. There are many low light herbs. Or even micro greens. These can be done inside a window and maybe your next purchase can be a grow light so you can expand and work on regrowing your produce. Coffee cans are good planters. Doesn’t have to be fancy. You should have seen my apartment walkway (had to get the ok of my neighbors and offered to share the edibles)
